Abstract

This research uses Abraham Maslow's (1954) humanistic theory to examine Tom's struggle for love in the movie "500 Days of Summer" from a personal psychology standpoint. The study looks into how Tom's emotional journey, interpersonal relationships, and romantic problems are portrayed in the film. The analysis looks at significant conversations, scenes, and psychological facets of Tom's character using a qualitative methodology. The findings show that Maslow's hierarchy of requirements, which places a strong emphasis on social connection and self-actualization, is in line with Tom's struggle for love. The impact of Tom's romantic struggles on day-to-day living is also covered in the study, eliciting thoughtful comments on interpersonal connections, perspectives on love, and emotional fortitude. All things considered, "500 Days of Summer" provides not just a sophisticated love tale but also a window into the protagonist's emotional and psychological development.

Abstract

This study explores Osamu Dazai's defense mechanisms as depicted in the film adaptation of No Longer Human (2019) from a psychoanalytic perspective, drawing on Sigmund Freud's theoretical framework. The narrative follows the protagonist's tumultuous journey, highlighting his struggles with identity, alienation, and social conformity. Using Freud's psychoanalytic concepts, including defense mechanisms such as denial, projection, displacement, sublimation, reaction formation, undoing, and isolation, this study examines the protagonist's psychological responses to trauma and guilt. Employing Miles and Huberman’s method of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, the research conducts a close analysis of character behavior, dialogue, and symbolism. The film's depiction of these defense mechanisms offers profound insights into the human psyche and its coping strategies in the face of internal and external conflict. By integrating Freudian theory with cinematic interpretation, this study aims to elucidate the intricacies of Dazai's defense mechanisms and provide a deeper understanding of the complexity of human psychology as portrayed in the film.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the indicators of ambition for fame, how ambition is reflected, and why ambition for fame is reflected in Black Swan, a movie directed by Darren Aronofsky. The analysis of the ambition for fame in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan movie is the research problem. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. To analyze the data, the researcher used Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory. The data was collected by taking notes and doing library research. The theory posits three fundamental concepts: the Id, Ego, and Superego. The result shows that Nina Sayer's id is subconsciously driven by a deep desire for perfection in the ballet world and her ambition to become a swan queen. The Ego can be seen in Nina, who tries to fulfill her strong desires with many demands from her mother. The Superego can be seen in that Nina is under pressure from her mom, so she feels depressed. So it can be concluded that the ambition for fame in Black Swan movie can be reflected in Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory.

Abstract

The present study is anchored in the notion that the formation of human identity is inextricably linked to social interaction and the impact of trauma. The film Cruella (2021) has been selected as a case study, as it exemplifies the intricate transformation of the protagonist's identity (Estella to Cruella) through the medium of fashion, expression, and psychosocial dynamics. The objective of the present research is twofold: firstly, to analyse the factors that trigger identity transformation, and secondly, to describe the process of change in the film. The methodological approach adopted is qualitative, incorporating document analysis techniques (e.g., film observation, dialogue transcription, and key scene screenshots). These techniques are then analysed through dialogue segmentation, interpretation of transformation themes, and contextualisation of Erikson's psychosocial development theory. The results of the study indicate the following: (1) The factors that precipitate transformation include the trauma of the mother's death and the Baroness' betrayal as external catalysts, as well as the repression of the dark side (shadow) as an internal driver; (2) The process of change is visualised in three phases: persona formation (the good and obedient false identity of "Estella"), shadow eruption (the aggressive and vengeful identity of "Cruella"), and self-integration (self-realisation) through the acceptance of dual identity.
