Abstract

This study examines the integration of Toraja cultural elements in the sentence writing of English Education students at UKI Toraja. Using a quantitative descriptive analysis with 56 participants, the research utilized a questionnaire to evaluate engagement with local cultural aspects. The results show a significant incorporation of traditional food and natural landscapes, which received mean scores of 59 and 63, respectively, indicating students' appreciation for their heritage and enhancing their identity through sensory experiences. However, cultural expressions such as Londe/Pantun and the Rambu Tuka’ ceremony were less represented, with mean scores of 41 and 52, revealing gaps in students' familiarity and confidence. These findings highlight the need for educational initiatives that encourage the exploration of underrepresented cultural elements, thereby enriching student narratives and providing a more comprehensive portrayal of Toraja culture. Expanding curricular approaches to include diverse expressions of local heritage can improve writing skills and strengthen cultural connections among students.

Abstract

Philanthropic initiatives during disaster events have become embedded in Indonesian society. It also manifests in a digital humanitarian practice during the COVID-19 pandemic, categorized by the government as a non-natural disaster from 2020 to 2023. The spreading of misinformation and inaccurate data on cases of COVID-19 patients, have become an obstacle in the early stages of efforts to stop fatalities. As the government imposes lockdown and restrictions access to information, the news media as one of the key sources of information is under attack. Thus, citizen initiatives in stopping the pandemic are worth documented as a lesson learned when managing disasters in the future. By conducting qualitative method, this research describes the implementation of participatory journalism in practice related to the data gathering and reporting on COVID-19 cases in Indonesia by "LaporCovid-19" and "KawalCOVID19". This research finds both platforms carry out digital humanitarian practices while organizing citizens and producing, curating, and disseminating information. As the government imposes lockdown and restricted access toward media and journalists, the digital humanitarian practice involves citizens through decentralization, self-organization, volunteerism, and the optimization of digital platforms. The collaboration is a multidisciplinary subject that combines crises management, communications, network collaborative organizational structures, social computing and technology. In conclusion, their efforts offer a model to develop citizen participation in the non-natural disaster using digital apps and citizen resources. The model intertwines participatory journalism and digital humanitarian practices that engage citizens during the pandemic on both digital platforms contribute to other citizens' efforts to prevent and overcome health crises.

Abstract

The cross-cultural adaptation in different ethnic and religious communities is not an easy process. Stereotype factors, prejudice, and ethnocentrism will affect the process. In most cases, the cross-cultural adaptation process cannot be optimal and cause psychological pressure and disharmonious interactions between immigrants and hosts. However, the Javanese-Muslim Pagayaman and Balinese Hindus can adapt well. The success of the cross-cultural adaptation is supported by the cultural competence and local wisdom of the two communities. This study aims to determine the cultural competence and local wisdom of Javanese-Muslim Pagayaman and Balinese Hindus in the village of Pagayaman located in Buleleng Regency, Bali Province, during the cross-cultural adaptation process. The study uses the theory of cultural adaptation from Young Yun Kim and a qualitative approach and case study methods from Robert K Yin. Research participants are community and religious leaders. The findings show that the adaptation model performed by both Balinese Hindus and Pagayaman Muslims is integration. Successful adaptation is supported by cultural competencies such as respect (valuing other cultures,  cultural diversity), openness (to intercultural learning and people from other cultures, withholding judgment), curiosity, and discovery (tolerating ambiguity and uncertainty).

Abstract

This study addresses the research gap in understanding the types and patterns of visualization used in Covid-19 infographics. By analyzing infographics from popular media platforms in Indonesia, such as Katadata.co.id and Tirto.id, this research aims to fill the existing gap and find visual trends and preferences relevant to health communication. The theoretical framework draws upon concepts from visual communication, information design theory, and health communication. Using a qualitative approach and content analysis techniques, the study examines a sample of infographics from the aforementioned media platforms, categorizing the visualization and showing key trends and preferences. The findings reveal that both media outlets predominantly utilize illustrations, graphics, and text elements rather than charts. Bar graphs and column charts are the most widely used chart types, with Katadata.co.id showing higher frequency of chart elements compared to Tirto.id. Additionally, Katadata.co.id presents a greater number of interactive charts. The colors commonly employed for charts include blue, yellow, orange, and brown. However, the study does not delve into underlying reasons for these visual trends, whether they stem from specific visual strategies employed by the media or are influenced by other factors. The research findings contribute to the development of visually appealing and easily understandable infographics for policymakers and graphic designers.
