Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the effect of Cooperative and Integrated Reading and Composition Strategy toward student reading comprehension at tenth grade students of Vocational High School 1 Muaro Jambi. Th research design in this research was quantitative research design with experimental research approach. The population of this research was tenth grade student and the sample were class XTKJ 1 and XTKJ 2 with simple random technique. The research instrument was test with multiple choice test. The data collection was pre-test, treatment and post-test. The data analysis in this research by using ttest formula. The result of the research was found that the students’ ability in reading comprehension in experimental class got mean score 43,85 in pre-test with the maximum score 55 and the minimum score was 30. While in post-test the students got mean 70,14 with the maximum score 60 and the minimum score 85. Then, in control class the students got mean 46,42 in pre-test with the maximum score 55 and the minimum score was 30. While in post-test the students got mean 76,00 with the maximum score 65 and the minimum score was 55. Based on the statistical computation t–test was found that the coefficient of observation = 2,270, where the coefficient of t-table = 1,995. It means that there was significant effect of using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) technique. It was indicated that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. In addition, there is effect of using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) technique towards student reading comprehension mastery

Abstract

AbstractThis study aim to find how the teacher’s questioning strategies enhance students’ concentration at X grade SMA PGRI 2 Jambi academic year 2017/2018. The design of this research is experimental design type one group pretest and posttest design, ie only take one experiment class without control class or comparator class. Subjects in this study were students X IPS 3 which amounted to 35 peoples and an English teacher who teaches class X IPS 3 SMA PGRI 2 Jambi. While the object in this study is the concentration of students before and after treatment. To find out the concentration of students, the students' behavior was observed at the pretest and posttest. Then the data that has been collected will be analyzed statistically descriptive, after that interpreted quantitative by comparing the result before given treatment and after given treatment. The data will tested with Mann-Whitney U Test formula to make the conclusion.From this study found that the increased concentration of students after treatment. Before being given treatment, the concentration of students was 35.5% and after being given treatment the concentration of students increased to 62.55%. And the statistic result of Mann-Whitney U Test the hypotesis is accepted.Keywords: Teacher’s Questioning Strategies, Students’ Concentration, English Class

Abstract

This study focuses on the students’ ability in writing analytical exposition texts in second grade at SMAN 8 Jambi City in the academic year 2020/2021. This study aims to determine the students ability in writing analytical exposition text in terms of the structure of the analytical itself, namely Thesis, Argument, and Reiteration. The purpose of this research is to see the students’ ability in writing analytical exposition text. This research was conducted at SMAN 8 Jambi City. This research used a descriptive qualitative method by taking the sample used simple random sampling and then obtained XI IPS 2 with the total number of 36 students as subject of the research. The instrument used is writing test based on the topic that has been determined by this research. In this study this research used an assessment rubric adapted from the Hamp-Lyons theory used by a team of assessors who are experts in the field of writing. The result of this study showed the students’ ability in writing analytical exposition text were: 6 students get very good criteria, 14 students get good criteria, 10 students get adequate criteria, and 6 students get poor criteria. This means, most of the XI IPS 2 at SMA N 8 Jambi City students got “good” criteria in writing Analytical Exposition Text. Therefore, students have to pay attention to their writing skills and all criteria that must be met to make good writing.Key Words: Analytical exposition, Writing test, Writing ability.

Abstract

This research was done using a film ‘Inside Out’ to developing students writing skills of recount text for the tenth grade students of SMA N 8 Jambi. In order to achieve the objective of this research, the writer designed an experimental research and chose pre-test post-test design with two treatments for this study. the result of the data analysis of the reflection scores for pre-test and post-test showed the increasing mean 52,8 and 73. The finding clearly revealed that a film ‘Inside Out’ as a media was effective enough in helping class X IPA 1 Students of SMAN 8 Jambi to develop recount text writing. Based on the finding, the writer assumes that movie may be used as one of alternative medium in the teaching of recount writing. Keywords: Writing, Recount Text

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to find out the difficulties of students seventh semester has difficult in teaching while following the practical field of experience program during Pandemic Covid-19. The research methodology of this study was a qualitative research design, and a phenomenology approach with technic data collection using purposive sampling. The total of respondent that allowed of this research is six students. The respondent are students at seventh semester in English education department that had been done the practical field of experience program during Pandemic Covid-19. The result of the research that a half of students seventh semester got difficulties in ability and stress when teaching in class. The student difficulties in teaching are teaching model, teaching material, time in teaching and stress in teaching means psychology students feel when did the practical field of experience. There were 4 of 6 students at seventh semester considered that time in teaching while did PPL program was very short and ineffective for explaining the material in class. Then, there were 3 of 6 students at seventh semester had felt afraid, shock, nervous or consume when taught at first time. The cause of the students’ difficulties in teaching while doing PPL program during Pandemic Covid-19 are the lack of students at seventh in discipline students at school while learning process, they depended used application that expensive in cost internet data, they felt disappointed cause not gave the best performance in English learning process in class that they had studied while in university.Keywords: The Field of Experience Program, Students Difficulties in Teaching.

