THE USE OF STORY FACE IN TEACHING READINGCOMPREHENSION OF NARRATIVE TEXT IN SMK SWASTADWIWARNA MEDAN*Maisaroh sartika Damanik**Rika**Yeni ErlitaABSTRACTThis study was aimed to find out the process of teaching reading comprehensionthrough story face of narrative text and students’ problems in the process oflearning reading comprehension through story face of narrative text. The researchwas conducted by using descriptive qualitative. The data were analyzed byqualitative analysis technique which consists of three procedures, namely: datacondentation, data display and drawing/conclusion. The data were the result ofobserving and interviewing of students at SMK Swasta Dwiwarna Medan. Thedata were analyzed based on teaching reading comprehension through story faceby Randolp (2012). The findings showed that the process of teaching learningreading by using story face could help the students in learning reading butteaching reading comprehension by using story face was still less effective ingrade tenth in SMK Swasta Dwiwarna Medan. The teacher had followed theprocedure well based on the Randolp(2012), but the teacher did not manage thetime well. There were some students’ problems in learning readingcomprehension of narrative text by using story face. The problems were: (a)students lack vocabulary mastery, (b) The students had problem to decode wordsand sentence, (c) Students had problem to get main idea of the text and to figureout the inference of the text, (d) Students had habit of slow reading, (e) Studentshad problem in working memory to remember the text, (f) students were beingpassive during learning process and they did not confidence, they felt afraid tomake a mistake in learning reading.Key words:Reading comprehension, students’ problems in learning reading,Story Face, Teaching reading story face.

The aim of this study was to develop descriptive writing material through text-less comic for grade X of SMA GEMA BUWANA. The research was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering data and information, analyzing data, designing text-less comic, validating by the experts, revising and final product. The subject of the study was grade ten of SMA GEMA BUWANA. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 25 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result prove that the students need text-less comic in teaching writing which can stimulate students’ ability and develop thinking process through looking for, guessing, and logically. Using text-less comic in learning process also helps students to understand the material by themselves. The product has been validated by an English lecturer and an English teacher with the interval was 4.3. The product was categorized as “Very Good” descriptive writing material through text-less comic. The final product of this study was a material of developed descriptive writing material through text-less comic, it consisted one part that has 3 kinds of descriptive cover the learning needs.Keywords: Text-Less Comic, Descriptive Writing Material, Research and Development (R & D)

The study was aimed to develop media based on PowToon in teaching writing recount text for grade VIII students in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of the study was Grade VIII of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Medan. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result prove that the students’ needs English learning media which can motivate the students to understand about the recount writing. The product has been validated by experts. The result of the product was videos that contain audio-visual media to be used in mastering the recount text writing. The result of experts’ validation showed that the media was an appropriate media to be used in teaching writing recount text by getting the average percentage of 95% categorized as excellent.Keywords: PowToon, Recount Text, Research and Development (R&D)

THE USE OF BLENDED LEARNING IN TEACHING WRITING RECOUNT TEXT TO THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 20 MEDAN *Nurul Aulia **Anni Holila Pulungan **Yeni Erlita ABSTRACT This research dealt with blended learning used by the teachers in teaching writing recount text. The objectives of this study were (1) to explain the use of blended learning for teaching writing recount text to the tenth grade students; (2) to analyze the problems faced by teachers of using blended learning in teaching learning process of writing recount text. This study was qualitatively conducted that involved two English teachers of SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The data were collected by using recording, interview and observing the whole processes of teaching writing. The findings of this study showed that both teachers used the three processes in blended learning setting, such as: conventional learning, emphasizes learning actively and interactive learning. It was also found that the use of blended learning was used in the scientific approach activity. There were four problems faced by teachers in using blended learning, such as the problem of the traditional mindset, the problem of managing and assessing learner progress, bandwidth, and confusion in using the application. The objective of this study is to develop suitable procedure text materials for reading skill, for computer and network engineering students. It was found that procedure text materials provided in the students’ textbook were not suitable to the needs and interests of computer and network engineering students. This research was conducted based on educational research and development (R&D) through five steps, namely: gathering data, analyzing data, developing procedure text materials, validating procedure text materials, and revising procedure text materials. The subject of this study was XI-3 TKJ students at SMK Harapan Stabat and the instruments used to collect the data were observation list, questionnaire, and interview. Based on the needs analysis conducted there were 6 procedure texts related to computer and network engineering developed. These texts were accompanied by vocabularies and 12 varied exercises. These developed procedure text materials had been validated by two experts and the average score gotten is 4.18. It is categorized “Good” since the mean is within the interval 3.40 < ≤ 4.19. It means that the developed procedure text materials for reading skill are suitable for the eleventh grade students of computer and network engineering.

