Abstract

In the context of globalized teacher education, the integration of language competence into the development of professional identity among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student-teachers remains insufficiently addressed. This study explores how non-native English-speaking student-teachers construct their professional identity through the lens of language competence during international teaching practicums. Employing a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, the research investigates the lived experiences of two Indonesian EFL student-teachers who participated in the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) exchange program. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews and document analysis, including lesson plans, reflective journals, and mentor feedback. The analysis identified four key themes: language competence as a catalyst for identity formation, self-awareness as a foundation for professional growth, the integration of disciplinary knowledge into teaching practice, and student-centered engagement. The findings reveal divergent pathways in identity construction, shaped by how each participant perceived and responded to linguistic challenges. One student-teacher reframed language anxiety as an opportunity for transformation, while the other struggled with persistent self-doubt despite technical preparation. This study addresses a critical gap in teacher education literature by emphasizing how language competence functions as a core element of professional identity, rather than a supplementary skill. The results offer practical implications for designing teacher education curricula that prioritize reflective practice, language support, and identity development. By situating language competence within the broader process of becoming an effective educator, this study contributes to a more holistic understanding of teacher preparation in international and intercultural settings.

Abstract

Social constructions during Indonesia’s New Order era often shaped gender stereotypes that positioned women as self-sacrificing figures confined to domestic roles and economically dependent on men. This study aims to identify gender stereotypes attached to female characters and analyze their resistance to such stereotypes in the short story Siang Itu Panas Sekali, published in Femina magazine, edition of November 4, 1980, No. 196. Using a qualitative approach, this research applies content analysis with Mansour Fakih’s gender theory within a feminist literary framework. The findings reveal that the female character is portrayed as someone who sacrifices personal needs for the sake of her family. However, the story also illustrates resistance through the character’s involvement in social activities outside the home, financial independence, and assertiveness in confronting patriarchal control within personal relationships. The main character, Mira, is depicted as an educated, professionally active woman who is financially self-sufficient and firmly v oices her opinions to her husband. The conclusion of this study indicates that the short story not only reflects the prevailing gender norms of the 1980s but also functions as a narrative space of resistance, offering an alternative representation of women as autonomous and empowered individuals.

Abstract

This paper examines the translation of non-standard orthographic features of the Australian Aboriginal English (AAE) dialect in Sally Morgan’s biographical novel My Place into the Indonesian language. Addressing the challenges posed by linguistic and cultural untranslatability, this study explores three key questions: (1) What strategies are employed by the translator to convey the AAE dialect into Indonesian? (2) How do these strategies influence the transfer of the original message? (3) What alternative strategies could mitigate linguistic and cultural loss, especially given the sociolinguistic gap between AAE and Indonesian? Following J. K. Chamber’s (2004) features of vernacular universals, the analysis identifies four primary types of non-standard orthographic features of AAE in My Place: (1) Alveolar Substitution in –ing Ending Verbs, (2) Deletion of Initial Unstressed Syllable, (3) Eye Dialect, and (4) Morpheme Simplification. Findings indicate that the translation often fails to retain AAE as a distinctive literary dialect, which is largely due to the absence of equivalents in Indonesian language. The translator predominantly uses standard Indonesian renderings, which reduces the portrayal of non-standard elements of the source text However, the study emphasizes compensation as a practical strategy to minimize translation loss. By compensating for the loss of non-standard effects through other means, such as using elements of a local dialect from the target culture in the translation, translators can maintain the centrality of dialect within the story. Although the exact level of non-standardness may not be fully replicated, this approach preserves some of the cultural and linguistic uniqueness, offering a balanced compromise that conveys the broader essence of AAE dialect in the target text.

Abstract

One of the most important areas of focus in English instruction, especially at higher levels, is the ability to interpret and assess the underlying meanings of written and spoken texts, particularly those that deal with social issues. To help students develop their critical thinking and discourse analysis skills, teachers can include real-world materials like TED Talks in English language instruction. Through a critical discourse lens, this study examines how Melissa Butler's TED Talk, Why You Think You're Ugly, questions prevailing beauty standards. The study focuses on the descriptive and explanatory elements of Fairclough's framework while analyzing the textual elements and social contexts of Butler's discourse. Data were collected from the video transcript and categorized using Hall's beauty framework to emphasize themes such as body size, face traits, skin tone, and hair texture. The findings showed that Butler used rhetorical strategies and personal storytelling to critique linear beauty norms, expose the emotional toll of conformity, and advocate for a more inclusive vision of beauty. Her discourse emerged as a counter-narrative, resisting Eurocentric ideals and affirming cultural identity and self-acceptance. Ultimately, the study underscores the role of discourse in shaping social perceptions and supports the ongoing movement toward equity in beauty representation.

Abstract

The media plays a crucial role in shaping public understanding of international conflicts through strategic linguistic choices that can reveal underlying ideological positions. This study aims to analyze how social actors in the Palestine-Israel conflict after October 7, 2023, are represented in the English-language news coverage of Al Jazeera, USA Today, and The Jakarta Post. Using Critical Discourse Analysis with a focus on van Leeuwen's Social Actor Representation framework, the research examined fifteen news articles published between October 2023 and May 2024 to identify patterns of inclusion and exclusion strategies employed by each news outlet. Findings revealed that Al Jazeera actively portrays both Hamas and Israeli forces as primary agents while occasionally depersonalizing individuals through collectivization; USA Today tends to exclude individual Palestinian actors through indeterminate references while representing Israeli actors more often as collective entities; and The Jakarta Post explicitly names key figures from both sides, personalizing the conflict while emphasizing their opposing roles. These varying representation strategies reflect different editorial approaches that influence how responsibility, agency, and legitimacy are attributed in conflict reporting, ultimately shaping public perception and discourse around the complex geopolitical situation.
