Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve feed quality and performance of catfish cultivation in “Karya Mandiri” business partners through the application of Probio_FM probiotic fish pellets. The activity was carried out in four stages: (1)preparation, including discussions with partners to identify feed production conditions, raw materials, mixing techniques, drying methods, as well as socialization of probiotic concepts; (2) making probiotic pellets, including mixing local raw materials, UV-based drying and adding Probio_FM at a dose of 10 mL/kg of feed; (3) feeding and maintaining fish at a density of 40 fish/m² for 30 days, feeding twice a day ad satiation, and sampling growth every 10 days; and (4) monitoring and evaluation of fish growth. The results showed that fish fed Probio_FM experienced higher growth in length and weight compared to treatments without probiotics. On the 30th day, the average length of fish with probiotics reached 12.95 cm and a weight of 23.03 g, compared to only 12.43 cm and 20.35 g for fish without probiotics. This indicates that probiotics improve feed efficiency, nutrient absorption, and overall fish health. Probio_FM supports growth by improving gut microflora, increasing digestive enzyme activity, controlling pathogenic bacteria, and increasing disease resistance. Furthermore, the use of probiotics contributes to sustainable cultivation by reducing organic waste and improving pond environmental quality. The results of this community service program confirm that Probio_FM probiotic feed into catfish cultivation has the potential to increase productivity, feed efficiency, and environmentally friendly cultivation practices, while also providing economic benefits to business partners

Abstract

This study aims to determine the spawning techniques of Leptobarbus hoevenii fish at the Sungai Gelam Freshwater Aquaculture Center (BPBAT). Activities include maintaining prospective broodstock, selecting mature broodstock, injecting ovulation hormones, and the spawning process, stripping, egg handling, water quality monitoring to highlight its importance, and embryo development. Ovaprim hormone injections were administered to the female broodstock four times and once to the male broodstock to stimulate ovulation. The stripping process was carried out after ovulation and was followed by dry mixing of eggs and sperm before being spread into the hatching tank. The results showed a fertilization rate of 63,08% and a hatching rate of 9,73%, which were influenced by gamete quality and the physiological condition of the broodstock. Observations of embryogenesis showed developmental stages ranging from morula, blastula, gastrula, to organogenesis before the eggs hatch into larvae. Water quality parameters during the study were in the optimal range for spawning, namely pH 7,24–7,77, temperature 27–30,5°C, and DO 3,53–5,58 mg/L. The results of this study explain that the success of Hoven’s carp fish seeding is highly dependent on the readiness of the broodstock, the application of artificial spawning techniques, and good water quality management.

Abstract

Saline tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) culture is a strategic option for utilizing brackish coastal waters. This study aimed to evaluate natural hatchery techniques, identify success factors, and provide recommendations to improve productivity. Conducted from July to September 2025 at the Marine and Brackish Water Fisheries Center, Teluk Buo (Padang), the study used direct and participatory observation. Data included fecundity, feed consumption, fry survival, and water quality. Spawning was carried out naturally with a 1:3 male-to-female ratio at 17–18 ppt salinity. Results showed high fecundity (3,500 eggs per female) and fry survival rate of 83%. Daily feed consumption was 1.2 kg for 80 broodstock. Water quality remained optimal (pH 7, temperature 28–30°C, salinity 17–18 ppt, DO >5 mg/L). Hatchery success was influenced by broodstock quality, high-protein feed, water management, and biosecurity. These findings can support the development of saline tilapia hatchery in coastal Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

apiat (Barbonymus schwanefeldii) is one of the economically important freshwater fish found in the Muaro Pijoan River, Jambi. Intensive fishing pressure and water quality degradation due to anthropogenic activities pose threats to the sustainability of this fish population. This study aims to examine the size distribution and growth patterns of kapiat in the Muaro Pijoan River as a scientific basis for development of freshwater aquaculture. Sampling was conducted in October 2025 using traps and gillnets. A total of 83 kapiat were collected, consisting of 51 males and 32 females. Male fish had a total length range of 110–160 mm with a weight range of 20–55 g, while female fish had a total length range of 120–166 mm with a weight range of 21–71 g. The size distribution of male fish was dominated by the 134–141 mm size class (25 individuals), while female fish were dominated by the 156–164 mm size class (13 individuals). Length-weight relationship analysis showed that male fish exhibited a negative allometric growth pattern (b = 2.6399; R² = 0.7313), indicating that length growth was faster than weight gain. In contrast, female fish exhibited a positive allometric growth pattern (b = 3.4445; R² = 0.8998), indicating that weight gain was faster than length growth due to the gonadal maturation process. The relatively smaller size distribution compared to other populations suggests environmental influence on growth performance. These results provide baseline information for domestication strategies, broodstock selection, and feeding management in freshwater aquaculture systems

Abstract

Abstract

The production of quality catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus fry requires good broodstock with optimal fecundity and ovulation levels. This study aims to evaluate the fecundity and ovulation levels of Pustina strain catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) broodstock at the Freshwater Aquaculture Center (BPBAT) Sungai Gelam Jambi. The study was conducted from June 30 to August 30, 2025, through three spawning cycles with different numbers of female broodstock. The research method used Ovaprim hormone induction at a dose of 0.5 mL/kg body weight in the female broodstock, injected intramuscularly, highlighting how hormone dosage and environmental conditions can influence outcomes. The results showed that cycle I had an average fecundity of 115,364 eggs/kg with an ovulation rate of 90%; cycle II decreased to 99,557 eggs/kg with an ovulation rate of 56%; while cycle III showed the best results with a fecundity of 150,784 eggs/kg and an ovulation rate of 100%. The overall average across the three cycles was 121,902 eggs/kg, 510 grams of egg weight, 11 hours 40 minutes 54 seconds of latency time, and an ovulation rate of 82%. The fertilization rate (FR) reached 70%, the hatching rate (HR) was 19.17%. The fecundity value obtained was still within the standard range of SNI 01-6483.1-2000, which is 120,000–200,000 eggs/kg of broodstock. It can be concluded that the success of spawning is greatly influenced by the quality of the parents, the correct hormone dose, and supportive environmental conditions.