The objective of the study were investigate the types of teacher’s feedback on writing which given by the teacher’s and to find out how the teacher’s gave feedback on writing recount text on the grade eight, to elaborate the reasons of the teacher conducting the feedback on students writing of grade eight in MTs Tarbiyah Islamiyah Hajoran. This research used descriptive qualitative method and the data were collected through documentation and interview. The data was analyzed in four steps: 1). Data Collection, 2) Data Condensation, 3) Data Display, 4) Conclusion and Drawing/ verifying. The findings There were two types of feedback found on students’ writing recount text on the grade eight students of MTs Tarbiyah Islamiyah Hajoran. They were : Direct and Indirect. First the teacher gave direct feedback by giving some signs to indicate their error words such as circle,line and crosswise then provide the corect form directly. The teacher also added the letters or words to make the clear sentence. Direct feedback which is provided in the 37 of the total feedback and has perecentage as many as 79%. Second , it was indirect feedback, the indicated the students error exists without gave the correct form. It has many percentages 21% of 10 the total feedback. Based on the analysis interview, the reason why the teacher used those types of feedback on students’ writing was because it could make the students’ have more vocabularies and the students did not think more about what was the correct word. In conclusion, teacher’s feedback are important to make student aware of making mistake on their writing task. The finding suggested that the English teacher should give the written feedback to students’ writing task to enable the improve the writing skill.Keywords: Teachers’ feedback, Students, Recount Text, Writing

This study deals with the Error Analysis on English Department Students’ Thesis Backgrounds in State University of Medan. The objective of this research are: 1. To find the types of errors are frequently found in thesis background written by graduated students of English department at State University of Medan. 2. To find the source of the errors that found in the thesis background of graduated students of English Department. Related to the object of the research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. The research was conducted at Reading Room Faculty of Lamguages and Arts. The object of this research is 30 theses. The result of this research showed that there are 103 errors of Misformation that happened because the students write the sentences in present tense, while the thesis background study has to be written in past tense. The highest recapitulation showed that the most source of error is “intralingual transfer”. Keywords: error analysis, thesis backgrounds

This research was aimed to develop video as the teaching media of writing descriptive text for grade VIII students in SMP Brigjend.Katamso I Medan. This study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (2003). The method through six phases: conducting need analysis, designing, developing, experts validating, revising, and final product. The subjects of this research were 40 students of grade eighth of SMP Brigjend. Katamso I Medan which was located in Jl. Sunggal No. 370 Medan. The data and data resources were the teacher’s lesson plan, teacher’s interview, and students’ questionnaires result. After getting the last data, the media should be planned to be designed as the students’ needs. The media were developed and had been validated by the experts. The percentages of the media from the experts were 90% that categorized as very good. It can be concluded that video as one of the creative media to improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts.Key words: Research and development (R&D),Descriptive Text, Video, Writing, Junior High School.

The objective of this study was to find out whether the effect of using CIRC technique in writing narrative can improve students’ achievement in writing narrative text. It was conducted by using experimental research. The population of this study was eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Siempat Nempu Hulu, which was consisted of 4 classes. Two classes were taken as the sample by using random sampling technique. The class XI IPA 1 was as experimental group and XI IPA 2 was as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using CIRC, otherwise control group was taught by using conventional technique. The instrument for collecting data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result shows that CIRC has a significant effect on students achievement in writing narrative text. The result shows that the t-observed is higher than t-table (3.102 > 2.024 (α=0.05)) with the degree of freedom (df) = 20. Therefore, CIRC significantly affects on the students’ ability in writing narrative text. Keyword: Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC ), Writing, Narrative text.

The objectives of this study was to develop the writing materials in recount text for the eight grade students at SMP RK Serdang Murni Lubuk Pakam. This was a Research and Development (R&D) study. The subjects of the study were the students of eighth grade of SMP RK Serdang Murni Lubuk Pakam. The research procedures, were adapted from Jolly and Bolitho’s model in Tomlinson (1998) with some modifications, consisting of conducting the need analysis, writing the course grid, developing the first draft, getting expert judgment and evaluating the first draft, also revising the first draft of the materials.The instruments to collect the data were need analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaire. The data from the need analysis were analyzed quantitatively using frequency and precentage, then the results were used to develop the course grid. The data from the expert judgment were analyzed quantitatively through descriptive statistics while the suggestions were used to revise the first draft of the materials. The product of this study is a set of writing materials of recount text entitled “Guide for Writing” for students of eighth grade of SMP RK Serdang Murni Lubuk Pakam. The writing material is “My Unforgettable Experience”. It consists of Pre-writing, Drafting, Responding, and Editing tasks ranging 15 tasks. Based on the research findings from the expert judgment, the whole aspects of the developed materials were 3.76 which was in the range of 3.25 < x ≤ 4 and can be categorized as “very good”.
