Abstract

Vygostky's learning theory discussed in this article was pioneered by a figure named Lev Vygotsky who argued that learning is a social process. According to him, children have expertise in developing knowledge starting from social interactions with their social environment. One of the applications is cooperative learning conducted in a group, which contains a group of children who have different abilities to work together and help each other. Vygotsky's theory has the advantage that students are able to think together in solving problems so that the problem can be solved, but it also has the disadvantage that the time needed is longer because of the different abilities of students. The writing of this article aims to find out the history of the Vygotsky theorist, the concept of Vygotsky theory, the implementation of Vygotsky theory in education and its influence in learning. The author uses literature review and questionnaire methods in writing this article. The results obtained from this study were that some of the respondents felt helped by the implementation of Vygotsky's theory in learning, while others did not feel helped or neutral.

Abstract

Debate serves as a vital method in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, offering students a platform to enhance their speaking skills. However, EFL students often encounter challenges in debates, including the use of vague language. This study investigates the occurrence and patterns of vague language (VL) in EFL students’ debates, aiming to fill a gap in the literature regarding its impact in educational settings. Employing discourse analysis, data were collected from debate transcripts of 24 fourth- semester students at a public university in Central Java, Indonesia. The findings revealed 261 instances of vague language out of 9,317 words spoken, with vague possibility indicators being the most frequent (52.11%). While vague intensifiers and subjectivizer were present, they did not match the frequency of vague possibility indicators. The analysis illustrates the strategic importance of vague language in debates, despite its potential stemming from limited language proficiency. VL served various communication purposes: generalizing statements, navigating limited knowledge and proficiency, maintaining face wants and politeness, giving the right amount of information, saving time by simplifying communication, defending arguments confidently, being a rhetorical device, adding emotion, and helping to express complex ideas. Moreover, the study highlights the need to enhance both linguistic skills and strategic tactics among students to navigate complex debate scenarios effectively. The implications underscore the importance of addressing linguistic proficiency in EFL education, integrating explicit instruction on identifying and avoiding vague language, and fostering a culture of linguistic awareness in the classroom to promote effective communication skills among students.

Abstract

The learner's strategy in learning a language is one of the things that we must pay attention to, especially in learning a new language such as English. For students of English education who study English, they are usually given specific strategies starting from the classroom to everyday life. However, it is different from a student's non-English department. They must have their own perspective to learn English which they must know and understand for their own benefit. Both the English and non-English departments must have perspectives and strategies that match their criteria. This research aims to prove the presence of the different strategies they used. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative. The researchers used a questionnaire as their instrument with a total of 32 participants. The finding underlines the two things: the difficulties and the strategies. The difficulties commonly faced by students of non-English department because they realized that English is important but they don’t use English as their everyday life. Thus, it is considered difficult to be practiced. Meanwhile, there were strategic factors used by students both internal factors, self-taught learning using social media, and external factors such as courses. This research gives valuable to the teachers who want to teach their students especially for the learner’s non-English department

Some respondents had a negative attitude towards TikTok. Some respondents had a negative attitude towards TikTok, stating that TikTok can make students lose focus and contribute to procrastination, which is a hot issue in the modern world, namely the problem of time management in the educational framework. This study proves that using TikTok creates a dilemma between risks and possibilities for Generation Z students in educational settings. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of using TikTok in learning and teaching, students and educators should better understand the subject matter and find ways to use TikTok effectively to complement the learning process and simultaneously prevent negative implications. These guidelines are necessary to bring out the instructional facilities of TikTok and prevent the disruption of the learning process.
