Abstract

Despite the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, research often emphasizes its efficiency while overlooking its ethical implications, particularly with respect to algorithmic bias and teacher agency. This study aims at examining how junior high school teachers in Lumajang Regency, East Java, Indonesia perceive the bias and inclusivity of AI systems, and their pedagogical agencies when using AI tools in Indonesian EFL classroom settings. A qualitative approach was employed, involving questionnaire responses from 20 teachers and semi-structured interviews with 12 selected participants. The data revealed that while teachers appreciate AI for streamlining lesson planning and content generation, they are also aware of the limitations in its cultural and linguistic representation in AI-generated content. Many participants actively modify AI-generated materials to reflect their students’ local contexts better. However, only a small proportion reported receiving AI training in educational settings, highlighting a significant gap in institutional support. This study is limited by its localized sample and the reliance on self-reported data, which may affect generalizability. Nonetheless, the findings underscore the need for targeted professional development that includes not only technical training but also ethical and cultural competencies. Practically, this research informs policy on teacher preparation for AI integration. Socially, it contributes to more equitable digital education practices by centering the teacher’s role in mediating AI use. Future studies should expand geographically and include student perspectives to develop a more comprehensive understanding of AI’s impact on education.

Abstract

This community service programme was conducted in Kedungsugo Village, Prambon District, Sidoarjo Regency, East Java. The programme identified several crucial problems: 1) Low parental awareness of children's growth and potential; 2) About 47% of the community is on the poverty line; 3) High school dropout rate at productive age; 4) Children working not in accordance with their expertise; 5) High divorce rate due to early marriage; 6) High risk of juvenile delinquency such as crime, alcohol, and drugs. The Doktor Mengabdi (KDM) group of Unisma Malang implemented this workshop programme using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, supported by data from the social services and village government. The aim is to overcome these crucial problems through increasing parents' awareness as the main driver of mindset change, optimising the role of parents, and increasing awareness of the importance of education for children and families. This effort aims to gradually reduce and eliminate problems such as school dropouts, early marriage, and juvenile delinquency. The benefits of this community service are in accordance with the needs of Kedungsugo Village and Unisma's vision and mission for global economic peace and equality, as well as supporting the government's SDGs programme which focuses on quality and equitable education and socio-economic development. The success of this community service can be seen from the enthusiasm of the community in participating in the programme and the positive response during the discussion, which is an indication of improving the quality of human resources as the main capital for change in the village.

Abstract

This research analyzes changing patterns of human response to machine speech within the framework of education-enabled AI technologies. This phenomenon is framed within the Media Equation Theory, Cognitive Load Theory, and the Uncanny Valley Hypothesis to study the effects of prolonged exposure to synthetic voices on emotion and trust. With a phenomenological approach, the author interviewed and asked ten Indonesian university students to respond to reflective journals. Students reported that AI voices may facilitate task-focused listening (e.g., to provide the definitions or pronounce words) but do not engage emotionally. Their lack of response adaptability and dynamic responsiveness evoke passive participation, attention drifting, and trust erosion. Students reported feeling emotionally detached, discomfort with hyper-realistic voice mimicry, and cognitive strain attributable to monotonically robotic pacing and tones. Compliance deviated from the voice of authority phenomenon; stronger collective participants expressed a greater need for emotionally responsive signalling. AI tools, while functionally convenient, do not inspire trust as conversational agents. This highlights the need for redesigning listening engagement interfaces and educational AI that adapt not only to the content but also to the user’s emotional context. Research on cross-cultural preferences and the dependence of AI voices on listening and communication skills is necessary.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of the Discovery Learning model in inclusive education to foster tolerance at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, a pesantren known for the diversity of its students’ backgrounds. The background of this research is based on the importance of creating an inclusive and harmonious learning environment amid the cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic plurality of the students. The research employs a qualitative approach using the ethnographic method, involving field observations, unstructured interviews, and documentation conducted over the course of one year within the environment of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. The findings indicate that tolerance education at Gontor is implemented through two models: the direct model, which emphasizes social interaction among student groups, and the indirect model, which focuses on developing open-minded personalities toward differences. The Discovery Learning model is applied in various learning activities, where students are encouraged to actively explore, discover, and collaboratively solve problems. This process not only enhances students’ cognitive and spiritual abilities but also cultivates mutual respect and tolerance, both in passive and active forms. The study concludes that the application of the Discovery Learning model in inclusive education at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor is effective in shaping students’ tolerance attitudes and contributes significantly to the development of character education models in Islamic boarding schools and other educational institutions in Indonesia.
