Abstract

The level of concentration is one of the things that is important in the learning process since it can determine whether the students understand the learning material being taught or not. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of finding out what factors can influence students' learning concentration, especially in terms of the classroom situation and the sense of FOMO they might feel, as well as how students overcome this sense of FOMO when doing assignments. In order to obtain the required data, the researcher used a qualitative research method and shared questionnaires to fourth semester English Education students at Universitas Tidar. From the questionnaire that was filled in by 47 students, it was found that the noisy, boring class and when students were sleepy were the class situation that could affect their learning concentration. In addition, the feeling of FOMO also affects their concentration, especially when students know that their friend had done the task, while the student had not. The effect is that this can slow down student development, because when doing assignments students would seem in a hurry because they wanted to finish quickly without really understanding the material.

Abstract

Four language skills are needed to master a language: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Two aspects are needed to communicate in written form: vocabulary mastery and writing skills. Someone needs writing skills and extensive vocabulary knowledge to create good writing. Even so, it was found that there were still students who had difficulties in translating words from Indonesian to English and vice versa, challenges in using the right words, and problems in constructing sentences in English. In addition, some students still have limited knowledge of vocabulary. This study focused on finding the students’ vocabulary mastery level, writing skills level, and the correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing skills. A person will master four language skills, including writing, easier if they have a broad vocabulary. The more comprehensive the vocabulary knowledge, the more vocabulary will be used in writing; hence, the vocabulary used in the writing will be more varied. Correlation research was used in this study. The study population was 9th graders of SMP Negeri 1 Bandongan, and the sample was 29 students from class 9B at SMP Negeri 1 Bandongan. The study instruments were a vocabulary test and a writing test. The instruments were derived from previous research. The data taken was analyzed using a correlation test with SPSS. The results of this study show no significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing skills with the Sig value. (2-tailed) 0.145 > 0.05. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient is 0.278. Hence, the correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing skills was low. This study suggests that teachers and students focus on learning and mastering vocabulary and other aspects that influence writing ability and the writing itself.

Abstract

Students need to be able to speak English, yet many fail owing to a lack of classroom experience. While teachers often explain content, students mostly listen, which limits improvements. To solve this, innovative teaching strategies, like the duet conversation strategy, can help improve students' speaking abilities. The aim of this study was to find out the effectiveness of duet conversation strategy using TikTok on students’ speaking skill. The method of this study was pre-experimental research. The design used in this study was one group pre-test and post-test design for one group. The research participants were 31 students of a state junior high school in Magelang.Oral tests were carried out to collect research data. The data was analysed by a statistical expert using paired sample t-test. Based on the result of paired sample t-test, the Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 lower than 0.05. The result showed that duet conversation strategy on TikTok significantly affect students' speaking abilities. This study highlights the effectiveness ofduet conversation strategyusing TikTok can be implemented as an alternate media to assist learners in improving their speaking skill.  However, there are still some difficulties such as the presence of unfamiliar words and lack of time when students are practicing using duet conversation on TikTok. Implementing duet conversation strategy on TikTok has the potential to increase students' speaking abilities, but it must be carefully planned and integrated into the curriculum to coincide with more formal and organized language learning objectives.

Abstract

Vygostky's learning theory discussed in this article was pioneered by a figure named Lev Vygotsky who argued that learning is a social process. According to him, children have expertise in developing knowledge starting from social interactions with their social environment. One of the applications is cooperative learning conducted in a group, which contains a group of children who have different abilities to work together and help each other. Vygotsky's theory has the advantage that students are able to think together in solving problems so that the problem can be solved, but it also has the disadvantage that the time needed is longer because of the different abilities of students. The writing of this article aims to find out the history of the Vygotsky theorist, the concept of Vygotsky theory, the implementation of Vygotsky theory in education and its influence in learning. The author uses literature review and questionnaire methods in writing this article. The results obtained from this study were that some of the respondents felt helped by the implementation of Vygotsky's theory in learning, while others did not feel helped or neutral.
