Abstract

Background: Long-term, intense sun exposure can cause erythema and sunburn, as well as premature aging and skin cancer. For generations, the people of the Banjar tribe of Borneo have applied a wet paste of Sonneratia caseolaris leaves mixture on the skin when undertaking tasks in the hot sun. The Sonneratia caseolaris tree is a mangrove plant that grows on river banks throughout the Borneo Island. Objectives: The study aims to formulate Sonneratia caseolaris leaves ethanol extract into a stable lotion and test its efficacy as a sunscreen. Methods: Sonneratia caseolaris leaves were macerate with 70% ethanol, and the sunscreen activity of the extract was examined in vitro with a UV-visible spectrophotometer, and then formulated into a lotion dosage form. Organoleptic and homogeneity observations, pH measurements, viscosity measurements, and spreadability measurements were all performed on the lotion. Following that, the lotion sunscreen activity of was tested in vitro. Results: The Sonneratia caseolaris extract sunscreen lotion has met the requirements of organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, and spreadability tests. Conclusions and suggestions: Sunscreen lotion with 2.5% Sonnerata caseolaris extract classified as standard suntan. Sonneratia caseolaris extract of Borneo has the potential to develop as a raw material for herbal cosmetics.

Abstract

Abstract

Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea L.) is a plant used for medicinal purposes, including therapeutic, cosmetic, nutritional, and beauty applications. Flavonoids, as secondary metabolites with diverse chemical structures in plants, perform various important functions. These functions include growth regulation, coloration, protection from UV rays, and roles in defense mechanisms and signaling systems with microorganisms. These compounds also have pharmacological effects as antidiabetics, antioxidants, and antibacterials. Solvent concentration plays an important role, as it can affect the amount of active compounds extracted from natural materials. The purpose of this study was to determine the flavonoid content in butterfly pea flower extracts using ethanol solvents at concentrations of 50%, 70%, and 95%. The results of phytochemical screening tests showed that all extracts contained secondary metabolites in the form of flavonoids. Other parameters analyzed included yield, moisture content, and flavonoid content from the three ethanol concentration variations. The yields obtained were 57.14%, 54.08%, and 40.72%, respectively, while the moisture content was 9.44 ± 2.17%, 8.99 ± 2.12%, and 7.75 ± 1.97%, respectively. The highest flavonoid content was obtained in the extract with 95% ethanol solvent at 1.2939 ± 0.0880%, followed by 70% ethanol at 0.6958 ± 0.0573%, and 50% ethanol at 0.5811 ± 0.0142%. Statistical analysis using ANOVA showed that there were differences in flavonoid content between the ethanol concentration variation groups

Abstract

White Temu (Curcuma zedoaria (Berg.) Roscoe) has an actoxidant activity because it contains phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds are aromatic compounds with a structure derived from benzene so that they have aromatic rings and the presence of one or more hydroxyl (OH) groups. This study aims to determine the total phenol content of white rhizome ethanol extract with the difference in solvent concentration using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The research conducted is an experimental research. The results showed that the rhizome of white temu contained secondary metabolite compounds in the form of phenolics, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and terpenoids. Based on the results of determining the total phenol content of white temu extract with a difference in ethanol solvent concentrations of 30%, 50%, and 70%, the levels were 23.4477±0.9827 mg GAE/g, 32.2464±1.3022 mg GAE/g, and 51.6880±0.4948 mg GAE/g. The results of statistical analysis obtained normal and homogeneous data so that a one-way anova test with p value results was used(0.00) < (0.05) so it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the total phenol levels of the three samples.

Abstract

Kelakai (Stenochlaena palustris (Burm F.) Bedd.) is a medicinal plant of Borneo. The purpose of this research is to determine the level of flavonoid in crude extract of kelakai leaf by UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. The research was conducted by collection of the kelakai leaves and plant determination. The ethanolic extract of kelakai leaves was collected using macceration methode. The determination of flavonoid level was conducted by UV-Vis Spectrophotometer using quersetin as standard compound. The study showed that the rendemen of crude extract of kelakai leaf was (22,92%). The moisture content in viscous extract was (19,71%). The level of Flavonoids in extract was (2,2159±0,083%).
