Abstract

Environmental mitigation measures are being undertaken as a proactive approach to prevent the adverse consequences associated with Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Presently, there is a lack of comprehensive information regarding the occurrence of HABs in the waters surrounding Bintan Island, and routine monitoring to assess the potential for eutrophication is absent. This research should begin by gathering information about potential sources that contribute to the emergence of HABs, the specific types of algae with the capacity to trigger HABs The primary objective of this study is to identify the harmful algae species present in the coastal waters of Bintan Island. The research was conducted in August 2023, with the sampling process taking place at four specific locations within the coastal waters of Bintan Island. These sampling stations were selected deliberately to capture the varying activities predominant in each respective area. The microalgae found consisted of four groups, namely Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta, Dinophyta, and Chlorophyta. Bacillariophyta is a group of microalgae with the highest abundance proportion at all observation stations. Harmfull Algae found in the coastal waters of Bintan Island generally come from the Dinophyta group of the types Ceratium sp., Peridinium sp., Prorocentrum sp., and Dinophysis sp. Harmful microalgae from the Dinophyta group were found at all research stations, with the highest proportion of abundance at Station 2 (6%) and the lowest at Station 3 (1%). The difference in these findings is thought to be due to the dynamics of the hydrosanographic parameters of the waters, especially nutrient concentrations. Keywords:BintanCeratiumDinophytaHarmfulMicroalgae

Abstract

Senggarang waters are a traditional fishing spot for small-scale blue swimming crab (BSC) fishermen in Tanjungpinang City. The fishermen have their own BSC catchment areas to capture this product, which is the primary aim. Plankton, an aquatic microbe that lives floating in the water column and can't move or only move slightly to follow the current, has a high ecological significance as a source of food for fisheries biota. The purpose of this study was to monitor the existence of plankton by determining plankton abundance, diversity index, uniformity index, and plankton dominance index in crab fishermen's traditional fishing grounds in Senggarang seas. This is a quantitative study; planktons were sampled at 10.00−13.00 using the horizontal static method with a plankton net, placed in a sample bottle, and given 10% Lugol, before being identified at the Marine Biology Laboratory, Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries, Raja Ali Haji Maritime University. Samples were collected for five weeks at five locations designated by purposive sampling in the same location as the BSC fishermen who set their traps (bubu). The results revealed 41 genera of planktons classified as Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Branchiopoda, Chlorophyceae, Dinophyceae, Sarcodina, Copepods, and Tintinnidae. The largest plankton abundance occurs in the fourth week of Station 5, with 15961 ind.L−1. The plankton diversity index was low, and the uniformity index was inversely proportional to dominance. Abstract

Senggarang is one of the coastal villages in Tanjungpinang City which has a river that flows from the upstream downstream into the sea. The flow of the Senggarang river has distinctive characteristics that are commonly found in small island waters, namely having a relatively short upstream to downstream distance, and the downstream part is influenced by tidal conditions. Various activities along the Senggarang river flow would cause changes in water quality which would impact the presence of macrozoobenthic. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the macrozoobenthic community and the water quality of the Senggarang river. Macrozoobenthic sampling, and environmental parameters were carried out using random sampling methods. The results of this study were obtained 27 species from 6 phylum, namely phylum Arthropoda 13 species, phylum Ciliophora 3 species, phylum Echinodermata 1 species, phylum Mollusca 4 species, phylum Nematoda 5 species, and phylum Tardigrada 1 species. The average macrozoobenthic density is 172 ind./ m3 for freshwater and 704 ind./ m3 for brackish waters. The average diversity value for freshwater is 1.29 and 2.16 waters with medium salinity, the average uniformity value of 0.85 freshwater and 0.94 of high in brackish waters, the average dominance value of 0.32 freshwater and 0.13 of low in brackish waters. The relationship of macrozoobenthos with the quality of freshwater based on PCA analyses related to temperature and dissolved oxygen, in brackish waters to temperature, dissolved oxygen, and current. Keywords: Macrozoobenthic community, PCA, River flow, Water quality

Abstract

Benan is one of the islands located in Senayang District, Lingga Regency, Riau Islands. Most of the people on Benan Island work as sea cucumber fishermen, this is because the existence of sea cucumbers on the island is still abundant. The processing of liquid waste originating from post-harvest sea cucumbers in the form of wet sea cucumbers and dry sea cucumbers has not been carried out optimally, even though the more raw materials for sea cucumbers are prepared at the time of postharvest, the more waste generated will also be. The problem with partners is that the liquid waste originating from the post-harvest preparation of sea cucumbers has not been carried out optimally. The solution given to partners is education through socialization of liquid waste processing from the results of postharvest preparation of sea cucumbers into local microorganisms (MOL) in the Benan village field trip group, so that postharvest processing of sea cucumbers becomes zero waste. The methods in the activities carried out are discussion and socialization. The results obtained after this service is increasing public knowledge about sea cucumber wastewater treatment.
