Abstract

Introduction : The aim of this study was to determine serum lactate dehydrogenase activity and its correlation with carbohydrate intake in advanced lung cancer patients at Dharmais National Cancer Hospital Jakarta. Cancer Cells are characterized by increase anaerobic glycolysis termed the Warburg effect with lactate as an end product, catalyzed by LDH enzyme. Activities of lactate in cancer influences on tumor growth initiation, survival, proliferation, angiogenesis and metastasis. Serum LDH activity can be used as a diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive marker for tumor sensitivity and resistancy to therapy.Methods :56 subjects of advanced lung cancer from Dharmais National Cancer Hospital Jakarta were included in this cross sectional study. Subjects were recruited by consecutive sampling. Food intake of total carbohydrate was obtained by utilizing 24 hours food recall method. The activity of  serum LDH (IU/L) was measured by using enzymatic spectrophotometry method on automated analyzer.Results :The mean of age subjects was 56,98 ± 10,36 years old and 55,4% were male. Carbohydrate intake based on 24 hours food recall was 57,64 ± 10,85%. The median of LDH activity was 541,5 (164–6539) IU/L, 60,7% was increase.Conclusion :This study showed medium negative significant correlation (p = 0,017, r = - 0,317) between total carbohydrate intake per day in grams with LDH serum activity. If carbohydrate source is reduced, the LDH enzyme will increase to keep the glycolysis process going. The results of this study indicate that an adequate carbohydrate needed in patients with cancer.

Abstract

Background   :Maternal zinc deficiency may cause hindrance in breast milk ejection and low zinc content in breast milk. This may cause zinc deficiency in babies. Therefore, adequate zinc intake is crucial to maternal and baby’s health. Food source of zinc are mainly protein rich foods. High intake of fiber may decrease zinc bioavailability as they usually contain phytate. Objective        :This study aimed to profile zinc, total protein, and fiber intake among lactating mother in Jakarta. Methods         :This was a cross sectional study conducted in Grogol Petamburan Public Health Center, West Jakarta and Cilincing Public Health Center, North Jakarta between February and April 2019. Consecutive sampling method was used to recruit 95 lactating mothers aged 20-35 who were nursing 1-6 months old babies. Basic characteristic data such as socioeconomic level and education level was collected during interview process. Semi questionnaire food frequency questionnaire was used to gain zinc intake data and 24 hours food recall was used to gain protein and fiber intake data. Results            :The prevalence of zinc deficiency in Jakarta was 76.8% although 56% had taken enough daily protein. 99% of the samples had low fiber intake. Around 47% of subjects have monthly income lower than regional minimum wage and 68% of the samples has middle level of education. Conclusion     :Zinc intake among maternal diet in Jakarta is below the recommendation although more than half of the samples had taken enough daily protein and very low fiber. The protein intake must furthermore be specialized into animal and vegetable protein to increase the accuracy of the data. A specialized education about the importance of zinc for maternal health and food sources of zinc must be conducted among lactating woman. The need of zinc supplementation might be considered.

Abstract

The benefit to have infants being delivered physiologically through vagina is amongst others to get maternal microbes transmission that will affect host immunity and metabolic development. However this mode of delivery is not always the choice to infants for several reasons. Therefore, it raises questions whether there is a need to give specific intervention to the caesarean section (C-section) born infants and children for their optimal growth and development, i.e. provision of nutrients with or without pre-, pro- or synbiotics. Nutritional intervention is certainly important to support growth and development of all children, especially those born by C-section. However, in addition, to anticipate perturbation in the gut microbiota there is a need to prepare the C-section born infant through translocation from the mother’s intestinal microbiota, early initiation of breastfeeding and/or synbiotic supplementation formula. The superiority of synbiotic compare to prebiotic or probiotic alone is that synbiotic thought to have synergistic beneficial effects on the immune and metabolic systems in which it compensates the delayed Bifidobacterium colonization in C-section delivered infants and modulates the production of acetate and the acidification of the gut. However we still need to find consistent evidence & recommendation in the world on synbiotic for children in general and specifically for the C-section born infant & children that may have an impact on healthy young children’s gut microbiota.

