Abstract

Senggani leaves are herbal plants that have antibacterial properties and contain phytochemical compounds in the form of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, steroids, and glycosides. The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitivity of Senggani (Melastoma candidum) leaf extract to the inhibition of the growth of Shigella ATCC 25931 in vitro. Reidentification of bacteria was carried out by Gram staining, and the sensitivity test was conducted on Mueller Hinton Agar media (MHA). Chloramphenicol was used as a positive control, and 1% CMC was used as a negative control. The results of the Gram staining showed Shigella ATCC 25931 bacteria, and the inhibition zone formed at each concentration was 25% (8.26 0.096 mm), 50% (9.02 0.158 mm), and 75% (9.83 0.100 mm). It can be concluded that all concentrations of the ethanol extract of senggani leaves have inhibitory sensitivity to the growth of Shigella ATCC 25931 in the weak category because the inhibition zone formed was 12 mm."

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance has become a global problem, this happens because strains of bacteria in the body are resistant to antibiotics, one of which is caused by improper use. This study aims to determine the resistance of Salmonella sp. isolated from broiler chickens to antibiotics. The method used for this study is the Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. The research samples were eight isolates from broiler chickens collected by the Laboratory of Microbiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Syiah Kuala. This study used antibiotics amoxicillin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, and tetracycline. The data obtained are processed descriptively. The results showed five isolates (62.5%) showed multidrug resistance and very high levels of resistance to antibiotics from eight samples tested, namely tetracycline 87.5% (7/8), chloramphenicol 75% (6/8), amoxicillin 62.5% (5/8), and streptomycin 62.5% (5/8). Antibiotics that are still sensitive are gentamicin 62.5% (5/8) and ciprofloxacin 50% (4/8). Therefore, it can be concluded that Salmonella sp. has been resistant to several types of antibiotics.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of ethanol extract of neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves on the number of spermatids and androgen receptor expression in the testicular tissue of New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits. Twelve adults male NZW rabbits with body weight (BW) 2-2.5 kg were divided into three treatment groups (n = 4), namely P1 (control group) given 0 mg/kg BW, P2 and P3 were given 200 mg/kg BW and 300 mg/kg BW of neem leaves ethanol extract respectively. The extract was administered orally using a gastric tube for 52 days. At the end of the treatment, the rabbits were terminated and the testes were collected to be processed into histological preparations and stained with Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) staining to detect the number of spermatid and Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining to detect androgen receptor expression. The results showed that neem leaves extract administered at P3 rabbits significantly decreased the number of spermatids and androgen receptor expression in myoid peritubular cells and connective tissue P0.05), but not significantly different in the Leydig cells and blood vessels (P0.05) of testicular tissue. The conclusion of this study is that the ethanol extract of neem leaves at a dose of 300 mg/kg BW can be used as a contraceptive candidate compared to a dose of 200 mg/kg BW.

Abstract

Dermatophytosis, a significant health issue in cats, is a dermatological condition caused by dermatophyte fungi, primarily involving the genera Microsporum, Trichophyton, and Epidermophyton. This study investigates the prevalence of dermatophytosis in cats at Alfa Animal Clinic, Banda Aceh, from June to November 2023. The prevalence of dermatophytosis varies geographically, influenced by climate, environmental conditions, and owner awareness. This study found a prevalence rate of 1.040% with 51 cases among 490 cats. The research highlights the need for improved hygiene practices, regular veterinary check-ups, and education for pet owners to manage and prevent dermatophytosis. The findings underscore the importance of ongoing surveillance and targeted interventions to control this zoonotic infection, ensuring better health outcomes for the feline population.
