Abstract

School dropout is often associated with declining motivation and low self-confidence, leaving limited attention to how young people continue to develop a sense of competence outside formal education. This study examines how self-confidence is sustained among dropout youth within everyday social contexts where recognition is shaped less by academic achievement than by social participation. A qualitative field study was conducted in three villages in Malaka Regency, Indonesia, involving 15 dropout youth aged 15–23 years. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, a focus group discussion, participant observation, and a qualitative elicitation questionnaire, then analysed thematically using iterative coding, constant comparison, and triangulation. Results indicate that self-confidence does not simply diminish following school disengagement but is reorganised across different evaluative settings. Participants tended to show hesitation in formal institutional spaces while expressing stronger confidence in work activities, peer relationships, and community participation where their contributions were visible and socially valued. Self-confidence emerged as relational and context-dependent, shaped by recognition and opportunities for meaningful participation. School dropout therefore appears less as evidence of diminished personal capability than as a shift in evaluative environments. These findings offer a recognition-based perspective with implications for the development of nonformal education programmes.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has transformed reading patterns from printed media to digital media. As digital natives, university students tend to utilize online reading applications as sources of information and reading materials. This study aimed to determine the effect of online reading applications on the digital reading interest of students in the Non-Formal Education Study Program at Universitas Nusa Cendana. The study employed an associative quantitative approach with a population of 229 active students from semesters 2 to 8 and a sample of 70 respondents selected using the Slovin formula. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire distributed via Google Forms and analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed that online reading applications have a positive and significant effect on students’ digital reading interest, with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected. The regression equation obtained was Y=20.034+0.716X. The regression coefficient value of 0.716 indicates that every one-unit increase in the use of online reading applications increases students’ digital reading interest by 0.716 units. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R²) value of 0.667 indicates that online reading applications contribute 66.7% to students’ digital reading interest, while the remaining 33.3% is influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study. These findings suggest that online reading applications play an important role in enhancing students’ digital reading interest and supporting self-directed learning in the digital era.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilatarbelakangi oleh keterbatasan kompetensi guru nonformal di SPNF-SKB Bengkulu Tengah dalam mengembangkan media pembelajaran digital yang interaktif dan sesuai dengan kebutuhan warga belajar Paket A, B, dan C. Kegiatan ini bertujuan meningkatkan keterampilan guru dalam merancang dan mengembangkan media pembelajaran numerasi berbasis Android berbantuan iSpring Suite. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi koordinasi dan identifikasi kebutuhan, pelatihan, workshop, praktik langsung, pendampingan pengembangan produk, uji coba terbatas, serta evaluasi melalui angket pre-test dan post-test. Peserta kegiatan terdiri atas guru nonformal SPNF-SKB Bengkulu Tengah. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengalaman dan kesiapan peserta dalam menggunakan iSpring Suite dan mengembangkan media pembelajaran berbasis Android. Pada awal kegiatan, seluruh peserta menyatakan belum pernah menggunakan iSpring Suite. Setelah pendampingan, seluruh peserta menyatakan telah menggunakan aplikasi tersebut dan memberikan respons positif terhadap kemampuan menyusun materi, membuat kuis interaktif, mengonversi media ke format HTML5, serta menghasilkan aplikasi Android. Kegiatan ini menghasilkan delapan aplikasi media pembelajaran berbasis Android pada materi Aritmatika Sosial, Bangun Ruang Sisi Datar, Bangun Ruang Sisi Lengkung, Lingkaran, Peluang, Pythagoras, Statistika, dan Transformasi Geometri. Selain itu, dihasilkan website Library Digital SPNF-SKB Bengkulu Tengah sebagai wadah sumber belajar digital. Dengan demikian, pendampingan ini berkontribusi terhadap peningkatan kapasitas guru dan penguatan ekosistem pembelajaran digital pada pendidikan nonformal. Evaluasi lanjutan melalui tes numerasi yang terukur masih diperlukan untuk mengetahui dampak penggunaan media terhadap kemampuan numerasi warga belajar.
