Penelitian ini membahas strategi penerjemahan dan dampak strategi terhadap teks terjemahan yang dilakukan oleh sejumlah pelamar gelar Master di Sekolah Pascasarjana UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. Data yang dikumpulkan adalah sepuluh produk terjemahan, dari bahasa Inggris sampai bahasa Indonesia, dari pelamar. Teks bahasa Inggris yang diterjemahkan terdiri dari 390 kata. Mereka diizinkan menggunakan kamus tradisional atau kamus offline / elektronik saat menerjemahkan teks. Penelitian menggunakan teori strategi penerjemahan yang diusulkan oleh Jääskeläinen (1993), strategi global dan lokal, dan oleh Vinay & Dalbernet (1958 & 2000), metode terjemahan (terjemahan harfiah dan oblique) dan prosedur terjemahan (peminjaman, penerjemah kalque, terjemahan harfiah, modulasi , transposisi, kesetaraan, dan adaptasi). Temuan menunjukkan bahwa calon mahasiswa cenderung menggunakan strategi lokal dan metode literal dalam terjemahannya. Hal ini mempengaruhi kualitas terjemahan, membuatnya kurang alami dalam bahasa target. Selain itu, ada kesalahan terjemahan karena pilihan kata yang salah / salah, menyebabkan pesan dalam teks sumber gagal disampaikan. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan masukan yang berharga untuk studi dan kursus terjemahan di masa depan.

Studying abroad is no longer the dream of a handful of Indonesian students. There are a variety of accesses enabling Indonesian students to realize their goals, one of which is the opportunity for external funding or scholarships. The scholarship is a support for the students who excel, but are constrained by economic problems to live abroad. This study aimed to identify the motivation of tertiary education graduates in Aceh, in participating in the scholarships to study abroad, and the expectations they wished to achieve from these scholarships. This study was a case study, using a questionnaire in data collection. A sample of 100 people were selected randomly. INCREASING THE POTENTIAL OF DAIRY CATTLE HOUSEWIVES IN MAKING YOGHURT IN CIBIRU WETAN VILLAGE, BANDUNG REGENCY, WEST JAVA. Yogurt is the product of milk fermentation by Lactobacillus subspecies. The unique properties of yoghurt provided by its living bacteria and its nutrients have captured the interest of the community. The highest price of cow's milk in dairy farming centres of Cibiru Wetan Village, Kabupaten Bandung is purchased by the Milk Processing Industry (IPS) at around IDR 4,500 / litre. Therefore, the purpose of this community service activity was the utilization of fresh cow milk as yoghurt to increase the income of dairy cattle farmer. Yoghurt processing begins with the modification of the incoming milk composition. This process typically involves reducing the fat content and increasing the total solids in the milk by are Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. The stages of this activity began from providing an understanding of milk and dairy products and training in making yoghurt from fresh cow milk. The critical point in this activity is how to transfer knowledge and skills in preparing the starter and sterile conditions of the cooking utensils. The results of the activity showed that community participation could improve the knowledge and ability of participants in the processing of fresh cow milk as yoghurt. In conclusion, this activity could be an alternative income for dairy cattle farmer.

An issue faced by students nowadays is not knowing how to take notes effectively with certain techniques so that the results of a record or a summary simply copy the information verbatim from the existing text. The main purpose of this study is to improve the students’ ability in note taking on English texts with the Cornell format and to figure out the format’s benefits. Some important parts of the note taking process that have not been mastered by the students included finding important ideas from the text, describing and recording the conclusions of the text, rewriting ideas, and writing down bibliographic details such as names of the authors, titles of books, journals, publishers, publications, journal pages, and web addresses. This study used pre-experimental method with the one-shot case study design, taking a sample of 15 students from the Department of English Education, University of Muhammadiyah Aceh. Data were taken from the student worksheets using the Cornell format, and analyzed descriptively and compared with the scoring rubric adapted from AVID. The results showed that 60% of students were able to achieve category 2 (fair), and as many as 40% were in category 3 (good). These results showed that the Cornell note taking technique has been useful in helping the students improve their ability to take notes on the English texts. Abstrak Permasalahan yang dihadapi mahasiswa dewasa ini adalah belum mengetahui cara mencatat (note taking) informasi teks yang efektif dengan teknik tertentu sehingga hasil catatan atau ringkasan hanya menyalin ulang informasi kata per kata dari teks yang ada. Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah meningkatkan kemampuan mencatat informasi teks Bahasa Inggris dalam kegiatan menulis dengan teknik Cornell dan mengungkap manfaatnya. Beberapa bagian penting proses mencatat teks yang belum dikuasai mahasiswa termasuk menemukan ide penting dari teks, menggambarkan dan mencatat kesimpulan teks, menulis ulang ide atau gagasan, dan mencatat bibliografi secara detil seperti mencatat inisial dan nama akhir penulis, judul buku, jurnal, penerbit, tempat publikasi, halaman jurnal, alamat internet atau web. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimen dengan sampel sebanyak 15 mahasiswa dari jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh. Data diambil dari lembar kerja mahasiswa dengan format Cornell, dan dianalisis secara deskriptif dan dibandingkan dengan rubrik penilaian mencatat yang diadaptasi dari AVID. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa60% mahasiswa mampu mencapai kategori 2 (cukup), dan sebanyak 40% berada di kategori 3 (baik). Hasil tersebut memperlihatkan bahwa teknik Cornell ini bermanfaat dalam membantu mahasiswa meningkatkan kemampuannya dalam mencatat teks bahasa Inggris. Teaching English to young learners (TEYL) is different from teaching adults. Children need constant attention and assistance as well as motivating methods to keep them engaged particularly during online learning in the pandemic era these days. This study aims to investigate English teacher’s perception on teaching English vocabulary to elementary students’ by using storytelling method in a virtual environment. The study asked the following question: What is the English teacher’s perspective on teaching English using storytelling virtually during the pandemic? The study interviewed an English teacher of a private school in Bekasi, Indonesia using a semi-structured interview guide. The study found that the English teacher agreed that storytelling is beneficial to use in teaching English for young learners. In addition, the teacher mentioned that there were several issues during the online learning such as unenthusiastic students, students’ limited access to the gadgets, and students’ passive involvement during the learning. Further, in terms of teaching with storytelling, the teacher would request the students to make a video and retell stories in the textbook. This study concludes that it is paramount for English teachers to continuously provide varied teaching methods in order to solve problems faced by Indonesian elementary students during online learning.

