Abstract

The murder of women motivated by hatred of their gender, known as femicide, is a crucial issue that frequently occurs in society. The mass media play an important role in shaping the public’s perceptions regarding femicide and the institutions that deal with it through the way they report the news related to both matters. This research aims to analyze the news discourse on femicide and the media's efforts to frame the image of institutions that deal with femicide cases in the online media Kompas.com and Kompas.id. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method and a corpus-based discourse analysis. Data were obtained from 36 news articles related to femicide in Kompas.com and Kompas.id. The femicide news corpus data will be entered into the Antconc software to analyze the word lists, concordance, n-grams, and colocations. The data collection process includes selecting articles, documenting news articles by copying the texts into the Notepad application, saving news texts in *txt. format, and inputting corpus data into the Antconc application. The data analysis process of this research starts from data reduction, data presentation, data triangulation, to drawing conclusions. The results showed that Kompas online media tend to use word choices that are directed at educating about femicide. Kompas online media tends to discuss femicide to raise awareness about femicide among the public. In describing the image of the National Commission on Violence Against Women, the online media Kompas uses positive word choices. This indicates that the public must trust Komnas Perempuan in handling femicide cases. Meanwhile, in describing the police institution's image, the online media Kompas presents this objectively, accurately, and based on the facts in the field. Some of the word choices used by Kompas online media also reveal the expectations of the public and Komnas Perempuan for the police institutions to be more responsive to femicide cases.

Abstract

Background: The Russia-Ukraine conflict has generated an extensive humanitarian crisis in which media representations play a crucial role in shaping global perceptions of civilian suffering. While previous studies have shown that Western media tend to foreground Ukrainian victimhood and marginalize Russian civilian experiences, the representational practices of non-Western news organizations such as Al Jazeera remain underexplored. Aims: This study aims to examine how Al Jazeera represents Ukrainian and Russian civilians in its coverage of the Russia-Ukraine war and to identify ideological positioning reflected through linguistic patterns in the reporting. Method: The study employs a corpus-assisted discourse analysis (CADS) approach. A corpus of 20 Al Jazeera news articles published between 2022 and 2025 was analyzed using keyword frequency and collocation analysis, combined with qualitative interpretation based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional model and the concepts of civilian victimhood and empathy framing. Results: The analysis reveals a marked asymmetry in representation. Ukrainian civilians are predominantly associated with harm-related lexis and collocational patterns that emphasize vulnerability, humanitarian response, and demographic specificity. In contrast, Russian civilians appear far less frequently and are mainly linked to administrative or material damage descriptors, resulting in reduced emotional salience and narrative visibility. Implications: These findings provide empirical evidence that Al Jazeera constructs a hierarchy of civilian suffering that aligns with broader geopolitical narratives. The study contributes to corpus-based media discourse analysis by demonstrating how linguistic patterns reveal ideological positioning in conflict reporting and by highlighting the need for more balanced journalistic portrayals to support critical media literacy.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the representation of the word “love” and gender constructs in the lyrics of Dewa 19 and Raisa songs using the Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS) approach. This study is a mixed, qualitative-descriptive study supported by quantitative corpus analysis. A total of 30 song lyrics containing the word “love” were analyzed using the AntConc tool through three main stages, namely word frequency analysis, collocation, and concordance to identify lexical patterns and discourse orientation that emerged. The results of the analysis show that Dewa 19's lyrics tend to frame love through language that affirms emotional dominance and masculine roles that direct relationships. In contrast, Raisa's lyrics present love as an affective experience that is nurtured through reflection and emotional closeness, thus forming a more egalitarian representation. These findings confirm that popular music plays a role as a space for the formation of social meanings related to gender relations and roles, while also encouraging the need for more empowering representations in Indonesian cultural discourse.
