Abstract

This article describes and explains how Culler’s (1997) poetics in the study of literature can be used to gain literary competency for the teaching of literature in an English as a foreign language (EFL) environment. The use of this strategy is discussed using one of the most famous play scripts in American literature: Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Following Culler's poetics technique, the study focuses on one of the themes present in the play script: Willy Loman's (the main character) disappointments, which make up the majority of the story with a dramatic ending: Willy's decision to commit suicide. This article seeks to persuade EFL teachers who study literature to take Culler's side and use poetics as the beginning point for a literature study in order to increase their students’ literary ability.

Abstract

The research aims at explaining some differences between sentence formation in English and Lubuklinggau dialect. Lubuklinggau dialect derives from Palembang Malay language in South Sumatera and as the first and second language in Lubuklinggau. The data was taken from two movies ‘Alternative Math’ in English and ‘Meraih Cita’ in Lubuklinggau dialect. The transcription from oral language to the written form was carried out to analyze the sentence formation in both languages. The data was analyzed by identification, coding, classification, data reduction, description and conclusion drawing. The results show that there are some concerns on the grammatical rule in sentence formation such as copular usage, verb tense, declarative word order, interrogative structure, auxiliary modal use in questions, focus structure, clause embedding and sentence-final particles. Understanding the difference structure between the two languages are expected to improve pedagogical strategies in teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Abstract

This study investigates university students’ engagement with brain rot and meme culture within digital communication environments, focusing on the pragmatic functions embedded in meme-based interactions and the extent to which meme culture shapes students’ digital discourse and communication practices. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study involved undergraduate students as participants. Data were gathered through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and pragmatic competence assessments, and subsequently analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. The findings reveal that meme culture has become deeply embedded in students’ everyday digital interactions, serving multiple pragmatic purposes in online communication. Memes function not only as tools for entertainment and social bonding but also as mechanisms for expressing attitudes, negotiating meaning, conveying humor, and facilitating contextual understanding in digital discourse. Furthermore, the results indicate that sustained exposure to meme culture significantly influences students’ communicative behavior, shaping their interpretation of messages, language use, and interactional strategies in online environments. The study concludes that memes should be viewed as more than merely recreational digital artifacts; they constitute meaningful communicative resources that support effective digital interaction and contribute to the development of pragmatic competence among university students. These findings underscore the growing significance of meme culture as a linguistic and sociocultural phenomenon in contemporary digital communication.

Abstract

Online product reviews combine numerical star ratings with written reviews to communicate consumer evaluations. While recent studies highlight frequent mismatches between textual sentiment and numerical ratings, few have examined this phenomenon qualitatively. This research investigates how linguistic sentiment aligns or diverges from star ratings to understand the pragmatic functions behind these inconsistencies. The research analyzes 120 anonymized furniture reviews collected from the IKEA Australia website. A two-stage methodology was applied: a descriptive overview classifying sentiment-rating consistency, followed by Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA) to examine linguistic richness and rating alignment. The analysis reveals four dominant evaluative patterns: Polite Dissatisfaction, Understated Positivity, Expressive Dissatisfaction, and Low-Information Reviews. Reviewers frequently employ politeness strategies, contrastive structures, and evaluative restraint, resulting in partial or complete mismatches between expressed sentiment and numerical scores. These results indicate that star ratings and written texts serve distinct communicative purposes and should be interpreted together rather than in isolation. The research contributes to qualitative sentiment analysis and digital pragmatics by demonstrating that sentiment-rating inconsistency is a deliberate pragmatic strategy rather than an analytical measurement error.
