Abstract

Abstract: The rapid advancement of technology in various fields, including education, demands that teachers keep up with these developments. Today, teachers need to be able to teach conventionally and use technology as a teaching medium. To face the challenges of 21st-century learning, teachers need to have skills in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to transfer this knowledge to students, equipping them with strong knowledge and technological skills. Teachers must also instill character and personality education in students, as knowledge and technology alone are not sufficient to meet the challenges of 21st-century learning. Therefore, teachers must possess extensive knowledge, think innovatively, be prepared to face various challenges and be wise in solving problems. This Community Service Activity (CSA) aims to strengthen teachers’ abilities in using digital applications in the learning process to make it more optimal, such as using applications like Canva, Quizizz, and others. The methods used in this PkM activity include training and assignments for teachers to create learning that meets the current needs of students. The impact of this activity is that teachers become more motivated to innovate in their classroom teaching processes.Keyword: digital applications; 21st century learning; elementary school Abstrak: Kemajuan teknologi yang pesat di berbagai bidang, termasuk pendidikan, menuntut guru untuk mengikuti perkembangan tersebut. Abstract

A tier test is used in science teaching and learning to assess students’ understanding of specific scientific domains. Despite its popularity, limited research has investigated the development of this test. This study aimed to explore the development of tier tests in science education, considering aspects such as representation in selected science education journals, regions, contributors, levels of education, most-cited articles, and specific scientific domains. A systematic literature review was conducted, manually examining 35 articles from selected journals: the International Journal of Science Education (IJSE), the Journal of Research in Science Teaching (JRST), Science Education (SE), the International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education (IJMA), and Research in Science Education (RISE). The findings indicate that some journals published research on tier tests, while others did not. Notably, the dominant scientific domains were biology, chemistry, and physics, which is consistent with findings from other studies focusing on scientific reasoning tests. Finally, the implications of these findings will be discussed.

Abstract

This research investigates the development of Computational Thinking (CT) studies in science education by examining selected science journals. It focuses on 1) the distribution of CT research, 2) the proportion of CT-related articles, 3) research methods, 4) authors and citations, 5) education levels, and 6) scientific disciplines and topics. Despite limited systematic literature reviews on CT, its importance in science education is evident as it fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This bibliometric review uses Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) to analyze 13 articles from five reputable international journals: Journal of Science Education (IJSE), International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education (IJMA), Journal of Research in Science Teaching (JRST), Science Education (SE), and Research in Science Education (RISE). Findings show that CT research began to develop in 2019. The mixed method is the most widely used in CT research (40%), with JRST publishing the most CT articles (70%). Citations for CT articles are not yet significant, with the highest being 119. Research at the elementary level needs more attention, as many studies focus on secondary schools. CT STEM is the most focused topic in these journals. Other findings are discussed in detail.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the comprehension levels of prospective primary school teachers regarding verbal and visual representation models of static electricity. A survey was conducted involving 110 prospective teachers from West Java Province, selected through purposive sampling. Participants were categorized based on their secondary school study programs and gender. The study utilized a five-tier test as the instrument for data collection, with responses analyzed using descriptive statistics. Verbal and visual responses were categorized into several levels. Analysis revealed that the majority of both verbal and visual responses fell into the lack of knowledge, misconception, unidentified categories. These findings highlight the inadequate understanding of static electricity concepts among prospective primary school teachers, which may contribute to students' difficulties. Differences in educational background and gender did not significantly influence the comprehension levels in either verbal or visual representations of static electricity concepts. This provides insight into the fact that the topic of static electricity, though often regarded as straightforward and revisited at various educational stages from primary to secondary school, remains a source of widespread misunderstanding and error. The study underscores the critical need for targeted interventions in teacher education programs to enhance understanding and effective teaching of scientific concepts like static electricity at the primary school level.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) on enhancing critical thinking skills in an open and distance learning (ODL) environment, focusing on a biology education program. The research employed a pre-experimental one-group posttest-only design with 35 students participating in online sessions. These sessions involved formulating questions, designing experiments, conducting observations, and analyzing data. Quantitative analysis using percentages, means, standard deviations, and regression revealed that over 75% of students achieved very good performance in key areas like formulating hypotheses and designing experiments. The regression analysis confirmed that IBL significantly affected critical thinking skills (R² = 0.849; p = 0.05). The study concludes that a systematic learning design that encourages active learning and provides continuous feedback is crucial for developing critical thinking skills in ODL settings. These findings provide insights for curriculum developers and educators to optimize IBL implementation, thereby enhancing educational outcomes and fostering independent learning in distance education environments. Further research is suggested to refine this approach and ensure deeper understanding and application of scientific principles.
