Abstract

To effectively implement an independent curriculum, teachers must excel at engaging classroom management. This research aimed to identify challenges faced by English teachers in managing seventh-grade classes at UPTD SMP Negeri 4 Gunungsitoli and the factors contributing to these difficulties. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to gather data through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and student surveys. The data were analyzed to pinpoint specific challenges and their underlying causes. English teachers encountered nine primary classroom management issues, including difficulties in creating conducive learning environments, concluding lessons, managing transitions, and interacting with parents. Teachers also struggled with fostering a positive classroom community and providing effective rewards. Additionally, challenges arose in monitoring student progress, organizing group work, and assessing student performance. Teacher interviews revealed that time constraints, academic priorities, and limited school resources were major factors contributing to these difficulties. This study indicates that time, academic workload, and insufficient school resources significantly hinder English teachers' ability to manage their classrooms effectively within the independent curriculum framework.

Abstract

This study aims to determine and describe the learning process in the Paket B education program and the differences between Junior High School and the Paket B education program. This research was conducted at PKBMs that implement the Paket B Program in Gunungsitoli City, consisting of PKBM Ziona, PKBM Pelita Bangsa, PKBM Kreasi, and PKBM Perjuangan. The research method used was a qualitative descriptive approach. Data was collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the learning process in Paket B consists of 3 types, namely, Independent, Tutorial, and Face-to-Face, and there are differences in the learning process between SMP and Paket B in Gunungsitoli city, such as the characteristics of students, facilities and resources, learning schedules, teaching methods, and examinations carried out. In addition, there are also similarities between these two institutions, such as the curriculum used, which is the national curriculum, and the diploma issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture, which means that Paket B is recognized and has the exact legality of junior high school. The learning process in junior high school tends to be more structured and formal, while in Paket B, it is more flexible and individualized to suit the students. Efforts are needed to integrate the advantages of each learning system to create a more effective learning environment for all learners in each education unit.

The survey subject is class VIII-1 of SMP Negeri 2 Sirombu in 2022/2023 with 19 students. The researcher used observation sheets, assessment sheets, and field notes to collect data. From there, the researcher made some suggestions related to the research results, specifically: (1) In teaching writing, teachers first need to motivate students to create great motivation for learning English in general and writing fluently in English in particular; (2) SMP Negeri 2 Sirombu in English teachers should use group discussion method to improve students' ability to write narrative writing, especially fables; (3) Students need to be encouraged to use dictionaries in the process of learning English; (4) SMP Negeri 2 Sirombu English teachers must be able to apply appropriate writing teaching strategies to students. After conducting research by applying the Group Discussion strategy for two cycles and four meetings, this strategy was successfully implemented in class VIII-1 of SMP Negeri 2 Sirombu to obtain good results; there was an increase, as the researchers hoped.
