Abstract

This research examines the integration of local wisdom and digital technology in the sustainable tourism development of Lake Toba, Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to explore how the combination of local cultural heritage and digital tools can contribute to the sustainable management of tourism resources in the region. The research aims to provide insights into the role of technology in promoting cultural tourism while preserving the authenticity of local traditions and the environment. A qualitative research approach was employed to gather data through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGD). A total of 15 informants, including tourism managers, local community members, and government officials, were involved in the study. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key themes and relationships between the integration of local wisdom and digital technology in the context of sustainable tourism. The results indicate that digital technology, particularly social media platforms and mobile applications, plays a significant role in promoting Lake Toba as a tourist destination, improving accessibility, and enhancing tourism experiences. However, the study also found that the integration of digital tools must be done carefully to avoid commodifying the local culture and to ensure the preservation of traditional values. Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of local community involvement in tourism management, as local wisdom is essential in maintaining the cultural identity and environmental sustainability of the area. This study contributes to the understanding of how the balance between digitalization and cultural preservation can create a sustainable tourism model that benefits both the local community and the environment. The findings suggest that collaborative efforts between local communities, tourism managers, and government institutions are necessary to promote sustainable tourism that respects local culture and promotes environmental conservation.

Abstract

This study aims to explore visitors' perceptions of Gelar Melayu Serumpun as a cultural tourism attraction in Medan. Gelar Melayu Serumpun is a cultural event that showcases various elements of Malay arts, cuisine, and crafts to introduce and preserve Malay culture in North Sumatra. Using a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews and participatory observation, the research analyzes visitors’ experiences and perceptions of the event. A total of 15-20 visitors from diverse backgrounds were selected as research subjects. The results show that the majority of visitors highly appreciate the cultural diversity presented, particularly in terms of Malay cuisine and craft exhibitions, which reflect the heritage of Malay culture. The event was considered successful in providing visitors with a deep understanding of Malay values and history. However, there are areas that need improvement, such as broader promotion outside Medan, which visitors believe would attract more international tourists. Additionally, visitors expressed a desire for more direct interaction with the cultural community, such as workshops or learning sessions on traditional craft-making and cuisine. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the event organizers enhance international promotion and improve facilities such as parking areas and seating. This study provides valuable insights for the development of cultural tourism in Medan and offers recommendations to enhance the quality of existing cultural events, while strengthening Medan's appeal as a competitive cultural tourism destination. Abstract

This research aims to analyze the integration of circular economy and waste-based culinary entrepreneurship (Product of Waste / POW) in creating sustainable food innovations in emerging markets. The object of the study was 210 culinary business actors who adopted waste management practices. The method used is a mixed-method with a Structural Equation Modeling (SEM-PLS) approach to test the relationships between variables. The results of the study show that circular economy adoption and entrepreneurial capability have a significant effect on waste-based product innovation, with POW as the main mediator in improving sustainability performance. These findings confirm that the transformation of waste into economic value depends not only on the availability of resources, but also on entrepreneurial capabilities. This research contributes to the development of integrative models that support sustainable food innovation and increase the competitiveness of culinary businesses.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of financial management and financial behavior on the performance of culinary MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) in Medan City, Indonesia. A quantitative approach was adopted, employing a survey method involving 100 randomly selected MSME owners. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using validity and reliability tests, classical assumption tests, and multiple linear regression analysis. The results reveal that both financial management (β = 0.476; p < 0.001) and financial behavior (β = 0.352; p = 0.002) have a positive and significant impact on MSME performance. The model explains 58.1% of the variation in MSME performance (R² = 0.581), indicating a strong explanatory power. The findings highlight the importance of financial literacy, structured bookkeeping, and rational financial behavior in enhancing operational efficiency and business sustainability. The study recommends the implementation of financial education programs and hands-on mentoring to strengthen the competitiveness and resilience of culinary MSMEs

Abstract

AbstractElderly-friendly tourism is becoming increasingly important as the elderly population increases, but many tourist destinations do not yet provide accessibility and services that meet the needs of this group. Previous studies have placed more emphasis on the development of theoretical frameworks, while implementation in the field is still limited and often does not take into account the social realities of tourist destinations. This study analyzes the elderly-friendly tourism management model in Berastagi by identifying obstacles in terms of accessibility, facilities, services, and safety based on the direct experience of elderly tourists. A mixed method  approach is used to obtain layered data, but this study consciously emphasizes more on a qualitative approach because the main focus is to explore the meanings, perceptions, and subjective experiences of the elderly as the basis for the formulation of management models. The survey of 100 elderly tourists only serves as a comparison to enrich qualitative analysis, in-depth interviews and participatory observations. The findings show that there is a gap between the availability of facilities and real access felt by the elderly, especially related to transportation, health services, and training of tourism workers. Based on these findings, this study offers a management model based on universal design and inclusive tourism that emphasizes policy integration, adaptive infrastructure, and improving service quality as a strategy towards sustainable elderly-friendly destinations.
