Abstract

The Government of Indonesia has introduced various programs to increase the cattle population. However, Indonesia still relies on imports to meet national demand. This study aimed to explore the impact of government program on the performance of farmer groups, particularly in socioeconomic aspect. Qualitative modelling using Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) of System Dynamics methodology was applied to connect the linkages among elements. A series of observations, semi-structured interviews, and workshops were undertaken involving two farmer groups from two districts; Banjarnegara and Banyumas. CLD showed a total of 6 loops; 3 balancing and 3 reinforcing loops. Each loop represented certain behaviour of the system. The study revealed that the program which initially designed to build engine of growth to boost population from farmers group level were not entirely implemented as it is. There were indications of selective adoption and side tracking. Farmers tended to prefer activities which more profitable and generate cash fasterly. A large amount of cash flow into farmers bank account provoked farmers to get immediate benefit, thus farmers choose the fattening over breeding which considered having shorter production cycle and disregarding the breeding which took longer time to produce cash.

Abstract

In this study, the elasticity of production costs to broiler business income with the partnership pattern in Banyumas regency and production costs and broiler business income with open and closed house systems were examined. The survey approach was used to conduct the research. As the research site, Banyumas regency, one of the hubs for broiler farming in Central Java, was deliberately chosen. Commercial broiler farmers were categorized according to their housing system when choosing the respondents, and 31 farmers used the open housing system, whereas 30 farmers used the closed housing system. The elasticity of production costs to revenue was examined using multiple linear regression while production costs and profits were assessed financially. According to the findings, commercial broiler farmers made an average of IDR 3,626,578 and IDR 4,896,844 each month for 1000 birds in open and closed houses, respectively. The price of DOC, the depreciation of housing, and the depreciation of the farmers' equipment all have a big impact on their revenue. This study's conclusion is that by lowering broiler mortality and making the best use of housing and equipment, farmers may increase their profitability.

The sample size was determined using purposive sampling. There were 65 informants from 4 groups of beef cattle farmers who received assistance in 2021 and 2022. Data analysis using Cash Flow and Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) qualitative modeling. The results of the cash flow analysis research found that one farmer group was considered efficient, one was inefficient, and the other two groups could not be identified because there was no revenue and expenditure data. Factors related to business performance of beef cattle farmers in Banyumas Regency based on Causal Loop Diagram were found to be livestock suitability, violation, motivation, and feed.

Abstract

The Pangandaran Regency in West Java has shown an increasing trend of beef cattle population over the past three years, reaching its peak of 18,938 in 2021, which indicates a potential opportunity for the development of beef cattle farming businesses. It is crucial to understand the key factors and strategies for this development. The study utilized a participatory survey method and the Harry King Nomogram technique to sample beef cattle farmers, collecting and analyzing the primary and secondary with descriptive, SWOT, and qualitative modeling analyses. The results showed that farmers in both lowland and highland areas were predominantly productive-aged. Performance metrics such as average service per conception and calving interval were observed at 14.48 and 2.37 in lowland areas, and 16.68 and 2.25 in highland areas, respectively. Key factors influencing the development of beef cattle farming in Pangandaran Regency included the availability of agricultural land, a supportive community environment, and effective breeding management. The SWOT analysis positioned both lowland and highland areas in quadrant I, suggesting that an aggressive growth-oriented strategy would be the most appropriate. Proposed strategies include increasing beef cattle population by optimizing agricultural land use, introducing technologies for processing forage feed and agricultural waste, aligning production with market demands through integrated farming practices, and implementing effective livestock waste management systems.

Abstract

Backgrund. This study aims to determine breeders 'knowledge and local feeding skills for beef cattle and to analyze the relationship between breeders' knowledge and local feeding skills for beef cattle in Bawang District, Banjarnegara Regency. The characteristics of breeders 'skills studied were farmer education level, age of breeders, and length of breeding in feeding balance, composition of feed and frequency of local feeding as well as breeders' knowledge of local feed. Materials and Methods. The research method used is a survey method. The determination of the sample area was carried out by purposive sampling method, namely taking areas that have a group of beef cattle breeders in Bawang District. Respondents were collected using the census method, namely by selecting members of the livestock farmer groups who were active and kept livestock in the last one year. The total number of respondents was 40 people, and the test used was the descriptive test and the Spearman rank correlation test. Results. The results showed that the level of knowledge of breeders in Bawang District was in the medium category. Skills in moderate feed composition, not skilled in determining the balance of feed and very skilled in frequency of feeding. The results of the spearman rank correlation analysis between breeders' knowledge and local feeding skills have a significant relationship with a strong correlation value of 0,411. This illustrates that with sufficient knowledge, the skills of farmers are sufficiently supportive in providing local feed to livestock. Knowledge has a positive influence on breeders' skills, so that increased knowledge about local feed will also be followed by increasing farmer skills in local feeding. Conclusion. The conclusion of the study is that there is a correlation between breeders' knowledge and local feeding skills in the highly skilled category of feeding frequency.
