Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using e-comic media on elementary school students’ skills in writing procedural texts. The background of this research is the students’ low ability in writing procedural texts and the limited variety of innovative media used by teachers. The study employed a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design, specifically the one-group pretest-posttest model. The sample consisted of 30 fourth-grade students from SDN Gamping 1. Data were collected through written tests and classroom observation, with writing performance evaluated based on content relevance, grammar, structure, spelling, and sentence formation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired samples t-test with SPSS. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ writing skills. The average score increased from 57.92 in the pretest to 76.46 in the posttest, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05), indicating the effectiveness of e-comic media in enhancing students’ procedural text writing abilities. In conclusion, e-comic media fostered students’ motivation and understanding through visual storytelling and contextual learning. These findings suggest that e-comics can serve as an engaging and effective alternative to traditional instructional methods in elementary writing education.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has determined that English is a compulsory subject in junior high schools, senior high schools, and universities. English in junior high school includes four mandatory skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. In the teaching process, teachers are expected to be perfect. The teacher must be "perfect"; it means they have to be active, creative, innovative, interesting, and achievers so that students can focus on the lessons in class. However, most students have difficulty learning English, especially reading or understanding texts. This research was conducted with the aim of describing the Teacher's Perspective in Teaching Reading Comprehension Using a Reciprocal Strategy. This research was conducted at SMPN 1 Jabon using qualitative methods, data obtained from interviews and observations. The subject in this study is an English teacher at SMPN 1 Jabon. The results of this study indicate that mastery of good learning strategies is an important component of education in supporting the professional duties of teachers as educators. Teachers use reciprocal teaching as a strategy in their learning. Reciprocal strategies can improve students' reading comprehension because students know the essence of what they read globally. In addition, the teacher can also assist students in understanding the meaning contained in the reading text material that has been explained during the reading class.

Abstract

Abstract

Teachers' digital literacy skill is very important, especially in Indonesian language learning, because language material can be enriched through various digital media such as chat applications, social media, and online learning platforms. Digital literacy is not just technical skills in operating digital devices, but also critical thinking, interaction, collaboration, and innovation skills in a safe digital environment. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study type. The case study type of research was used because this study examines in depth a specific case in a real context, namely the practice of digital literacy among teachers in elementary schools. The subjects of this study were two Indonesian language teachers at the public elementary school, namely the fourth-grade Indonesian language teacher and the fifth-grade Indonesian language teacher. The object of this study was the level of digital literacy skills of Indonesian language teachers at Trompoasri 2 Public Elementary School, in the form of skills in using, understanding, and creating digital literacy. The results of the study show that both teachers have integrated digital media such as PowerPoint, Canva, YouTube, and digital quizzes into their teaching. The fourth-grade teacher showed more varied and interactive use of media, while the fifth-grade teacher used digital media in a simpler but still relevant way. Teachers were able to adapt the media to the characteristics of their students, reflect on the effectiveness of technology use, and instill digital ethics and security. The obstacles encountered included limited internet access and infrastructure. In general, the teachers' digital literacy skills were in the good category, although strengthening in the aspects of critical evaluation of information sources and systematic optimization of technology use was still needed. This study provides practical contributions to the development of digital literacy competencies for elementary school teachers.

Abstract

The problem with this research is the lack of skills and thinking skills of humane education in the twenty-first century, especially of critical thinking and problem-solving. It is caused by several factors, one of the main factors is, learning that has not been oriented to the development of the twenty-first-century thinking skills and still only focuses on achieving partial-textual knowledge and not on the integrative-contextual understanding of the knowledge learned. In line with this, it takes an effort to improve the critical thinking skills of Indonesian education. The effort should be initiated by engineering the appropriate education model and on target, one of which is multiliteracies pedagogy. This research was conducted using the literature study discussing multiliteracies pedagogy to enhancing critical thinking skills in the twenty-first century. Literature review refers to a written synthesis of journal articles, books, and other documents that summarizes and critiques the past and current state of information about a topic, organizes the literature into sub-topics, and documents the background for a study. It can be concluded that the implementation of the multiliteracies pedagogy models is one of the alternative learning models that can improve critical thinking and problem-solving students in the university effectively in the areas of study taught compared to the most direct models used in English Language Teaching (ELT). Therefore, it is advisable to implement multiliteracies pedagogy in the practice of learning activities. Also, the application of multiliteracies pedagogy should be supported by the cooperation of all elements, both between teachers, management, and parents. This needs to be done to realize the effectiveness of quality learning, thus giving implications on the growth of potential students.

Abstract

Students’ reading interest still faces many challenges, even though literacy programs have been implemented in schools. In reality, reading is often treated as an academic task rather than a meaningful activity. Many students read only when they have tests or assignments, which shows that their motivation is mostly external. As a result, their inner motivation to read has not fully developed. This study aims to understand reading interest from students’ own perspectives, especially how they experience reading in their daily lives. It not only focuses on how often students read, but also how they feel and give meaning to literacy activities. This research uses a qualitative case study conducted in a sixth-grade class at SDN Klagen Sukodono, Sidoarjo. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and then analyzed with respect to the affective, behavioral, cognitive, and social aspects of reading engagement. The findings show that students are more engaged when reading is enjoyable and supported by good habits, helpful strategies, and a positive learning environment. However, their reading habits are still inconsistent and often depend on external support. Therefore, fostering students’ intrinsic motivation requires a more meaningful and supportive literacy environment.
