Abstract

Pulai leaves (Alstonia scholaris) are known to contain various secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, so the choice of extraction method is a factor that affects the quality and quantity of bioactive compounds produced. This study aims to compare the total flavonoid content and antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts of pulai leaves obtained through two different extraction methods, namely maceration and reflux. This study is a laboratory experimental study using 96% ethanol solvent in both extraction methods. The flavonoid content was determined quantitatively using UV-Vis spectrophotometry with quercetin as the standard. The antioxidant activity test was performed using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) method based on the IC50 value. The results showed that the extract obtained using the reflux method had a higher flavonoid content of 17.11±0.03 mgQE/g and an IC50 value of 7.84±0.02 ppm, while the maceration method produced a flavonoid content of 8.42±0.02 mgQE/g and an IC50 value of 12.53±0.17 ppm. As a positive control, vitamin C had an IC50 value of 5.26±0.08 ppm. Based on these results, the extraction of pulai leaves (Alstonia scholaris) using the reflux method proved to be more effective in extracting flavonoid compounds and had higher antioxidant activity compared to the maceration method.

Abstract

One of the main causes of maternal and infant mortality in Indonesia is infection. Infection in the mother can occur due to premature rupture of membranes which can increase the risk of infection. Neonatal sepsis can cause leukocytosis (an increase in the number of white blood cells or leukocytes) in infants, which is an indicator of infection in response to bacterial infection in the body. This study aims to determine the relationship between premature rupture of membranes and the incidence of leukocytosis in newborns during Caesarean section delivery. This study is an observational analytical study with a retrospective approach. The data collected were secondary data from patient medical records from January to December 2024. Respondents were taken using a total sampling technique of 75 respondents, the test used was the Chi Square Test. The analysis results obtained a p value = 0.006, <α = 0.05 which indicates a significant relationship between premature rupture of membranes and the incidence of leukocytosis in newborns during Caesarean section delivery. A POR of 6.061 indicates that mothers who experience premature rupture of membranes during a Caesarean section have a six-fold higher risk of leukocytosis in their babies. Improving antenatal care and education for pregnant women is essential to reduce the incidence of infection in both mothers and babies.

Abstract

Coronavirus is a cause of infectious diseases. The European Food Safety Association (EFSA), on March 9, 2020, explained that there is no evidence yet to show that food is part of the coronavirus transmission route (of course, when we consume food in the right and clean way standard). Basic Health Research conducted by the Ministry of Health in 2018 shows that few Indonesian citizens are malnourished or suffer from diabetes. This group risks experiencing fatal health problems when attacked by the coronavirus. The aim of this health promotion is that the post-vaccination participants for COVID-19 in the D3 Nursing Study Program, Faculty of Nursing, University of Jember, Lumajang Campus, have a better understanding of consuming healthy food after the COVID-19 vaccination. The service method uses counseling using lectures, question and answer, and demonstrations with X banner and leaflet media for participants after the COVID-19 vaccination, which was carried out on March 17, 2022, taking place at the D3 Nursing Study Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Jember, Lumajang Campus. The results of this community service activity are likely successful. This can be observed in the level of attendance and the activeness of the participants. This activity took place in an orderly and good manner without experiencing significant obstacles. The follow-up that needs to be done is to continue to provide information on healthy food after the COVID-19 vaccination, so that confusing and untrue news can be suppressed so that the people of Indonesia are free of COVID-19, especially the people of Lumajang.

Abstract

Dendrobium is one of the most commonly collected native orchid genera at the Liwa Botanical Garden, Lampung, Indonesia. In its conservation efforts, the identification of native orchid species through anatomical characterization is essential. The aim of this research is to identify the native Dendrobium species collection at the Liwa Botanical Garden based on stomatal anatomical characteristics and to confirm these results with previous morphological and molecular characterization. The research steps involved the collection of leaves from 19 Dendrobium accessions at the Liwa Botanical Garden, while the anatomical characterization was conducted by preparing paradermal sections to microscopically observe the stomata. The main anatomical characteristics observed included stomatal aperture width, stomatal length, stomatal width, number of stomata, stomatal density, and stomatal index. The results of the study show that, overall, the stomatal aperture width is 2.88 μm, stomatal length is 12.38 μm, stomatal width is 12.58 μm, stomatal density is 29 stomata/mm², and stomatal index is 0.061%. Phenetic analysis based on the dendrogram divided the different native Dendrobium samples into two clusters (A and B) with similarity indices of 1.60 and 0.90, and PCA values (0.170 and 0.044) were found to be greater than 0.02, indicating the contribution of each group. The PCA value of 0.170 reflects the influence of stomatal area, whereas 0.044 reflects the influence of stomatal aperture width, stomatal index, and stomatal density. The anatomical characterization results show a correlation with the identification outcomes based on morphological and molecular characteristics. Furthermore, these findings can serve as a recommendation for the identification of native orchid species and provide a basis for the conservation efforts of native Dendrobium at the Liwa Botanical Garden, Indonesia.

Abstract

Efficient use of irrigation water is essential because water availability often does not meet crop requirements. In response, compost application is a potential solution, as it improves soil structure and enhances water-retention capacity. Nevertheless, the water-binding capacity of compost varies depending on the source of animal manure. To address this, the study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of compost made from cattle, poultry, and goat manure in improving water retention in Andosol soil and supporting tomato growth as a biological indicator. The study used Andosol soil mixed with compost at application rates of 25% (500 g), 50% (1000 g), and 75% (1500 g), along with a control without compost. A two-factor completely randomized design with three replications was applied, and measured parameters included moisture content, media weight, water-holding capacity, pH, plant height, and leaf number. Results showed that the treatment using 1500 g of goat manure compost combined with 500 g of Andosol soil produced the highest water-holding capacity, making it the most effective option for irrigation water conservation. In contrast, cattle manure compost yielded the best tomato growth and productivity. Overall, these findings demonstrate that selecting the appropriate manure-based compost can enhance soil water retention and improve irrigation efficiency.
