Abstract

Polyculture farming is an agricultural practice of growing several types of crops on the same land. The sustainability of polyculture farming is influenced by the presence of insects, both ecologically beneficial and detrimental. In agricultural ecology, insects have an important role as pollinators, predators, and pests that significantly affect the health of agricultural crops, including in polyculture farms. As an effort for sustainable polyculture management, especially in pest control, an exploratory study with mixed methods was conducted to determine the diversity, distribution, and categories of insects based on their ecological roles. This study was conducted in an agricultural area with a polyculture system in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. A total of 12 insect species were identified from polyculture farms belonging to the orders Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, and Hymenoptera. The diversity of insects found in polyculture farming in this study was categorized into low diversity with a Shannon-Wiener index (H') of 2.186. Hemiptera is known to be the most abundant with 7 species identified. Based on the number of individuals, Componotus japonicus is the most abundant species with 9 individuals. The structure of the insect community based on their ecological role in polyculture farming consisted of 58.33% insect pests, 33.33% predatory insects, and 8.33% pollinating insects.

Abstract

Environmental changes caused by oil palm plantation activities can affect the diversity of nocturnal insects that play important roles in the ecosystem as pollinators, decomposers, predators, and food sources for other insects as well as bioindicators. This study aimed to determine the levels of diversity, evenness, and dominance of nocturnal insects at two stations with different oil palm planting ages in Seruyan Regency. This study used a descriptive quantitative approach with an exploratory survey method. Nocturnal insects were collected from replanting and non-replanting oil palm areas using light traps equipped with UV lamps. The insects were identified to the species level, and data were analyzed using the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′), Pielou’s evenness index (E), and Simpson’s dominance index (C) with the PAST software. The results showed that from a total of 454 individuals, 15 species of nocturnal insects were successfully identified, originating from 6 orders, namely, Coleoptera (Laccophilus gentilis, Protaetia acuminata, Pangaeus bilineatus, Adoretus versutus, Denticollis linearis, Eumorphus bulbosus, Sirthenea flavipes, Cicindela gallica), Hymenoptera (Vespa affinis, Tetraponera rufonigra), Hemiptera (Pangaeus bilineatus), Odonata (Agriocnemis pygmaea), Lepidoptera (Hypochrosis subrufa, Chytolita morbidalis), and Orthoptera (Gryllus assimilis). The most dominant species was Pangaeus bilineatus with 143 individuals, while the species with the lowest number of individuals was Cicindela gallica with 3 individuals. The Shannon‒Wiener diversity index (H') value of 1.558 (Station I) and 2.129 (Station II) indicates moderate diversity, the Pielou evenness index (E) value of 0.59 (Station I) and 0.65 (Station II) indicates a fairly even distribution, and the Simpson dominance index (C) value of 0.72 (Station I) and 0.85 (Station II) indicates no extreme species dominance. The study revealed moderate nocturnal insect diversity with balanced species distribution, indicating a stable oil palm ecosystem and supporting their role as bioindicators of ecological health.

Abstract

21st century learning prepares a generation that welcomes information and communication technology (ICT) advances in social life and triggers technological developments so that it can open up great potential for changes in the way of learning and obtaining information. Such learning requires specially designed teaching materials to support the process in order to create maximum learning outcomes. This study aims to develop teaching materials to improve students' Science Process Skills (SPS) on mammalian class material. This research uses the R&D method with the ADDIE research model. Data collection techniques used interviews, validation, response questionnaires, SPS observations, and tests. Data from validation and response questionnaires were analyzed using the eligibility criteria formula and respondent criteria. The data of SPS improvement was analyzed by N-Gain test. The results showed that this study produced teaching material consisting of teaching materials, lesson plan, student worksheet, and practicum guides in digital form that were suiTable for use. This is based on the acquisition of material, media and learning expert assessments, and linguists of 80%, 80%, and 91% as well as student responses with an average score of 4.3. In addition, the increase in SPS in the control and experimental classes with an average score of 0.45 and 0.62 is included in the medium criteria and observation of SPS from 6 indicators gets a high category in the experimental class while the control class only gets 1. Based on these results, the PBL-based digital teaching material is feasible, effective, and can improve student SPS.