Abstract

Literature is very complex phenomenon because it described about society life, and it is an expression of an author from their creative imaginations. Prose is ordinary language that people use in writing such as poetry, stories, editorials, books, and etcetera. Frankenstein is novel creation Mary Shelley; it was published on March 11, 1818. This novel tells about Doctor Victor Frankenstein as main character Victor Frankenstein wants to create the perfect creature by combining science and magic. Researcher though content analysis is the correct optional to analyze Moral Values on Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The method that researcher used in this research is qualitative content analysis. Researcher result findings about moral values in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley includes (1) Bravery, (2) Enthusiasm, (3) Kindhearted, (4) Love and Affection, (5) Loyalty, (6) Perseverance, and (7) Sincerity. For the next researcher, are expected by study the moral values in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley can inspire similar advanced research, such as Moral Philosophy in the novel Frankenstein, or the ideology of the author in novel Frankenstein.Keywords: Moral Values, “Frankenstein” novel

Abstract

Abstract Curriculum is undoubtedly and inseparable part of education. The newly introduced and implemented one is called Curriculum 2013. Involving a “scientific approach”, this curriculum is expected to answer both the needs and the challenges to improve the quality of education in Indonesia.The teacher’s role is very necessary in the success of Curriculum 2013 implementation. If the teacher implements it well, the students with real good quality will be created as the objectives of Curriculum 2013. The objective of this study is to know the implementation of Curriculum 2013 by the English teachers in teaching learning planning, teaching learning process, and learning evaluation. The research used descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through questionnaire and interview. Subject of this research were five English teachers. The research shows that the English teachers in SMA N 3 Kota Jambi have implemented the teaching learning planning especially in the arrangement of lesson plan and refers to the syllabus in accordance with the Curriculum 2013 despite some obstacles that they found. The teachers have implemented teaching learning process in accordance with the Curriculum 2013 development which included in pre-activity, main activity and post activity during the teaching and learning process. In learning evaluation, the English teachers performedquite well in accordance with Curriculum 2013. Nevertheless, some teachers find obstacles in the scoring criteria.Key Words: Implementation, Curriculum 2013, English language teaching and learning, English teachers

Abstract

This study analyzed the use of short movies on student motivation at SMKN 1 Jambi. This study aims to determine the effect of short films on the motivation to learn English in grade I SMKN 1 Jambi. After conducting the interview, the data analyzed by using a phenomenology research design with the use of qualitative research. The usage of the qualitative is used to know about the use of short movie on student motivation in SMKN 1 Jambi. This study can be concluded from 6 students. From the interview results, it is known that the use of short movies in learning English can facilitate the learning process. So it can be seen that the use of short movies can greatly influence students’ motivation.Key Words: Short Movie, Motivation, Learning English.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out whether there was any significant effect of prediction strategy toward students’ reading comprehension for the tenth grade students at SMAN 8 Muaro Jambi. The research methodology of this study was true-experimental research which involved experimental class and control class. The total population of this research was the tenth grade students of SMAN 8 Muaro Jambi, which consisted of 225 students. The researcher used 2 classes as the sample of this study. These 2 classes were divided into experimental and control class. There were 28 students at experimental class (X Science 1) and 29 students at control class (X Science 2). In collecting the data, the researcher gave pre-test, treatment, and post-test to both classes. The formula used to analyze the data was t-test. The researcher found that the pre-test mean of experimental class was 60,35 and post-test was 83,57. Meanwhile, the pre-test mean of control class was 55,51 and post-test was 68,96. Furthermore, the researcher discovered that tobservation was 11,63, whereas the ttable was 2,004 for a = 0,025. This data showed that tobservation was higher than the ttable (11,63>2,004), so, was accepted and was rejected. As a result, there was any significant effect of prediction strategy toward students’ reading comprehension for the tenth grade students at SMAN 8 Muaro Jambi.Key Words: Prediction Strategy, Reading, Students’ Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether there is any influence of probing-prompting learning model towards reading comprehension of English students at the eleventh grade of Senior High School No. 1 Jambi City. This type of research is a quasi-experimental with a total population of 347 people. Through simple random sampling technique, 34 students of Class XI IPS 2 were selected as the control class and 36 students of Class XI IPS 3 were selected as the experimental class. The technique of collecting data is by distributing questions to research respondents. In this research, the data analysis technique was using the t test on the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows version 25 program. The results of this research indicate that (1) students’ reading comprehension in English subject taught using the probing-prompting learning model obtained an arithmetic mean of 75.89; (2) students’ reading comprehension in English subject taught using the lecture-based learning model obtained an arithmetic mean of 69.24; and (3) students’ reading comprehension in English subject taught using the probing-prompting learning model are higher than students’ reading comprehension in English subject taught using lecture-based learning model with a value of Sig. 0.000 > 0.05. Furthermore, there is an influence on the use of the probing- prompting learning model towards students’ reading comprehension as evidenced by the increase in students’ learning outcomes.Keywords: Probing-Prompting Learning Model, Reading Comprehension
