Abstract

This activity aims to analyze the effectiveness of a community empowerment program through training on making mosquito repellent spray using lemongrass in increasing the knowledge and skills of residents in Kolam Village. The main issues addressed are the abundant availability of lemongrass that has not been economically utilized and the high dependence of the community on chemically-based mosquito repellents. The method used is a training-based empowerment program with the active participation of 15 housewives, which includes stages of socialization, demonstration, and independent practice based on experiential learning. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in the participants' knowledge level from 40% to 80%. In addition, participants successfully mastered practical skills in producing mosquito repellent spray independently. The conclusion of this activity is that systematically and participatively conducted training is proven effective in optimizing local potential

Abstract

The problem of suboptimal plastic waste management and limited literacy facilities are environmental and educational challenges faced by the Ranggi Literacy Studio. This study aims to describe the implementation of ecobrick training as an effort to increase awareness of plastic waste management among children while supporting literacy activities. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The research subjects consisted of 20 children, with 3 informants selected purposively: 2 participants and 1 studio manager. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation, which were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that ecobrick training was implemented through three stages: preparation, implementation, and utilization. This activity was able to increase children's understanding and awareness of plastic waste management and encourage behavioral changes to be more environmentally conscious. In addition, ecobrick products were used as bookshelves that contributed to increasing the tidiness and comfort of literacy activities. Thus, ecobrick training can be an innovative alternative in participatory-based environmental education.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the suboptimal utilization of local resources, particularly lemongrass plants, as well as the limited life skills-based empowerment program at PKBM Al Manar Medan. This study aims to analyze the use of lemongrass plants as an ingredient in making herbal soap in developing students' life skills. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with a field research type. The research subjects consisted of 10 informants including students, tutors, and PKBM managers who were selected based on their active involvement in training activities. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation, while data analysis used the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that training in making lemongrass-based herbal soap was able to improve students' practical skills, creativity, and participation in learning activities. In addition, the resulting product has economic value and has the potential to be developed as a local resource-based business. The implications of this study indicate that local potential-based training can be a community empowerment strategy that supports strengthening life skills, economic independence, and the development of more contextual and sustainable non-formal education programs

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of economic independence of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) participating in the Car Free Day (CFD) activity at the Stabat City Tribune Field. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with three main informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation, then analyzed using an interactive analysis model through the stages of data reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that CFD activities play an important role in increasing the economic independence of MSMEs, as reflected in five main indicators: (1) free from consumer debt because all business capital comes from personal funds; (2) having strong confidence in business and self-confidence in facing challenges; (3) having investments in the form of savings, gold purchases, and social contributions; (4) being able to manage cash flow by separating personal and business finances and recording transactions regularly; and (5) having a positive mental attitude towards financial disruptions by being prepared to face risks and maintaining business stability. These findings confirm that CFD activities are not only a space for social interaction and marketing, but also function as an economic empowerment ecosystem that strengthens the financial independence and resilience of MSMEs in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of functional literacy within the community of Tanjung Rejo Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. Considering the importance of literacy as a foundation for human resource development and community empowerment, this research employs a qualitative descriptive approach to explore experiences and literacy practices in everyday life. The study involved 22 participants selected through purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGD), participatory observation using various learning media (shopping lists, play money, financial records), and village documentation study. The results indicate that the Tanjung Rejo Village community possesses good literacy levels across three tiers: (1) Basic Literacy - 15 out of 22 people can read, write, and match item names with pictures; (2) Advanced Literacy - 18 out of 22 people can record financial transactions and calculate change; and (3) Functional Literacy - all 22 participants can analyze weekly income-expenditure comparisons and create financial plans. Documentation study confirms that there are no recorded illiterate individuals in this village, with all participants having senior high school educational backgrounds. These findings indicate that the Tanjung Rejo Village community has adequate functional literacy to manage daily life, particularly in household financial management aspects. This study recommends literacy improvement programs that focus more on digital literacy and entrepreneurship to optimize the potential of the already literate community.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited effectiveness of local culture introduction in early childhood education, where cultural learning is often delivered superficially without integrating local wisdom values. The objective of this research is to describe the implementation of local wisdom-based learning in introducing local culture to early childhood, identify the forms of learning activities used, and examine teachers’ efforts in enhancing children's cultural understanding. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation of classroom activities, interviews with teachers, and documentation of learning processes in early childhood education settings. The results indicate that local wisdom-based learning can be effectively implemented through various activities such as introducing traditional clothing, traditional games, local songs, storytelling, and the use of culturally relevant learning media. Teachers play a crucial role in designing contextual and engaging learning experiences that align with children's developmental characteristics. Such approaches enable children to understand and appreciate their local culture more meaningfully. Therefore, integrating local wisdom into early childhood learning is an effective strategy to foster cultural awareness, strengthen identity, and cultivate a sense of pride and love for local heritage from an early age.

Abstract

This study aims to describe efforts to empower adolescent girls through the utilization of sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas L.) as natural facial masks based on local potential in Kampung Sawah Village, Besitang District, Langkat Regency. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques comprising participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research subjects were adolescent girls aged 15–22 years residing in Kampung Sawah Village who actively participated in the training activities for making facial masks from sweet potatoes. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014), encompassing data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that: (1) the training activities successfully enhanced participants’ knowledge and skills in processing sweet potatoes into value-added products; (2) participants demonstrated high enthusiasm and active participation throughout the training process; (3) the facial mask products yielded good quality in terms of texture, ease of application, and natural ingredient content; and (4) the activity opened opportunities for the development of home-scale businesses based on local raw materials. Thus, empowerment based on local potential through skills training proved effective in improving the creativity, independence, and productivity of adolescent girls. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a reference for the development of sustainable community empowerment programs.
