Abstract

Bilingual education in Indonesia increasingly emphasizes both linguistic competence and character development, yet limited research examines how international pedagogical models can be adapted to local contexts. This qualitative case study investigates the implementation of empathy-based teaching approaches inspired by the film Freedom Writers (2007) in three bilingual schools in Surakarta, Indonesia. Data were collected over 2 months (October - November 2025) through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and student reflections. Thematic analysis revealed five key outcomes: transformed classroom atmospheres fostering student voice, enhanced language proficiency through reflective writing, strengthened critical thinking via culturally relevant curriculum, and improved socio-emotional competencies. Despite challenges including time constraints and cultural adaptation needs, findings demonstrate that empathetic, student-centered pedagogy significantly enhances both academic and character outcomes in bilingual settings. This study contributes empirical evidence for integrating transformative pedagogical approaches within Indonesian educational contexts while respecting local values and bilingual learning objectives.

Abstract

Modern women frequently encounter challenges in their perspectives on life's struggle, such as focusing on social expectations of women, experiencing a lack of spiritual support in relationships, and facing a disconnection between education, job, and marriage, which hinders their pursuit of an ideal partnership. This research examines the life of education, marriage experiences, ideas, and inspirations of Jo March in the movie "Little Women" to face the challenges of women in their views on life. The data was collected from two sources the movie Little Women (2019) and other sources of literature. The result revealed that the feminist thought of life struggle found in several aspects, such as the struggle for freedom, the struggle for education, and the Struggle for happiness. These struggles were fueled by the unfair treatment of women, who were subjected to a patriarchal society that taught them they were less important than men and should adhere to men's decisions. The societal expectation that women's happiness was contingent upon male support further limited their pursuit of independence. In this era, the concept of freedom seemed distant and unattainable for women, highlighting the pervasive and systemic barriers they faced.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this investigation is to explore the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English language education, focusing on teachers' perspectives on the positive and negative aspects of implementing AI in EFL classrooms; ways in which AI supports teachers' instructional practices, engages students in learning, and impacts teachers’ own pedagogical practices in addition to the ethical and professional implications of its use.Methodology: This study utilized a descriptive qualitative research methodology. The data were obtained through twelve semi-structured interviews with English language teachers working at one of the private universities in the English department in Indonesia. The participants were intentionally sampled based on their exposure to AI-supported instructional tools. The qualitative data were then analysed thematically to investigate the perceptions teachers had based on recurring themes and categories related to their experiences, challenges, and reflections about AI in education. Results: The findings indicated that AI offers remarkable advantages, including increased teaching efficiency, personalized support for learners, and heightened student motivation. However, the study identified several challenges, including limitations in teacher training, ethical implications related to data collection, technological constraints, and a potential reduction in human interaction. The findings suggest that the effectiveness of AI integration relies not only on teachers but also on administrators, policies, and ethical positions. Applications/Originality/Value: This research sheds light on the human-centered use of AI in language education. Utilizing Humanistic Learning Theory and the TPACK framework, it demonstrates how teachers can uphold empathy, authenticity, and pedagogical balance in the wake of emerging technology. These insights matter for policy design and professional development of eco-sustainable practices for using AI-enhanced instruction.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores how special education teachers (SLB) in Surakarta negotiate humanistic and personalized pedagogical approaches within increasingly standardized educational systems. Drawing on critical pedagogy theory and inclusive education frameworks, this research examines the tensions between transformative, student-centered pedagogical ideals (such as those popularized in cultural narratives like Freedom Writers) and the structural, administrative, and resource constraints faced by SLB teachers working with students with diverse disabilities. Through semi-structured interviews with five special education teachers from public SLB institutions in Surakarta, this study investigates how educators conceptualize authentic connection, individualized attention, and transformative learning for students with intellectual, sensory, and physical disabilities who often face compounded marginalization due to poverty and social stigma. The findings reveal significant gaps between pedagogical ideals and practical realities, including excessive administrative burdens, inadequate funding for adaptive materials, high student-teacher ratios, outcome-driven assessment pressures, and limited emotional support systems for teachers. This study argues that while humanistic education promises to transform marginalized students' lives, systemic barriers in Indonesian special education prevent teachers from fully realizing this vision. This research contributes to ongoing debates about inclusive education in developing contexts and offers implications for reimagining special education policy that prioritises teacher capacity, student dignity, and authentic learning over bureaucratic compliance.

Abstract

This study examines how Waheed Ahmed’s The Black Hill Syndrome (2024) allegorizes digital culture as a system of hidden domination. Drawing on Baudrillard’s theory of hyperreality and Han’s concept of psychopolitics, this study argues that both Black Hill and digital culture simulate freedom while sustaining a complex system of control. In the post-9/11 context, the novel reflects cultural anxieties around surveillance, identity, and authority. Black Hill serves as a metaphor for digital culture, as it conceals power relations behind openness and autonomy. The paper analyzes digital hegemony as a modern continuation of imperialist agendas. What is presented as free expression is in fact a carefully managed illusion that preserves capitalist structures. By examining the erasure of individuality, the suspension of time, and the unseen authority of “Mundri Wala” in Black Hill, the study demonstrates how both Black Hill and digital culture create the performance of freedom while diffusing real autonomy. This study also explores how Pakistani fiction not only reflects post-9/11 anxieties but also engages with global debates on digital control, autonomy, and resistance.

Abstract

The film Deadpool (2016) presents a distinctive form of heroism that challenges the traditional representation of superheroes as morally ideal and law-abiding figures. This study analyzes how Wade Wilson is represented as an antihero through the film's narrative structure, applying Seymour Chatman's narrative structuralism alongside Prusa's mechanisms of positioning, motivation, and charisma. Employing a qualitative structuralist approach, data were collected through repeated film observation and classification of relevant narrative elements, including character, plot, conflict, and point of view. The findings reveal that positioning operates at the discourse level as a pre-emptive focalization strategy, securing audience alignment through non-linear sequencing and fourth-wall address before story-level moral information is available; motivation is distributed across Todorov’s disruption and recognition stages as a set of causally anchored story events that ground transgression in recognizable human vulnerability; and charisma functions across both levels simultaneously, converting story-level suffering into discourse-level affective appeal through tonal dissonance and metalepsis. Rather than functioning as the co-present cluster Prusa describes, these three mechanisms appear in this film to operate as an ordered reception sequence enabled by the film's discourse-level arrangement: discourse-level positioning prepares the ground on which story-level motivation can be received sympathetically, and charisma consolidates what both have established. On the evidence of a single case we advance this ordering as a hypothesis about how the mechanisms interact, not as a demonstrated law of antihero narrative.
