Abstract

IKIP Saraswati is a multicultural campus where people come from various regions and ethnicities and is known as a campus whose advantages include being professional, character and competitive, as well as a campus strategically located in Tabanan. This situation provides excellent opportunities for students to communicate with people from different cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. Generally, they speak Balinese, the local language spoken throughout Bali. Meanwhile, because of involvement with those who speak a different language, Bahasa Indonesia is increasingly used. Related to this situation, this research investigated the language choice among students at IKIP Saraswati. This study also examined their language attitudes towards Bahasa Indonesia, daily language, and regional languages in achieving goals. The sociolinguistic questionnaires were administered to 58 sample respondents who were IKIP Saraswati students. The study results showed that students have an appreciative attitude towards the daily language of Bahasa Indonesia, English, and regional languages. An investigation into the choice of language shows that students prefer to communicate using Bahasa Indonesia. The dominance of Bahasa Indonesia shifts the use of regional languages.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the conjunction of lan ‘and’ Balinese syntactic construction. Specifically, the connector of “and” was analyzed on its syntactic and semantic roles. The results show that the syntactical conjunction of “and” belongs to the coordinative connector, its relationship closely to the conjuncts or the constituents being connected; hence it cannot stand alone. This conjunction links two or more conjuncts such as words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. Its position is generally in front of the last conjunct that is being connected. “And” can correspond to several conjunctive adverbs in linking conjuncts. Semantically, the conjunction of “and” has semantic roles of the combination consisting of combination roles of sequence, collective, distributive, emphatic, terminative, and continuative. The conjuncts connected by “and” have semantic roles, such as the combination of pure, sequential, contrastive, evaluative, amplificative, pharasfrative, parallel, consequential, cause-effect, and leniency-result.

Abstract

The elevation of the Bahasa Indonesia as the national language in public spaces faces serious challenges, particularly in international tourism areas such as Bali. This study aims to identify and analyze the various challenges hindering the optimal use of Bahasa Indonesia in Bali’s tourism sphere. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using data collected through field observation, interviews with tourism stakeholders, and documentation of language use in public media. The findings reveal a dominant use of foreign languages in signage, restaurant menus, and tourism promotions, illustrating the diminishing presence of Bahasa Indonesia in public domains. Economic factors, global market demands, limited linguistic supervision, and low awareness among tourism actors regarding language regulations are key contributing issues. Nevertheless, strategic opportunities exist through local government policy, enhanced roles of the Language Agency, and community empowerment to reintegrate Bahasa Indonesia into the tourism ecosystem. The study recommends inclusive language education, regular language audits, and cross-sector collaboration to reinforce national identity through language amid globalizing forces.

Indonesian language is undergoing significant changes in the digital era, facing complex challenges and opportunities. Globalisation and technological developments threaten the dominance of the Indonesian language with the increasing use of foreign languages, especially English, on various digital platforms. However, innovations in linguistic technology offer potential solutions to maintain and develop the Indonesian language in the digital world. Technologies such as natural language processing (NLP), automatic translation, and speech recognition play an important role in ensuring the accessibility and relevance of the Indonesian language. Concerted efforts from the government, academia and the tech industry are needed to address these challenges and promote wider and more effective use of Indonesian in the digital age.
