Abstract

Abstract

This community service program was carried out in response to the increasing demands of professionalism in the hospitality industry, where frontliner appearance significantly affects guest impressions. Grooming is not only about physical appearance but also represents work ethics and service standards. The program took place at Planet Holiday Hotel Batam and involved five front office staff and 20 first-semester students from Batam Tourism Polytechnic. This activity aimed to improve frontliner grooming based on hotel industry standards. The method used was a combination of material presentation, practical demonstration, direct application, and group reflection. Each academic contributed to different roles such as proposal preparation, coordination with the hotel, training delivery, and discussion facilitation. The outcomes indicated a significant increase in participants' understanding, as shown in pre-test and post-test results. Hotel staff reported better awareness of grooming practices, while students expressed increased motivation and comprehension through hands-on learning. The session also promoted meaningful dialogue between academia and industry. Participants were highly enthusiastic, and the training environment was supportive and interactive. This success demonstrates the effectiveness of community service programs in bridging education and industry needs. Moreover, it opens up opportunities for future collaborations, such as structured internships or continuous professional training. The result of this program underscores the importance of experiential learning and cross-sectoral partnerships in preparing competent and industry-ready human resources. In conclusion, practical and collaborative models of community service like this provide a sustainable approach to workforce development and quality service improvement in hospitality.

Abstract

The failure of edutainment ventures has become an important issue in the field of educational entrepreneurship (edupreneurship), particularly in Indonesia where empirical studies on local edutainment practices remain limited. This study aims to analyze the factors contributing to the failure of NNS Batam, a role-play-based edutainment park for children that operated from 2019 to 2024, using a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected from four categories of informants—former managers, former employees, visitors, and edupreneurship scholars—through semi-structured interviews, location observation, and digital documentation. Thematic analysis revealed that the failure was not solely caused by external disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic but also by internal weaknesses including poor business strategy, lack of meaningful integration of educational values, absence of continuous innovation, and inadequate evaluation mechanisms. A notable gap was found between the company’s educational vision and its operational practices. Expert informants emphasized that sustainable edupreneurship requires synergy between pedagogical value and financial strategy. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of edutainment business failures in emerging urban contexts and offers practical insights for edupreneurs seeking to design adaptive, value-driven, and resilient education-based ventures.

Abstract

Yogyakarta's landscape is known for having experienced drought hazard. At the same time, there is a native tropical tree that has the ability to store the water and cope with the emerging drought. In this regard, this study is aiming to evaluate the potential distribution of the tropical native gayam forest tree (Inocarpus fagifer Forst.) to cope with the drought in the Yogyakarta landscape. Samplings of I. fagifer covered four districts (Sleman, Kulonprogo, Bantul, and Gunung Kidul) and one city (Yogyakarta City) and implemented from January to March 2025. The potential distribution was estimated using MaxEnt. The drought was estimated using remote sensing. The resulting model gained an AUC of 0.804, confirming that I. fagifer can adapt to low rainfall and has the potential to inhabit areas with drought. Bantul, Sleman, and Kulonprogo were districts where the I. fagifer potential distribution areas exceeded almost five to seven times the drought areas. This information can be used as a baseline and recommendation from village to district levels to start to mainstream and disseminate the planting of tropical native trees as a nature-based solution to cope with the drought hazards across Yogyakarta's landscape.

Abstract

This study aims to formulate development strategies for nature- and culture-based tourism in Buantan Lestari Village, Bunga Raya District, Siak Regency, Riau Province. Buantan Lestari Village possesses considerable natural resources and local wisdom; however, its tourism management has not yet been implemented optimally. This research employs a quantitative approach with a descriptive research design. Data were collected through the distribution of closed-ended questionnaires using a Likert scale to the residents of Buantan Lestari Village. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis and further examined through SWOT analysis by constructing the Internal Factor Analysis Summary (IFAS) and External Factor Analysis Summary (EFAS) matrices to determine the strategic position of tourism development. The results indicate that Buantan Lestari Village is positioned in the Weakness–Opportunity (WO) quadrant, suggesting the presence of significant external opportunities alongside various internal weaknesses. The main weaknesses identified include limited tourism facilities, low levels of community participation, minimal utilization of digital media for tourism promotion, and inadequate human resource capacity in the tourism sector. Based on this strategic position, the recommended strategy is a turn-around strategy, which focuses on overcoming internal weaknesses by leveraging available external opportunities. This strategy includes improving the quality of tourism supporting facilities, establishing and strengthening Tourism Awareness Groups (Kelompok Sadar Wisata/Pokdarwis), developing educational tourism packages based on local natural and cultural potentials, and optimizing digital promotion by involving the younger generation. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a reference for local governments and communities in formulating policies and programs for sustainable village tourism development and in contributing to the improvement of community welfare.
