Abstract

The coconut industry in North Sulawesi has not maximized coconut husk in its business. Most only use the flesh as copra, crude oil (CCO), and cooking oil. From several research results, it turns out that the portion of coconut husk utilization is still very limited in management, and even thrown away. This study aims to analyze the technological and economic feasibility (techno-economy) of the development of the coconut husk industrial system as an effort to provide stakeholder considerations in increasing the value and income of coconut farmers in North Sulawesi. This research was conducted for three months with survey locations in 2 (two) coconut producing areas in North Sulawesi Province, namely South Minahasa Regency and Bitung City. The research method was carried out by conducting surveys and interviews with coconut farmers, entrepreneurs, local government agencies and with experts, then calculating and studying several parameters for measuring the economic value of alternative technologies and equipment used. The results showed that from the measurement of the NPV (Net Present Value), net B/C ratio, IRR (Internal Rate of Return) and PP (Payback Period) it is known that several alternative systems for the development of the coconut husk industry with fiber, cocopeat and rope products are feasible to be developed in South Minahasa Regency and Bitung City. Several things that are very important in the feasibility of developing this agro-industrial system are equipment technology (process), prices of processed products (output) and a continuous market/off taker. The investment value of processing equipment technology is relatively high, so to increase the enthusiasm of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) it really needs government intervention in equipment technology assistance and market certainty.

Abstract

The North Sulawesi Province, widely recognized as the Coconut Waving Province owing to its substantial coconut tree population, primarily depends on copra production. This research presents a novel methodology for determining copra maturity levels by utilizing a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) on digital photographs, classifying them into three distinct stages: raw, half-ripe, and ripe. By employing a rigorous 10-fold cross-validation technique, our models demonstrated remarkable performance. Notably, even the model with the lowest performance achieved a commendable accuracy of 87.78% during the training and validation phases. The model that exhibited the highest level of performance achieved a perfect accuracy rate of 100%. Moreover, when subjected to real-world testing situations using novel data, the model with the lowest performance exhibited a noteworthy accuracy of 83.34%. In contrast, the highest-performing model achieved a flawless accuracy of 100%. Based on the findings above, an online system has been built that leverages the most optimal model, facilitating the assessment of copra maturity in real-time. The prospects encompass the integration of this methodology into copra sorting machinery, thereby yielding advantages for both agricultural producers and industrial sectors. This research enhances copra quality control processes and promotes sustainability in the copra industry. Further research could explore refining the CNN model to accommodate a broader range of copra variations and investigating automation possibilities in copra production processes. These endeavors would advance the efficacy and applicability of copra maturity classification methods, fostering continued innovation in the industry.

Abstract

Abstract

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in traditional food processing often face challenges such as limited marketing channels that rely mostly on word-of-mouth with restricted reach, unstructured financial management, and monotonous business activities. This Community Partnership Program (PKM) was conducted in Sario Kotabaru Village, Sario District, Manado City, targeting two SMEs that produce and sell traditional North Sulawesi foods, specifically "tinutuan" porridge combined with vegetables and pumpkin, and traditional fried snacks such as "nike" fritters and corn fritters, which are highly nutritious. The goal of this PKM activity was to provide training and motivation to the partners in digital marketing, sanitation, and financial management, enabling them to expand their business operations and increase profitability. The training included sessions and assistance on the importance of food sanitation, digital product marketing strategies, and financial management. The implementation method consisted of three stages: survey, proposal preparation, and submission; followed by coordination, socialization, and training in the second stage; and finally, evaluation and reporting. The PKM materials covered branding, marketing strategies, and food sanitation, including the use of social media for digital marketing and internet-based financial management software. The results showed that the targeted SMEs gained an understanding and hands-on experience with digital marketing using mobile phones, received support for digital content creation, and applied improved sanitation practices, contributing to a positive brand image. Evaluation results through questionnaires show that there is a change in mindset, skills proven by questionnaire responses after training with high levels of understanding

Abstract

Many coconut husks in coconut-producing área have not been maximally utilized, especially on a small scale for farmers. It happened due to the difficulty of obtaining simple small-scale coconut decomposing machines, and the region must import it from other regions. As a result, the utilization of coconut fiber in fiber and cocopeat is still minimal. Plus, when bringing in from outside, the logistics cost of the coconut husk decomposing machine is still high. This research aims to conduct a techno-economic analysis of a small-scale coconut husk decomposer from the machine designed and made. The research method was using the experimental method. The results showed that the equipment can produce cocofiber and cocopeat with 600 kg of husk per day for 6 hours of use. The results of economic calculations based on the IRR value, the net B/C ratio, and the payback period show that this machine is feasible to be developed on a small scale for Farmer groups. Technologically, this machine is simple and relatively easy to operate. Further research hopes this machine will prove its durability over long, heavy work periods.
