Abstract

Macrozoobenthos are aquatic organisms that live on the bottom of the water. Macrozoobenthos can be tolerant or sensitive to environmental changes. Organisms that live relatively sedentary and have varying adaptability to environmental conditions. However, there is no information about macrozoobenthos on Setan Island in Mandeh Tourism Area. To know/understand information about the density and distribution patterns of macrozoobenthos on Setan Island, this study was conducted in January 2022. The sampling area is in the intertidal zone of Setan Island. Sampling was conducted at three stations, each station was divided into three transects. Macrozoobenthos sampling was done using a sieve measuring 1mm x 1mm. The movement of macrozoobenthos to the gravel substrate was relatively slow to avoid the waves. Macrozoobenthos samples were then identified. The density of macrozoobenthos on Setan Island ranged from 2.89-3.89 ind/m2. Station 2 has a higher macrozoobenthos density of 3.89 Ind/m2, the calculation of macrozoobenthos on Setan Island obtained data on the distribution pattern of macrozoobenthos in clusters.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the description of the presence of macrozoobenthos which is thought to have been affected by coastal stockpiling which has recently been carried out around the Mandeh Tourism Area. This research was conducted in January - March 2022, the method used in this research is purposive sampling with sampling using the transect method. The results of this study indicate that the water quality of Nagari Mandeh is sufficient to support the life of macrozoobenthos, the macrozoobenthos found consist of 10 families, namely Arciidae, Cardiidae, Cerithiidae, Fasciolariidae, Neritidae, Potamididae, Psammobiidae, Tellinidae, Turbinidae, and Strombidae. The type of sediment in the waters of Nagari Mandeh consists of gravel sand, colloid, sandy silt, silty sand, and sandy gravel. The content of total organic matter (BOT) from sediments in the waters of Nagari Mandeh was found to be in the range of 8.08% - 15.25% (medium). Coastal reclamation activities do not have an impact on the presence and diversity of macrozoobenthos but have an impact on the types of individuals living around the reclamation area.

Abstract

This research examines the influence of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on sea surface temperature (SST) and rainfall variability in the coastal waters of West Sumatra over the period 2014–2024. The analysis draws on the Dipole Mode Index (DMI), Niño 3.4 index, SST, and rainfall data, processed using MathWorks and Excel. Regression analysis between field and satellite-derived SST data showed a strong correlation (R² = 0.936), confirming the reliability of satellite data for this study. Findings reveal that positive IOD and El Niño events are generally associated with cooler SSTs and reduced rainfall. In contrast, negative IOD and La Niña phases correspond to warmer SSTs and increased rainfall. The IOD appears to exert a more pronounced influence on SST variability than ENSO. Notably, the combined occurrence of a positive IOD and El Niño amplifies the decline in SST and rainfall. At the same time, the combination of a negative IOD and La Niña enhances increases in these variables. These results highlight the significant role of large-scale climate mode in shaping regional oceanographic and atmospheric conditions in the West Sumatra region.
