Abstract

Pineapple peel waste can pollute the environment if not properly managed. On the other hand, pineapple peel waste can be used as a raw material for the production of bioethanol. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of variations in yeast concentration and the duration of the fermentation process on the bioethanol content of pineapple peel waste. In the fermentation process with variations in yeast concentration of 1.5%, 2% and 4%, the type of yeast used is Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the addition of nutrients in the form of NPK and urea by 0.5% each, as well as variations in the length of fermentation for 4 days, 5 days, 6 days, 7 days and 8 days. This study showed that the bioethanol content obtained was significantly influenced by yeast concentration and fermentation time. The sample with the highest ethanol content was produced with the addition of 4% yeast and fermentation for 5 days, the bioethanol content produced was 59% based on calculations using the standard ethanol curve equation and 57.23% based on analysis using GC-MS.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the kinetics of CO₂ absorption reaction of automobile exhaust gas using potassium hydroxide (KOH) as an absorbent in a jet bubble reactor. The jet bubble reactor was chosen because of its ability to increase the contact area between gas and liquid, thereby increasing the absorption efficiency. The variables analyzed in this study include KOH concentration, gas flow rate, and operating temperature. A study was conducted on CO₂ gas absorption in automotive gas using pure KOH alkali base solution and maximizing absorption in CO₂ exhaust gas. This study was conducted using concentration variations. (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 M), which is an important step to reduce the greenhouse effect that will negatively affect the environment.

Abstract

The demand for high-quality and safe drinking water continues to increase in line with population growth and limited clean water sources. This study aims to analyze the effect of operating pressure and raw water sources (PDAM water and Sukomoro water) on the quality of drinking water produced by the Reverse Osmosis (RO) process using the Goldy ULP-2012-100G membrane. The research was conducted at the Energy Engineering Laboratory of Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya over a period of six months, using pressure variations ranging from 3 to 7 bar. The parameters analyzed included TDS, pH, permeate flux, and rejection efficiency. The results showed that increasing operating pressure positively affected TDS removal efficiency, permeate flux, and pH improvement. The optimal pressure was found at 6 bar, achieving a 95% rejection rate and the highest permeate flux. PDAM water yielded more stable results compared to Sukomoro water, which showed fluctuations in the second trial, possibly due to fouling. The treated water from both sources met the drinking water quality standards based on the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 492 of 2010 and No. 2 of 2023. This study confirms that the RO system using the Goldy ULP-2012-100G membrane can effectively process various raw water sources into potable water, with the best efficiency achieved at 6 bar of operating pressure.

Abstract

Natural zeolite is a porous material with great potential as a heterogeneous catalyst, but its catalytic activity still needs to be improved. One way to improve the basic properties of zeolite is by modifying it using potassium fluoride (KF). This study aims to produce a strong base catalyst based on natural zeolite/KF and characterize its crystal structure using the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) method. The catalyst synthesis process includes initial zeolite activation, impregnation with varying KF concentrations (1.5%–3.5%), and calcination at 500–700°C. The XRD characterization results show that the sample with a KF concentration of 2.5% and a calcination temperature of 600°C (code T248) produced the best catalyst, with a crystallite size of 176 Å and the lowest microstrain of 0.25%, as well as a very high degree of crystallinity. This indicates that these conditions are optimal for producing a stable and regular crystal structure. The catalyst produced in this study has the potential to be used in various chemical reaction applications, such as transesterification for biodiesel production.
