Abstract

Abstract

Research on renewable energy has become an interesting topic in the era towards industry 5.0. This was because the world's energy needs continue to increase every year, especially during the industrial revolution. The use of biodiesel as an alternative fuel began to be developed along with the emergence of policies for adding biofuels to fossil fuels. Kepuh oil has the opportunity to be developed as an alternative fuel as biodiesel feedstock. This was because kepuh oil contains triglycerides. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of catalyst concentration on density, viscosity and heating value. The catalyst used to produce biodiesel was KOH. The concentration of the catalyst used was K-0.8%; K-0.9%; K-1.0%; K-1.1% and K-1.2%. Biodiesel production was carried out at atemperature of 600C for 1 hour in the esterification and transesterification processes at the same temperature and time. The best production of kepuh biodiesel was obtained at acatalyst concentration of K-0.8% with a density value of 0.83 gr/ml, a viscosity of 2.8 cstand a heating value of 9,847 cal/gr, while the best results were obtained from mixing purediesel with kepuh biodiesel at a catalyst concentration K-0.8%. The test resulted in adensity value of 0.82 gr/ml, a viscosity of 2.24 cst, and a heating value of 10,658 cal/gr. Thehighest yield was 77.3% at 1.2% catalyst concentration

Abstract

The increasing global energy demand encourages the use of sustainable alternative fuels with combustion performance equivalent to petrodiesel. This study focuses on the droplet combustion characteristics of petrodiesel and biodiesel kesambi blends (B0, B10, B20, B30 B40 and B100), both without and with the addition of 100 ppm TiO₂ nanoparticle catalyst. Analysis was carried out on ignition delay, combustion duration, flame height, peak temperature, and flame visualization patterns. The results show that increasing the biodiesel fraction tends to prolong the combustion time and decrease the peak temperature, while the addition of TiO₂ provides significant improvements in the form of shorter ignition delay, higher peak temperature, and more stable flame. The novelty of this study lies in the use of a droplet approach to explore the role of TiO₂ catalyst in kesambi biodiesel, which is still limited in the literature. Thus, nanoparticle catalysts are proven to have great potential in increasing the efficiency and sustainability of the use of biodiesel–petrodiesel blends.

Abstract

Dependence on fossil fuels causes significant environmental damage and increases costs and scarcity in the future. To overcome this problem, a transition to renewable energy is needed, one of which is biodiesel which can be obtained from used cooking oil. This study aims to convert used cooking oil that cannot be reused into biodiesel products. Biodiesel synthesis can be carried out by the transesterification process, using NaOH catalyst with concentration variations of 0.5%, 0.75%, 1%, 1.25%, and 1.5% of the total mass of oil. The test parameters are calorific value, density, viscosity and flash point as well as yield on used cooking oil biodiesel products. The test results show that the use of a catalyst concentration of 1% produces more optimal density, viscosity, and calorific value and flash point. Each value is 0.859 g / cm³, 2.34 cSt, 10,356 cal / g, and 139°C. However, the use of a catalyst concentration of 0.5% shows that the biodiesel product is less than optimal. This can be shown by the highest density, viscosity and flash point values of the catalyst concentration variations used. Each value is 0.88 g/cm3, 3.16 cSt and 178°C, while the calorific value is also low with a value of 9,689 cal/g. However, when viewed from the yield, the catalyst concentration of 0.5% produces the highest value of all catalyst concentration variations used with a value of 88%.
