Abstract

Abstract

The Batang Arau River is the second longest river in the city of Padang (West Sumatra). Many anthropogenic activities can reduce water quality. This study aimed to determine the correlation water quality with the hydrological parameters of the Batang Arau River (2013-2020). The data taken is secondary data from several agencies in the city of Padang. Data analysed was secondary data from various institution in Padang. Simple Linear Regression between water quality parameters towards velocity and river discharge was applied. River discharge correlated with DO (r = 0.68), and velocity is very closely correlated with TDS (r = 0.82) in the rainy season. Meanwhile, very close correlation between discharge and TDS (r = 0.98) and velocity with DO (r = 0.95) in the dry season.

Abstract

Lhokseumawe is a designated as an Economic Growth Center (EGC), making it very susceptible to producing heavy metals. This research aimed to measure the content of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in oysters (Saccostrea cucullata), water, and sediment in the Cunda Strait, as well as evaluate the relationship between heavy metals and environmental conditions. The experiment was conducted at five stations selected based on considerations of seawater inflow and outflow into the Cunda Strait and existing pollution sources. The results showed that high levels of Pb and Cd with 0.36 and 0.00 mg.kg-1 for S. cucullata, 0.07 and 0.01 mg.kg-1 for water, as well as 7.60 and 0.03 mg.kg-1 for sediment, were found at locations away from the inflow and outflow of the Malacca Strait. The analysis showed a positive pattern in the relationship between Pb metal levels in S. cucullata with water and sediment. This suggested that Pb pollution in S. cucullata came from Pb metal in sediment and water, showing a significant effect on aquatic organisms. However, no clear relationship was found between Cd metal in S. cucullata with sediment and water. The main differences in Pb and Cd between parts were observed in the levels of Pb in water (r= 0.59) and Cd in water (r= 0.71), where higher concentrations were found in central part of the Cunda Strait compared to the southern and northern. Contaminants of heavy metals in S. cucullata, water, and sediment were significantly influenced by temperature, sediment fraction, and organic matter.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the types, abundance and composition of the stranded marine debris and its impact on the mangrove ecosystem in Liquiça Municipality, Timor-Leste. Data were collected from 6 September 2024 to 30 October 2024 at three stations using surveys and direct field observations. Analysis was conducted both quantitatively and qualitatively. Seven types of debris were identified : plastic, metal, glass, rubber, fabric, organic and other inorganic waste. Plastic was the most dominant at all stations, Station 1 recorded the highest debris abundance at 1.62 items/m², with plastic waste also dominating by category at Stations 1 and 3 (155 items/m² and 137 items/m²). Station 1 also had the heaviest debris weight at 4,339 g/m² and the largest volume at 235 cm³/m². The findings indicate that stranded marine debris does have a negative impact on the mangrove ecosystem, significant negative correlation between the weight of marine debris and macrozoobenthos. However no correlation between debris and mangrove’s seedlings was found.

Abstract

The Cileungsi River is the upstream part of the Bekasi Watershed, and its existence is crucial for the sustainability of the local economy and the survival of the community, industry, agriculture, and commerce surrounding the riverbanks. It is also the raw water source for Regional Water Company. This study aims to assess the water quality of the Cileungsi River and its pollution status using the Pollution Index (PI) method. This research was conducted at six sampling points, covering the upstream, middle, and downstream sections in both the dry and rainy seasons of 2022. The method used to analyze the water quality of the Cileungsi River refers to the Indonesian National Standard. In contrast, the calculation of the PI refers to the Decree of the State Minister of Environment. During the dry season, the PI at the Regional Water Company bridge in Kota Wisata and beside PT Rahayu Indah Kulit fell into the moderately polluted category, with PI values of 5.49 and 7.30, respectively. The highest PI value during the rainy season was recorded at 10.30 on the border of Bogor Regency and Bekasi City, which falls within the heavily polluted category. The Gunung Putri area has a lightly polluted index value in both seasons. The parameters that require attention are BOD, NO2-, free chlorine, and fecal coliform, which serve as indicators of pollution from household and agricultural activities. These results will help the Bogor Regency government develop strategies to protect and sustainably manage the Cileungsi River.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze garbage waste data by day in a week at the Cituis Fish Landing Base (PPI Cituis), identify the causes of waste issues, and provide recommendations for waste management and handling. The research was conducted over two weeks of observation. Data were collected through waste characterization, total and average garbage waste volume measurements, the number of waste containers, and waste type composition from several source points. The results show that waste volume tends to increase at the end of the month, on weekends, and during holidays, following higher visitor numbers and fishing activities. Inorganic waste, especially plastic was the most dominant type across all port zones. The 3 kg container representing the harbor area had the highest percentage of waste bins compared with the 4 kg and 10 kg containers. Proper waste management is necessary to minimize pollution impacts at PPI Cituis and the surrounding environment. Recommended actions include improving waste facilities, strengthening governance and regulations, and enhancing community awareness and participation.
