Abstract

The J-Curve is an assumption that exchange rate depreciation will improve a country's trade balance in the long term. This phenomenon occurs when exchange rate depreciation causes the trade balance to worsen in the short term. However, in the long term the trade balance will improve and increase permanently. This study aims to test whether the J-Curve phenomenon occurs in Indonesia's bilateral trade balance with the five largest trading partners using the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) method and in the observation period 2010.1-2022.12. The results of the analysis of the Impulse Response Function (IRF) show that the J-Curve phenomenon occurs in the trade balance model between Indonesia and Japan and the United States. Meanwhile, for Indonesia's trade balance with the European Union, exchange rate depreciation can improve the trade balance directly. For Indonesia's trade balance with China and Singapore, exchange rate depreciation improves the trade balance initially, but will worsen (inverted J-curve) in the long term so that the long-term impact of exchange rate depreciation on the trade balance is negative.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology in Indonesia’s financial sector, particularly through electronic money and non-cash instruments, has accelerated the shift in transaction patterns—especially since the launch of the National Non-Cash Movement (GNNT) by Bank Indonesia and the government in 2014 to promote an efficient, secure, and inclusive digital payment system. Generation Z, especially university students with a financial literacy index of 70.19% (OJK), demonstrates high adaptability to this transition. This study employs multiple linear regression to analyze the influence of income, perceived ease of use, perceived risk, and consumption expenditure on the use of non-cash payments. The findings show that income, perception, and consumption expenditure have a positive and significant effect on non- cash payment usage, shaping digital financial behavior among the youth and offering strategic insights for policymakers and financial institutions to strengthen the development of the non-cash ecosystem.

Abstract

The Marshall-Lerner Condition is a theory that a trade balance deficit can be eliminated through currency depreciation, if in the long term the absolute number of long-term export and import demand elasticities is greater than one. Initially, exchange rate depreciation will have a negative impact on trade through two methods, namely changes in volume and changes in value. This study aims to test whether the Marshall-Lerner Condition fulfilled in Indonesia's bilateral trade balance with the five largest trading partners using the Ordinary Least Squares method and in the observation period 2010.1-2022.12. The results of the Marshall-Lerner Condition study that one of Indonesia's five largest trading partners, namely China, the Marshall-Lerner Condition is met. While for Indonesia's other four largest trading partners, namely Japan, the US, the European Union and Singapore, Indonesia's largest trading partners are uncertain whether they meet the Marshall-Lerner Condition or not.
