Abstract

Cinnamon leaves contain active compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids which have antioxidant properties and play a role in lipid metabolism processes. This active substance is known to reduce liver fat levels and has the potential to increase the immune response in catfish. This research aims to determine the effect of adding cinnamon leaf extract to feed on liver fat levels and the health of catfish. Cinnamon leaf extract was added to the feed at five different doses, namely 0 g/kg (control), 0.5 g/kg, 1 g/kg, 2 g/kg, and 4 g/kg feed. The results of the study showed that the addition of cinnamon leaf extract to the feed reduced the fat content in the liver of catfish as seen from the decrease in fat degeneration in the liver of catfish compared to the control. Total erythrocytes, hemoglobin levels and hematocrit levels of fish treated with the addition of cinnamon leaf extract to the feed were lower and significantly different (P<0.05) compared to controls, but total leukocytes were not significantly different between treatment and control.

Abstract

Feed in aquaculture production is the largest production factor. Dependence on imported feed raw materials is the cause of high feed prices in fish farmers. One approach that can be done as a solution is the utilization of local raw materials, namely I. zollingeriana leaf flour fermented with sheep rumen fluid. This study aims to evaluate the use of fermented I. zollingeriana leaf meal (TDI) in feed as a substitute for soybean meal on the growth performance of catfish (L. hoevenii) fry. This study was conducted from December 2016 to June 2017. The research was conducted at the Wet Laboratory and Nutrition Laboratory of the Center for Freshwater Aquaculture Research and Fisheries Extension (BRBATPP), Bogor. This study consisted of four treatments and three replicates, namely the use of fermented amount of I. zollingeriana leaf meal (TDI) in feed as much as 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% made in isoprotein. The test fish used were jelawat fish that weighed 0.93 ± 0.02 g with a stocking density of 25 fish per aquarium. The container used was a 60x40x40 cm3 aquarium filled with water and equipped with 24-hour aeration. The results showed that the use of fermented I. zollingeriana leaf meal in feed up to 30% was significantly different from the control (0%) in several parameters including protein efficiency ratio, protein retention, fat retention, final weight, specific growth rate and feed efficiency, but not significantly different in the amount of feed consumption, hepatosomatic index and survival rate. The use of fermented I. zollingeriana leaf meal up to 20% showed results that were not significantly different from the control. Up to 20% fermented I. zollingeriana leaf meal can be used in tilapia (L. hoevenii) feed

Abstract

This research was motivated by the ecological importance of mangrove ecosystems as natural habitats for mud crabs (Scylla spp.) and the suspected influence of mangrove density on the population of associated biota in the Mangrove Ecotourism Area of Pantai Kelapa, Tungkal I Village, West Tanjung Jabung. The main objectives of this study were to identify the types and density of mangroves, determine the species and density of mud crabs, analyze the relationship between mangrove density and mud crab density, and assess sediment composition. A descriptive analytical method was employed, using both primary and secondary data collection. The results revealed four species of mangroves (Sonneratia alba, Avicennia alba, Rhizophora mucronata, and Nypa fruticans) with total tree-level densities ranging from 366.66 to 766 individuals per hectare. Two species of mud crabs were identified (Scylla serrata and Scylla tranquebarica), with densities ranging from 200 to 566 individuals per hectare. The highest mud crab density was recorded at station 3, which also had the highest mangrove density. A simple linear regression analysis showed an R² value of 0.3226, indicating a weak correlation. These findings suggest that mangrove density has a limited and statistically insignificant influence on the density of mud crabs in the study area.

Abstract

The structure of the plant community significantly influences the equilibrium of the surrounding environment, affecting the trophic interactions within its ecosystem. The investigation of mangrove vegetation in Cut Mamplam village was carried out in September 2021 to determine the condition and structural characteristics of the mangrove ecosystem by multivariate analysis. The mangrove vegetation in Cut Mamplam Village was sampled at three observation stations by establishing a transect parallel to the coast. Subsequently, the community structure was examined and assessed using cluster analysis and nonmetric multidimensional scaling using the PRIMER v7 software. The study findings indicate that the mangrove forest vegetation in Cut Mamplam Village consists of five species from three families. Avicennia alba, A. lanata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora mucronata and Sonneratia alba. The highest density of mangrove vegetation was observed in A. alba in all categories: trees (616.67 ind/ha), seedlings (833.33 ind/ha) and saplings (66666.67 ind/ha). Additionally, the highest important value index (IVI) was recorded in A. alba for all categories: trees (232.16%), seedlings (102.40%), and saplings (228.43%). A similarity of mangrove density between species was noted at 60%, resulting in the formation of two distinct groups. Regarding the basal area, the vegetation stands of A. alba and A. lanata exhibited the highest values (280.61 and 266.03 m2/ha, respectively). The similarity of basal area among the observed species was 20%, resulting in the formation of two distinct groups. Additionally, Station II, classified as having mature vegetation, demonstrated a maturity similarity of 80% between observation stations.
