Abstract

Tourism plays a pivotal role by substantially boosting foreign exchange, highlighting its immense significance for the region. This study is aimed at exploring the target needs concerning the communicative competencies of tenth-grade tourism students at vocational institutions in Makassar. To delineate these needs, open-ended questionnaires focusing on three specific target need dimensions were directed toward the teaching faculty. The subsequent data were meticulously processed through reduction, display, and conclusion phases. The distilled findings shed light on three cardinal facets of students' target needs: 1. Necessities: A realm encompassing pivotal skills such as speaking, listening, writing, and reading in tandem with the indispensable teaching materials. 2. Lacks: This underscores the discernible voids in students' grammar and lexical repertoire. 3. Wants: A domain where students manifest an ardent aspiration to master oral communication skills. These revelations underscore the intertwined complexities of target needs in the pedagogy of the English language. Additionally, this investigative endeavor empowers educators in Makassar's vocational institutions with a compass to navigate the intricate landscape of tourism students' requisites. Such profound insights germinate the seeds for sculpting potent English language curricula, harmoniously resonating with the students' ambitions while adeptly bridging their skill deficits. In summation, this research not only augments the caliber of tourism pedagogy but also unfurls a roadmap for educators, equipping them with the acumen to meticulously tailor their instructional strategies, ensuring a holistic address of students' target needs.

Abstract

This study used qualitative research that consisted of ten students from senior high school in Luwu. To determine the extrinsic motivation when the students learn from home, the students answered the interview that consisted of ten items. The study discovered that learning English at home makes children sluggish and that their drive to learn lowers due to their surroundings, teachers, and parents. On the environmental side, disruptions at home, such as the sound of chickens, televisions, car horns, or the unsettling sounds of motorcycles, are common when beginning lessons. On the teacher's side, most teachers give students assignments without thoroughly explaining the material, causing students to be sluggish about taking home lessons, particularly in English subjects. Because they are lazy, teachers are ineffective at carrying out their responsibilities by satisfying the needs of children. Physiological demands, the market to be accepted and loved, the need for self-esteem, and the need for self-realization are all examples. When studying at home, their children's interest in learning is stifled by the lack of parental attention. Children feel abandoned when their parents are preoccupied with their professions. Parents and families must be there for this condition, especially during the learning period. The necessity of parents and families to participate actively in their children's education is vital, especially during a pandemic when teachers and educational facilities are restricted.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the teaching methods used by the English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Sengkang and how the students perceived those methods. Sengkang served as the location, and a qualitative research design was applied. Three instruments were used in this research, which was a total purposive sampling. The first was an observation checklist for teachers who are instructing online learning. (2) interviewing teachers to learn about their tactics, and (3) interviewing students to see how they view teachers' strategies The study's findings showed that: 1) Three different teaching methods were used by the teachers in online instruction. There were discussions, stories, and dialogues. Because it is based on a manual and is simple to practice online, teachers adopt this technique. Other tactics are occasionally employed by teachers, but they are uncommon because they are ineffective while teaching online. 2) The study's findings demonstrate that all of the teachers' online learning tactics were supported by students' perceptions of those strategies. Students believed that using the tactics in online learning was successful in assisting them in understanding the subject matter. Additionally, pupils are engaged and readily understand the subject when it is presented through the teacher's chosen media.

Abstract

The literacy program is a strategy implemented by schools worldwide with the aim of making their citizens literate for a lifetime. This research aims to determine: 1) the implementation of character development of students through an English literacy program based on storytelling, 2) the integration of character development of students through an English literacy program based on storytelling. This research used qualitative descriptive methods with data collection and analysis techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. The subjects of this research were two teachers acting as model teachers and students from classes X-1 and X-3. The research was conducted at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) 2 Kota Makassar in the first semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. Before conducting the research, the researcher and teachers discussed the implementation process of the learning, the timeline of activities, and the agreed-upon topics. The results of this research were as follows: 1) the implementation of character development began with a prayer before starting the English literacy program based on storytelling. It was then followed by reviewing narrative text material, Q&A sessions, assignment, and finally, performing storytelling to foster the characters of discipline, hard work, responsibility, and creativity with a percentage ranging from 78.86 (good category) to 87.68 (very good category). This indicated that all students actively participated in each stage of the program, emphasizing the importance of character education, as clearly stated in Surah al-Qalam, verse 4. 2) English teachers at MAN 2 Kota Makassar have integrated character development into English language learning. It was included in lesson planning, material selection, media usage, classroom management, and assessment. In addition, English teachers have a comprehensive understanding of English language learning based on storytelling. This literacy program could foster the character of students as education and habituation in their daily activities.
