Abstract

The educational zoning system aims to support equal access to quality education in society through the distribution of schools by region. This policy is also expected to reduce transportation costs for students and help less fortunate families. However, the implementation of the zoning system faces various challenges, such as the unequal quality of education in several regions and inequality in facilities between schools in one zone. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. The type of data consists of primary data and secondary data. This research aims to understand the perceptions, attitudes, and expectations of the community towards the education zoning system policy to provide an overview of the pros and cons arising in the community regarding implementing this policy. The research results show i.) Community perceptions of the education zoning system, ii.) Community attitudes towards policy implementation, iii.) Community views regarding the effectiveness of zoning and iv.) Community expectations regarding the development of the zoning system. The results of this research show that there are diverse views among the community, both those who support and those who reject the zoning system. It is hoped that this research can become the basis for further studies to optimize education zoning system policies in a broader context.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores how adolescents in Ambon construct self-identity through the internalization of Korean popular culture (K-Pop) while maintaining ties to their local social context. Employing a qualitative approach—including participant observation, in-depth interviews, and digital ethnography—this research investigates how global aspirations, manifested through K-Pop fandom, changes in appearance, and participation in fan communities, are transformed into meaningful emotional and social expressions in everyday life. The findings reveal that youth identity performance is not passive imitation but a conscious negotiation of global cultural values with local religious, communal, and social norms. The study’s novelty lies in its geographic focus on Eastern Indonesia—an underrepresented site in popular culture studies—and its integration of affective sociology and youth cultural agency to frame glocalization as both an emotional and performative process. This research offers a significant contribution to cultural and emotional sociology by illuminating the active role of youth in reshaping identity through global media flows, while also providing conceptual grounding for more inclusive educational and cultural policy that reflects the complex dynamics of youth expression in a globalized era.

Abstract

This article examines how digital devices, particularly gadgets, function as symbolic capital in the formation of social identity and digital exclusion among adolescents in Ambon City, Indonesia. The study focuses on two areas with distinct social and geographical characteristics: Batu Merah (urban) and Laha (peripheral). The research aims to analyze the social meanings attached to gadget ownership, investigate the impact of unequal technological access on social exclusion, and explore how gadgets operate as markers of social status among youth. Employing a qualitative approach through phenomenology and mini-ethnography, data were collected via in-depth interviews, participant observation, and focus group discussions. Thematic analysis was conducted using Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework of symbolic capital, habitus, and social distinction. Findings reveal that among Ambonese youth, gadgets serve not only as communication tools but also as indicators of emerging social class. Urban adolescents tend to have greater access to advanced devices and faster internet, reinforcing their dominance in digital interactions, while those in peripheral areas face symbolic and practical exclusion. This study contributes to localized digital sociology by offering a contextual analysis of urban–rural dynamics in Ambon's social structure and highlights the need for social science and humanities research to critically address technological inequalities in Eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines intergenerational language transmission and identity formation among minority language speakers in the Kei Islands, Eastern Indonesia, where the Kei language (Veveu Evav) is gradually marginalized by the increasing dominance of Bahasa Indonesia. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were collected from three generational groups across ten families, alongside cultural leaders and teachers, through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, natural conversation recordings, and document analysis. The findings indicate that the Kei language remains strong in ritual and emotional domains but shows significant decline in educational and digital contexts. Parents act as linguistic mediators, balancing the preservation of traditional values with the practical demands of national language use. Younger speakers construct hybrid Kei identities through narratives, music, and online expressions, reflecting both local attachment and global aspiration. The study introduces the Intergenerational Identity Transmission Model (IITM), integrating intergenerational language transmission with identity formation, a linkage rarely explored in Indonesian sociolinguistics. This conceptual and empirical contribution broadens understanding of language socialization by incorporating online and interfaith dimensions, while providing insights for minority language revitalization and education policies that promote multilingual and culturally grounded identities.