Public Speaking is one of the courses learned by the students at universities. In this pilot study, the purpose was to investigate the students’ strategies in coping with anxiety in English Public Speaking course. Participants of the study were two junior students of English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh, Banda Aceh in Aceh Province, Indonesia. The study purposively selected them based on their gender and class engagement in the Public Speaking course in 2019/2020 academic year. The study used the qualitative method, with interview to collect the data. Findings showed that the students applied several strategies to deal with their speech anxiety, including having adequate preparation and practice and using hand and body movements when delivering a speech. This study recommends that teachers promote such strategies to other EFL students so that they can overcome their fear of public speaking.

The issue of professional English as a foreign language (EFL) lecturer in the industrial revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) era has received considerable attention. However, very few studies on this subject have been conducted in Indonesia, particularly at State Islamic Universities. To address this gap, researchers conducted a qualitative study to examine how EFL lecturers maintain their professionalism in the IR 4.0 era and the curriculum approach that best meets current teaching and learning needs. The researchers applied a purposive sampling approach in selecting the participants for this study. There were 11 EFL lecturers from a state Islamic university in Banda Aceh, Indonesia chosen to participate in this study. The findings of this study indicate that EFL lecturers must continue to learn and improve their digital and technological competency in order to maintain their professionalism. In terms of curriculum approach, EFL lecturers believe that taking an interdisciplinary approach and providing more opportunities for students to focus on applied skills are essential parts of their teaching professionalism in the IR 4.0 era.

Issues surrounding curriculum integration have been discussed worldwide. Some argue that curriculum integration contributes meaningfully to empowering students’ multi knowledge and skills, while others claim that curriculum integration has detrimental effects on teachers and students’ study load. This qualitative study investigates the English teachers’ and Islamic boarding school principals’ perceptions of integrating English subject materials of Curriculum 2013 into the Islamic boarding school curriculum context. Eleven participants (two Islamic boarding school principals and nine English teachers teaching at two Junior Islamic boarding schools in Banda Aceh) were selected purposively. The findings indicate that integrating English materials into the Islamic boarding school curriculum positively contributes to developing students’ general and Islamic-related knowledge. The results also suggest that the integration of English materials into the Islamic boarding school curriculum can be performed by switching the listed materials in the syllabus of Curriculum 2013 with the Islamic-related materials. The study unveils that among these curricula integration challenges are the inadequacy of Islamic-related knowledge that the teachers master and the subject overload. These two main issues are the main challenges to integrating the English materials into the Islamic boarding school curriculum.

Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) yang dilaksanakan di Lembaga Kesejahteraan Sosial Anak (LKSA) Rumah Penyantun Muhammadiyah, Kota Banda Aceh ini bertujuan untuk membantu para siswi mengembangkan kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa inggris. Metode pelaksanaan program dilakukan dengan menggunakan beberapa game edukasi yang menyenangkan. Program berlangsung selama delapan pertemuan pada bulan Desember 2022 dan melibatkan sejumlah remaja putri yang masih duduk di Sekolah Menengah Atas. Hasil dari program menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan game edukasi dapat menumbuhkan minat dan meningkatkan kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa inggris. Oleh karena itu, program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini memiliki manfaat yang signifikan dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa inggris para siswi SMA, serta menumbuhkan minat belajar bahasa inggris di masa yang akan datang. Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dapat menjadi salah satu solusi dalam mengatasi kendala-kendala yang dihadapi dalam pembelajaran bahasa inggris di Indonesia. Melalui partisipasi dari elemen masyarakat, pembelajaran bahasa inggris dapat menjadi lebih efektif dan menyenangkan bagi para siswi SMA.

This study examines online collaborative writing (CW) teaching techniques via asynchronous computer-mediated communication multimodality, i.e., Google Docs. This study attempts to investigate what Indonesian learners perceive concerning writing collaboratively in Google Docs during online learning. This study collected data from 20 Primary School Teacher Education (PSTE) students enrolling in an English 3 (Academic Writing) class at a private university in Indonesia. The findings showed that the participants perceived online collaborative writing as a good way to develop their writing and communication skills. It was found that feedback from peers and the teacher was considered beneficial to the learners’ writing development during the implementation of online collaborative writing (OCW). Even though interaction among learners can be enhanced in OCW, learners’ lack of participation was one of the drawbacks discovered in this study. It is hoped that this study can contribute significantly to English writing instructors considering the benefits and the drawbacks of OCW before implementing OCW in their university classrooms.
