Abstract

Abstract Ranu Klakah is located in Tegalrandu Village, Klakah District, Lumajang Regency, and is a center for freshwater fisheries, especially Tilapia fish. Tilapia fish commodities produced in Ranu Klakah have characteristics, including thick flesh and better taste, so the selling price can be higher than production from other areas. The problem that always occurs in Ranu Klakah every year is upwelling which causes tilapia fish to experience mass deaths. On the one hand, this situation is beneficial because apart from the cultivated fish also from Ranu it will be easily harvested in large quantities by the local community. On the other hand, the number of simultaneous harvests causes a buildup of Tilapia stock which will cause prices to drop compared to usual or damage if the fish are not sold immediately. It is also felt that knowledge of marketing methods for fishery products that keep up with current developments is still lacking so the Tilapia commodity from Ranu Klakah can only be enjoyed by the surrounding community. The Brawijaya University Doctoral Community Service Team offers a solution by implementing product diversification aimed at increasing shelf life and selling value which will also directly increase community food security. The activities carried out are in the form of community service through the socialization process, training in making nuggets and chips made from tilapia fish as well as the introduction of marketing systems using IT, mentoring, and evaluation for cultivator groups in Ranu Klakah.

Abstract

Ranu Klakah, a volcanic lake in East Java, is explored as a site for tilapia cultivation. Upwelling, the process of nutrient-rich deep water rising to the surface due to wind-induced currents, is examined for its effects on water quality and fish productivity. The activity focuses on the impact of upwelling on tilapia, including reduced water quality, scarcity of natural fish food, physiological stress, disease susceptibility, and decreased fish production. To address the challenges posed by upwelling, it suggests processing tilapia into value-added products, like fish nuggets and skin chips, to enhance market value. Community service activities involving training for making these processed fish products are described, aiming to empower women in the fish farming sector and improve family income. We conclude with insights into the potential benefits of these activities and their positive impact on the local community

Abstract

Pomegranate peel (Punica granatum L.) is commonly disregarded as a byproduct in the juice industry despite its rich content of bioactive compounds. This study investigates the impact of incorporating pomegranate peel extract at concentrations of 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% into rice starch-pectin-based films. Characterization of the films was conducted using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). Physicochemical properties including thickness, color, opacity, moisture content, water solubility, and water vapor permeability were assessed. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of pomegranate peel extract significantly enhanced the properties of the rice starch-pectin-based films (p < 0.05). Moreover, antimicrobial assays revealed substantial inhibition of Escherichia coli by films containing 3% pomegranate peel extract. Furthermore, the efficacy of these films was evaluated using real tomato samples to assess their potential to extend the shelf life of perishable foods. The findings suggest that the inclusion of pomegranate peel extract in the film matrix contributes to natural pigment preservation, mitigates microbial contamination, and maintains the organoleptic attributes of tomatoes, thereby potentially enhancing their shelf life. These results underscore the promising applications of pomegranate peel extract in the development of sustainable and functional food packaging materials.

Abstract

The Serayu River is one of the longest rivers in Central Java. Dams built in the lower reaches of the Serayu River are thought to block the migration paths of fish and aquatic macrocrustaceans. This study aimed to determine the effect of dam on Varuna litterata migration and its molecular identification. This research was conducted using the observation method. Migration observations were made on vertical paths while molecular identification of V. litterata in the lower reaches of the Serayu River was compared with existing data in GenBank. The study covered the freshwater area above the Serayu Dam, the open area with freshwater below the Serayu Dam, and the open area with brackish water at the estuary of the Serayu River, with a study length of 33.37 km. The results showed that the presence of dams in the lower reaches of the Serayu River inhibited the migration pattern of V. litterata. The vertical shape of the dam causes only a few V. litterata to migrate to the top of the dam. The dam in the lower reaches of the Serayu River resulted in not many V. litterata being able to migrate to the top of the dam, so there were very few V. litterata found in the population upstream of the dam (115 ind). The results of molecular identification of V. litratata using the cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (COI) gene show that this crab is 100% the same as the data in GenBank and is closely related to Varuna yui and other Varunidae crab species. Keywords: Dams, Molecular, Migration, Serayu River, Varuna litterata

Abstract

The community-based biogas project in Kasembon sub-district focuses on utilising livestock manure as a renewable energy source and organic fertiliser producer to improve community welfare and reduce negative environmental impacts. Through an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, the project identifies local assets, such as land and manure, and empowers the local community to maintain the biogas system. The biogas production process produces environmentally friendly energy and reduces dependence on LPG. In addition, the organic fertiliser made from biogas waste can be utilised in agriculture to improve productivity and soil health. The implementation of ABCD encourages collaboration between the community, government, and university, and creates new economic opportunities by selling organic fertiliser. However, challenges such as dependence on external assistance, high initial capital requirements, and technical limitations hinder long-term sustainability.
