Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of education in supporting women's empowerment in rural Aceh, understand the challenges they face, and see how education can be a tool to strengthen their position in the social structure without bumping up against traditional and religious values. Through a qualitative approach, this study explores the main factors that influence women's access to and participation in formal and non-formal education, including socio-cultural and economic barriers. This conceptual model identifies key components such as the role of local educational institutions, local values (such as mutual cooperation and religious teachings), and community and family support in improving access to education for women. The findings show that education has an optimal impact on women's involvement in social and economic life, allowing them to play a greater role outside the domestic sphere. However, various challenges such as conservative views and the lack of inclusive policies are still obstacles. With the existence of supportive policies and the integration of local values in education, it is hoped that women's empowerment in Aceh can be realized sustainably. This study is expected to contribute to the formulation of more inclusive education policies for women in rural Aceh.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to determine the mystical dimensions of the pajonjong bagas ceremony, a series of rituals in building a new house, as part of the culture of the Batak Angkola community. In this traditional ceremony, several rituals contain mystical elements, to influence the beliefs of Ahlu Sunnah wal Jama'ah. Based on the qualitative study, an ethnographic approach was employed, with data obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation of the entire pajonjong bagas ceremonial processes in the Batang Angkola sub-district, South Tapanuli. The results showed that the pajonjong bagas encompassed a high philosophical value and were highly beneficial for the community, specifically for those establishing new houses and still deeply rooted in local traditions or wisdom. However, several elements of the rituals were not explicitly studied or significant in the teachings of Islam. Various symbols were also used in the ceremony, such as coconut, sugarcane and palm sugar, chayote, and banana symbolizing usefulness, sweet speech actualization, continuity, and coolness. All these symbols were assembled and hung on the rabung bukkulan, a wooden structure used as a framework. This cultural accommodation was subsequently associated with local and Sufi mysticism.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the development of Islamic religious education in Aceh. This qualitative research uses literature review to collect data. The data obtained is analyzed, verified and presented. Research findings show that the early Islamic educational institutions in Aceh were a transformation of the Hindu era education system where the learning media did not experience significant changes. The first recorded Islamic educational institution in Aceh was Zawiyah Cot Kala in Aramiyah, Bayeun, East Aceh which was under the Peureulak Sultanate. Next Dayah Blang Pria in Samudra Pasai. Then Jami'ah Baiturrahman and Dayah Syiah Kuala during the Aceh Darussalam Sultanate. Entering the modern period, Islamic religious education is carried out by various Islamic organizations such as Madrasah Khairiyah by Tuanku Raja Keumala, Madrasah Sa'adah Abadiyah by Daud Beureueh and Abdullah Ujong Rimba, Madrasah Ahlussunnah Waljamaah by Sayyid Husain Syihab, Al-Islam College by Teungku Abdurrahman Seulimum, Jamiah Al-Muslim by Teungku Abdurrahman Meunasah Meucap, and the Normal Islamic Institute. After independence, there were several modern educational institutions such as Madrasah Ulumul Qur'an (MUQ) Langsa, Islamic Boarding School Darul Faqih Qur'ani, Islamic Boarding School Insyafuddin, Islamic Boarding School Jeumala Amal, and several other educational institutions. All these modern educational institutions mutually improve the quality of religious learning as well as general science learning.
