Abstract

The glass house experiment involving compost tea and harvest age was conducted to investigate the effect of giving compost tea (cricket and rabbit feces) and harvesting age on productivity, nutrient content, and in vitro digestibility value of Cichorium intybus. Compost tea (CT) is an aqueous extract from compost that can correct nutrient deficiencies during crop production and protect cultivation. The research treatment consisted of two factors, namely: the age of harvest and the dose of compost tea. The administration of compost tea consisted of three kinds of doses as follows: no compost tea (P0), 200 mL of compost tea (P1), and 400 mL of compost tea (P2). The experimental plants were harvested at different age, consisting of 25, 35 and 45 days after planting (DAP). The experimental design was Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 6 treatments and 9 replications. The data were statictically analyzed using analisys of variance, and differences among value of each treatment were tested with the Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results indicated that compost tea dose and harvesting period treatment affected (P<0.05) leaf length, fresh leaf weight, crude protein content, dry matter digestibility (DMD), and organic matter digestibility (OMD). Meanwhile, it showed not significant effect (P>0.05) on the leaf width and root length. The results suggest that the fertilization treatment of 200 mL of compost tea and 25 DAP could increase productivity (leaf length and fresh leaf weight) of chicory, nutrient content (crude protein) of chicory, and in vitro digestibility (DMD and OMD).

Abstract

The study aimed to determine the effect of the type and dose level of foliar fertilizers on the nutrient content and in vitro digestibility of Clitoria ternatea. The research was conducted at Faculty of Animal Science, Gadjah Mada University. The materials used were butterfly pea seeds, rabbit liquid organic and Gandasil®D fertilizer, rumen fluid. The study analysed by Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with factorial 2x4. The first factor was the type of foliar fertilizer (rabbit liquid organic and Gandasil®D fertilizer). The second factor was the level of fertilizer dosage (0, 1.5, 3 and 4.5 g/l/plot). Parameters observed were DM, OM, Ash, CP, CF, Crude Fat, in vitro dry matter and organic matter digestibility (IVDMD/IVOMD). Data were analyzed by variance analysis at 5%, continued with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results showed that the types of foliar fertilizers didn’t significantly affect the nutrient content (P>0.05), but had a significant effect on IVDMD and IVOMD (P<0.05). The dose level had a significant effect on CP, CF, IVDMD, IVOMD (P<0,05), but not significant effect on DM, OM, and crude fat (P>0.05). There was an interaction between type and dose level of foliar fertilizer on IVDMD and IVOMD (P<0.05). The conclusion is the type of foliar fertilizer doesn’t affect the nutrient content while the level of fertilizer dosage has a significant effect. There is a combination of foliar fertilizers and dose levels on IVDMD and IVOMD. The combination of Gandasil®D fertilizer with dose level of 4,5 g/l/plot got the best IVDMD and IVOMD.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the characteristic morphology and biomass production of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) cultivar Gama Umami under teak tree (Tectona grandis) shade in teak tree forest area of Blora, Central Java. The grass was planted using stem cuttings and maintained for four months using the randomized block design (RBD) method with six repetitions in each treatment. This study consisted of two treatments, namely shade under teak tree stands and non-shade or open area as a control. Maintenance was carried out for 14 weeks with the addition of fertilizers, such as NPK (nitrogen, phosphor, and potassium) and urea. Parameters measured included plant height, leaf length, leaf width, first collar length, number of tiller, and stem diameter. After 14 weeks the plants were harvested, and biomass production data were obtained. The results showed that there were no differences in leaf length, leaf width, first collar length, number shoots, and stem diameter between under the shade and non-shade of teak trees. However, the plant height and biomass production of Napier grass cultivated in non-shade teak trees were higher than under the shade of teak trees. The finding showed that Napier grass cultivar Gama Umami could be cultivated under the shade of teak tree forest and introduce for silvopasture system in teak trees forest area.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to assess the daily ingestion of Klanceng Honey (KH) on fasting blood glucose (FBG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and pancreatic histopathology. Thirty rats were involved and divided into six groups: G1 = untreated normal rats, G2 = untreated diabetic rats (DR), G3 = DR treated with 0.9 mg/kg BW glibenclamide, G4, G5, and G6 = DR treated with 1, 2, and 3 g/kg BW KH, respectively for 28 days. The FBG level of G1 was found lower than that of diabetic rat groups (G2–G6) (p<0.01). The TC level of G1 group on 14th and 28th days was lower than that of G2–G6 groups (p<0.01). The TG levels in all rat groups showed no significant difference at 0–28 days. On 14th day, the LDL level of diabetic groups were higher than the one in G1 group (p<0.01). Meanwhile, on 14th and 28th, the HDL levels of G3–G6 groups, were higher than the one in G1 group (p<0.01). The pancreatic histopathology of all rat groups showed no abnormalities of the Langerhans islets. The daily ingestion of KH prevented FBG, TC, TG, and LDL levels from rising, increased the HDL levels, and protected the pancreatic glands against damage. T. laeviceps honey can potentially be used as a functional food for therapy of DM patients.
