Abstract

Rats are significant pests in oil palm plantations, attacking nearly all growth stages of the plants and causing damage that adversely affects productivity, leading to substantial losses. The protozoan Sarcocystis sp. is a parasite that infects rats and, in sufficient quantities, can cause death in these hosts. This protozoan is naturally present in rats but typically in small amounts. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sarcosporidiasis (the presence of Sarcocystis sp.) in several rat species inhabiting smallholder oil palm plantations in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. Rat sampling was conducted from June to August 2025 using baited traps. The captured rats were then identified and categorized by species, sex, and weight. Sarcocystis sp. infection was detected by observing the presence of 'milky white threads' in the muscles, particularly in the rats' legs. The data obtained were analyzed both descriptively and quantitatively. Results showed that two rat species were captured: Rattus argentiventer and Rattus tiomanicus. Only 29.4% of the captured rats tested positive for the protozoan, of which 63.3% were male and 36.7% were female. All rats testing positive for the protozoan belonged exclusively to the R. tiomanicus species

Abstract

Weeds are annoying plants that can harm the main crop, weeds can grow quickly without being desired and also become obstacles to other activity mechanisms on the same land. The research was carried out in the practical garden of the Indonesian Palm Oil Technology Institute (ITSI), namely the Plantation campus, which has supporting facilities in the form of Oil palm plantation with an area of 6 hectares, this oil palm plantation (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) has diverse plant vegetation with a height of 25 meters above sea level. This research focuses on exploring weed diversity in oil palm plantations at the Indonesian Palm Oil Technology Institute (Medan). By using field survey methods and vegetation analysis, the data is presented in qualitative descriptive form. This research reveals the types and distribution of weeds present, providing in-depth insight into the diversity of oil palm plantation ecosystems. The findings of this study show variations in weed vegetation and types that influence ecosystem balance. This research provides an important basis for further understanding of weed dynamics in oil palm plantations, creating a foundation for the development of more appropriate and sustainable management strategies.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the biology of Elaeidobius kamerunicus in lowland and highland environments. The study was conducted at the Laboratory of the Indonesian Oil Palm Institute of Technology, Medan, from March to May 2026. Samples were collected from the Practical Plantation of the Indonesian Oil Palm Institute of Technology, located at an elevation of 14.46 m above sea level and representing the lowland site, and from PTPN IV Bah Birong Ulu Plantation, located at an elevation of 700 m above sea level and representing the highland site. Observations covered all developmental stages, including eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. The results showed that E. kamerunicus developed more rapidly in the lowland environment than in the highland environment, as indicated by differences in the duration of the pre-adult stages and adult longevity between the two locations. These differences were presumed to be associated with variations in environmental temperature, which may influence insect metabolic rates and development. The findings provide scientific information that may serve as a basis for the management of E. kamerunicus populations to enhance pollination effectiveness and oil palm productivity under different environmental conditions.

Abstract

Background: The fire caterpillar Setothosea asigna is a major defoliating pest of oil palm, and its control still relies heavily on chemical insecticides. Objective: This study aimed to determine the mortality symptoms of S. asigna caused by attacks from the predator Sycanus sp. and to evaluate the effectiveness of its instar stages 3, 4, and 5 as biological control agents. Methods: A non-factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) was used with four treatments (F0 = control; F1 = instar 3; F2 = instar 4; F3 = instar 5, each of three predators paired with ten S. asigna instar 3 larvae) and six replications, conducted on oil palm seedlings under mesh cages at Institut Teknologi Sawit Indonesia, Medan, from February to June 2026. Mortality was observed every 12 hours for four days and analyzed by ANOVA followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test at 5%. Results: Predator attacks caused larval skin shrinkage within 30–90 minutes after stylet piercing, followed by colour change from fresh green to yellowish-brown, then dark brown/blackish after more than 24 hours. By the eighth observation, mortality reached 95.00% (F1), 98.33% (F2), and 98.33% (F3), all significantly higher than the control (0.00%), with F2 and F3 not significantly different. Conclusions: Sycanus sp. instars 3, 4, and 5 are all effective biological control agents against S. asigna, supporting their use in environmentally friendly integrated pest management in oil palm
