Abstract

This study aims to assess the daily ingestion of Klanceng Honey (KH) on fasting blood glucose (FBG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and pancreatic histopathology. Thirty rats were involved and divided into six groups: G1 = untreated normal rats, G2 = untreated diabetic rats (DR), G3 = DR treated with 0.9 mg/kg BW glibenclamide, G4, G5, and G6 = DR treated with 1, 2, and 3 g/kg BW KH, respectively for 28 days. The FBG level of G1 was found lower than that of diabetic rat groups (G2–G6) (p<0.01). The TC level of G1 group on 14th and 28th days was lower than that of G2–G6 groups (p<0.01). The TG levels in all rat groups showed no significant difference at 0–28 days. On 14th day, the LDL level of diabetic groups were higher than the one in G1 group (p<0.01). Meanwhile, on 14th and 28th, the HDL levels of G3–G6 groups, were higher than the one in G1 group (p<0.01). The pancreatic histopathology of all rat groups showed no abnormalities of the Langerhans islets. The daily ingestion of KH prevented FBG, TC, TG, and LDL levels from rising, increased the HDL levels, and protected the pancreatic glands against damage. T. laeviceps honey can potentially be used as a functional food for therapy of DM patients.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the characteristic morphology and biomass production of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) cultivar Gama Umami under teak tree (Tectona grandis) shade in teak tree forest area of Blora, Central Java. The grass was planted using stem cuttings and maintained for four months using the randomized block design (RBD) method with six repetitions in each treatment. This study consisted of two treatments, namely shade under teak tree stands and non-shade or open area as a control. Maintenance was carried out for 14 weeks with the addition of fertilizers, such as NPK (nitrogen, phosphor, and potassium) and urea. Parameters measured included plant height, leaf length, leaf width, first collar length, number of tiller, and stem diameter. After 14 weeks the plants were harvested, and biomass production data were obtained. The results showed that there were no differences in leaf length, leaf width, first collar length, number shoots, and stem diameter between under the shade and non-shade of teak trees. However, the plant height and biomass production of Napier grass cultivated in non-shade teak trees were higher than under the shade of teak trees. The finding showed that Napier grass cultivar Gama Umami could be cultivated under the shade of teak tree forest and introduce for silvopasture system in teak trees forest area.

Abstract

Nickel mining activities degrade soil quality, necessitating improvement. Post-mining reclamation requires strategic efforts with soil amendments and adaptive plants. Superior grass not only serves as a forage source but also improves soil quality and supports ecosystem stability on degraded land. This study aims to evaluate the effect of biochar and organic fertilizer (OF) (soil amendment agent, SAA) on the productivity and forage quality of the third harvest of four elephant grass cultivars on nickel post-mining land. The study used a factorial design consisting of: Control [-] , Control [+], SAA1 = 5 tons/ha biochar + 20 tons/ha OF, and SAA2 = 10 tons/ha biochar + 20 tons/ha OF. Four elephant grass cultivars were utilized, namely: P. purpureum, P. purpureum cv. GU; P. purpureum cv. Mott, and P. purpureum cv. Thailand. The results showed that SAA2 treatment significantly increased dry matter (DM) production and forage digestibility compared to other treatments. P. purpureum cv. The GU produces the highest DM yield (8,885.07 kg/ha) with good nutritional quality and the highest digestibility—the combination of SAA2 × P. purpureum cv. The GU provides optimum DM productivity (12,094.80 kg/ha) and is recommended as a strategic alternative for providing forage while supporting post-nickel mining land reclamation.

Abstract

Objective: Clitoria ternatea L is a legume that has the potential as animal feed. This study determined to evaluate tannins, flavonoids, and lignin levels in different urea fertilizer applications and harvesting ages. Methods: This study used a split-plot design with three replications. The main plots were urea levels (0 kg/ha, 100 kg/ha, and 200 kg/ha), as subplots were harvesting ages (30, 45, and 60 days after planting (DAP)). Fresh weights of Clitoria ternatea L harvested at the ages of 30, 45 and 60 DAP were weighed and recorded. The weighed forage is put in newspapers and dried in a 55°C oven for three days to gain a constant dry weight. The dried samples were then ground using a willey mill with a sieve porosity of 1 mm. Furthermore, the sample is analyzed to determine the content of secondary metabolites. The parameters observed were tannins, flavonoids, and lignin levels. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze Research data, and Duncan's Multiple Range (DMRT) was used to analyze the differences between means. Results: The lowest lignin content of Clitoria ternatea L was prodiced in non-urea treatment (20.64± 2.53%), and significantly different compared to various levels of urea fertilization treatment (P<0.05). The highest tannin levels were obtained at 30 DAP harvest age (4.20±0.56%) and significantly different (P<0.05) from tannin levels at 45 and 60 DAP. The lowest flavonoid levels were obtained when the plants were harvested in 60 DAP (0.87±0.05%) and significantly different (P<0.05) compared to 30 and 45 DAP.Conclusions: The increase of urea fertilization level in Clitoria ternatea L only significantly affected lignin levels. The decrease of lignin content value is linear with the increase of harvesting age. In contrary, harvesting age of Clitoria ternatea L showed significant linear effects on tannins and flavonoids value.
