Abstract

Community Outreach (CO) activity is an object taught in the Bioconservation Lab (BIO 4012), which since three years ago added as part of lab materials. This lab is mandatory for students at fifth semester in Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Andalas University. This paper descriptively analyzes the conducts of CO as it may be considerable as part of the community services independently performed on the department or study program level. The analysis focused on the 2017’s CO activities, by comparing the proposals and reports given by the students who conducted the CO and then complemented with data gained through Focus Group Discussion on each student group. The 2017 CO activities brought up conservation and applied biology as their main topics, and targeted groups in society as well as students in elementary and middle schools. Feedbacks given by the targeted audiences complimented the CO activities as it complements the school curriculum by adding conservation and applicative biology aspects. Moreover, these activities retain potential to generally improve people awareness on the protection of environment. This study recommends the continuity of CO activity, by paying attention on some weaknesses and technical difficulties recorded on 2017 CO activities and improving it in the future.

Abstract

Essential Ecosystem Area (EEA) Belibis Island is located in Solok Regency, West Sumatra Province which renown as the habitat for significant population of Whistling Ducks Dendrocygna javanica (vernacular name: Belibis). In line with the development of tourism sector in this area, through site clearing, the building of recreational facilities and human establishment, seem to have neglected the ecological aspect during the process. The idea to recover the typical characteristic of this area as habitat for the whistling ducks has been recently stated by the Municipal Authority of Solok City. Recalling that this area has been severely impacted by human, hence comprehending its socio-ecological aspects becomes essential to support the development of an environmental-friendly ecotourism activity herein. Therefore, a socio-ecological survey was then conducted to understand the perception and knowledge of local community toward the biodiversity in Belibis Island, especially in its relation to the tourism activity. Eighteen respondents, consisted of visitors and local people, were inquired using socio-ecological questionnaire, which later descriptively analyzed. The result showed that most of the respondents satisfied with the current condition of Belibis Island, with emphasis for further improvement on the management system. There was indication of people willingness to participate in maintaining the environmental condition. Lot of respondents possess knowledge regarding wild plants and animals in Belibis Island, even before the establishment of tourism site in that area; however, the existence of these wildlife not what attracted them to come. These findings indicate the needs to further improve natural biodiversity in Belibis Island as focal point for ecotourism destination. It can be achieved, presumably, through isolating some parts of the area from human interference to help the thriving of natural wildlife, constructing nature-basesd aviary to introduce the whistling ducks or other wild birds, as well as deploying any other way.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Ecosystem changes due to human activities can affect habitats for several organisms, such as spiders. Spiders have an important role as a predator for mosquitoes, flies, and ants. One of the spider families is Salticidae. Most species from Salticidae are cosmopolitan and often found in an area with dense human activity, such as residential areas. Study about spider species in residential areas is important to determine the effect of urbanization on spider diversity. This research aimed to study about spider species from Salticidae family found in the Serang Residential Area. The individual spider was caught directly by hand, then documented with macro photography techniques. Data analysis was carried out by describing the morphological characters. The results showed 5 species, namely Hasarius adansoni, Menemerus nigli, Menemerus fulvulus, Plexippus paykulli and Plexippus petersi. Documentation using good photography helps in making identification easier. This research is expected to be used as a reference for further research about a spider in a residential area.

Abstract

Odonata, which consists of true dragonflies and damselflies, is considerably understudied in Sumatra, especially in West Sumatra region. While the campus area of Andalas University in Limau Manis provides many suitable habitats for dragonflies and damselflies, the least has been done in learning these organisms. In this paper, we intend to conduct the inventory of Odonata in Limau Manis area by using photography approach (by taking decent pictures only, without sampling the animal). After spending 14 days of data collection which spanned from October 2017 until February 2018), we listed 27 Odonata species. Of which, 11 species belong to four families under suborder Zygoptera and 16 species grouped into four families under suborder Anisoptera. Libellulidae is a family under Anisoptera that was found with most species members. Photography approach promises an immense help in doing species inventory for this animal group for its reliability in determining species identification without harming species’ population. Keywords: damselflies, dragonflies, Libellulidae, Limau Manis area, photography approach
