Abstract

Abstract

Hydroponics is a method of cultivating plants without using soil, but rather using a growing medium and nutrient solution. One commonly used hydroponic system is the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), in which a nutrient solution is flowed in a thin, continuous stream along a sloping gutter. This study aimed to examine the effect of varying flow rate and gutter slope on the growth and yield of kale (Brassica oleraceae L.) in an NFT hydroponic system in a greenhouse. The study used two levels of gutter slope (5.24% and 8.75%) and three levels of flow rate (0.5 L/minute, 1.5 L/minute, and 2.5 L/minute) with a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors and three replications. Observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, fresh weight, pH, and nutrient solution concentration (ppm). The results showed that the 8.75% slope treatment with a 2.5 L/minute flow rate produced the best growth, with an average plant height of 69.89 cm and a fresh weight of 86 g. Although the difference in fresh weight was not statistically significant, the treatment combination provided optimal vegetative growth. The nutrient solution pH ranged from 5.3–6.3 and ppm between 1060–1240, which is still suitable for leafy plant growth. Therefore, a combination of an 8.75% slope and a flow rate of 2.5 L/min is recommended as the optimal NFT system design for kale..

Abstract

Agriculture is a strategic sector that plays a crucial role in ensuring national food security, particularly in rural areas where the majority of the population depends on farming activities for their livelihood. One of the key factors determining the success of farming, especially rice cultivation, is the availability of sufficient, equitable, and timely irrigation water throughout the growing season. In this regard, irrigation systems serve as vital infrastructure supporting agricultural sustainability. This study aims to calculate the efficiency of water distribution based on channel capacity and the ratio of upstream-downstream water discharge, as well as to calculate the value of water loss due to technical and non-technical factors. The results indicate that the effective efficiency of the irrigation channels is 66% for Channel 1 and 74% for Channel 2. Overall, these efficiency levels are still considered relatively low. Water losses occurred in both channels, totaling 0.02678 m³/s for Channel 1 and 0.01423 m³/s for Channel 2. These losses were attributed to seepage, percolation, evaporation, and direct water withdrawal by farmers at several points, which was exacerbated by the absence of an active water management institution for the irrigation channels.

Abstract

Postharvest damage to potatoes can occur due to plant physiological disorders, such as evaporation (transpiration), respiration (respiration), tubers sprouting, and tubers becoming too ripe. This research aims to design, manufacture, and test an evaporative cooling device using a direct spray method from a fan into a room or box by conducting technical tests about temperature, humidity (RH), signs of potato damage, weight loss, and water content. The test was carried out using an evaporative cooling device (evaporative cooler) for 30 days.    This research tested the effectiveness of the evaporative cooling system compared to room outside storage on potato quality for 30 days observationally. The results show that evaporative cooling equipment can prolong the shelf life of fresh potatoes in tropical areas according to physical parameters such as signs of damage to potatoes during storage, water content, and percentage of weight loss. For future development, increasing the fan and cooling pad to medium size is necessary for more effective equipment. An evaporative cooler is a cost-efficient and sustainable method for preserving agricultural produce in rural areas far from urban centers.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the fermentation duration and analyze the physical properties of fermented cocoa beans using an experimental method, followed by descriptive analysis and presentation in tables. The results showed that fermentation of Sulawesi 1 and Sulawesi 2 clones for 46 days caused shrinkage in dimensions (length, width, thickness) due to water loss and internal structural changes. In Sulawesi 1, bean length decreased from 21.62 mm (day 4) to 21.07 mm (day 6), width from 12.27 mm to 11.29 mm, and thickness from 8.92 mm to 8.37 mm. Sulawesi 2 showed a similar trend with smaller changes. Geometric diameter (DG) tended to decline on days 56, while roundness remained relatively stable (0.310.32). Bulk density varied slightly, showing both increases and decreases depending on bean structure. Bean weight increased with fermentation time, both in Sulawesi 1 (156.16 g → 158.43 g) and Sulawesi 2 (161.25 g → 166.89 g). Angle of repose and angle of friction increased on days 5–6, indicating higher cohesion and surface roughness. Moisture content decreased significantly by day 6 (Sulawesi 1: 7.28% → 6.29%; Sulawesi 2: 7.27% → 6.20%), supporting drying and storage quality. Overall, six days of fermentation was more effective in reducing moisture, stabilizing density, increasing weight and cohesion, and improving bean quality. It is therefore recommended as the optimal duration to produce cocoa beans with stable physical properties suitable for post-fermentation processing.