Abstract

Diarrhea in children, especially if it recurs or persistent, can have an impact on the nutritional status of the child and lead to stunting. Apart from that, diarrhea also has an impact on children's cognitive in the future, regardless of their nutritional status.

Abstract

Low grade inflammation has been recognized of being involved in the pathogenesis of chronic disease pandemic. Individual lifestyle plays a major role in the development of low grade inflammation. Sedentary workers are at risk of low grade inflammation due to the nature of their work. Dietary habit also contributes to inflammatory status in the body. Dietary fiber intake indirectly affects the immune system. It has been hypothesized that fiber has anti-inflammatory effects, both body weight-related and body weight-unrelated This review will focus more on body weight-unrelated anti-inflammatory effect of fiber, especially through fiber’s fermentation metabolites, the short chain fatty acid (SCFA). Its anti-inflammatory effect can be seen by monitoring a biomarker of inflammation in the body, the high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). This review’s objective is to cover the mechanisms and role of dietary fiber intake on serum hsCRP level as a marker of low grade inflammation on sedentary workers.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a new era, it altered many aspects of lives all over the world. Many studies found the changes in nutrient and dietary intake, habits and patterns, also food and nutrition supplement consumption in many countries. Changes in lifestyle, physical activity and excercise patterns were observed in many studies around the world as outcome of lockdown, isolation, or community movement restriction regulations imposed by governments during the COVID-19 pandemic .

Abstract

Poor linear growth, currently defined as inadequate height to growth standards defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is still a major problem in low-middle-income countries (LMICs) including Indonesia. The national survey results from 36.8% in 2007 to 30.8% in 2018 showed small differences in under-five years old children with height-for-age-Z-score less than -2 standard deviation (HAZ < -2 SD) from the growth reference or stunted.1 Though the Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey results showed an improvement in the stunting rate to 21.6% in 2022, the data revealed large regional disparities, ranging from 8% in Bali to 35.3% in East Nusa Tenggara.2 It is known that for children with stunted growth in early life, the risk of impaired health, mortality, and delayed neurocognitive and motor development is heightened. Moreover, tend to have a long-term effect of decreased performance in education, lower productivity and socioeconomics, and a higher risk of chronic diseases in adulthood.1,3 Stunting has many associated factors, including socioeconomic inequality, geographic differences, maternal factors, such as education, age, nutrition status, and infection; short birth intervals, low birth weight, and preterm birth, food insecurity, practices of feeding, nutrient deficiencies, such as protein, iron, zinc, calcium, and vitamins, childhood morbidity, and environmental. Low birth weight and length, unimproved sanitation, and low protein intake are the leading risk factors in developing countries, especially in the horticulture area.4,5

Abstract

Introduction: Inadequate energy intake was prevalent among women of reproductive age, which may contribute to poor diet. Having great concern towards health and nutrition may play a role in shaping eating habit and food-related behavior to achieve a healthy diet. This study aims to examine the association between health concern and energy intake, while considering other factors such as cooking frequency and having food away from home.Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in an urban slum area in Jakarta, involving 233 mothers of young children through consecutive sampling. Data was collected through interview using structured questionnaire, including 2x24-hour dietary recall. All statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Version 20.Results: Energy intake of most subjects did not meet the recommendation. There was no significant correlation between health concern measured by General Health Interest Scale and energy intake. The frequency of having take-out food was a significant predictor of the energy intake. Additionally, a significant negative correlation between health concern and having take-out food was found.Conclusion: Having take-out food was associated with energy intake. Provision of health and nutrition information in the food stores might help to increase health concern to shape a healthier diet. Thus, a collaborative effort targeting both food sellers and customers is essential.
