Abstract

Indonesian language instruction must encompass not only linguistic aspects but also literature. This is evident in curriculum policies that allocate specific portions of study time to literature in schools. Within the realm of literary education, poetry serves as a primary medium for character development; however, poetry material in schools is often covered only cursorily over a few sessions. This issue results in students lacking proficiency in poetry recitation, often reading mechanically without regard for expression or emotional depth. Students frequently recite poetry in a monotonous manner, losing the poem's meaning and rendering the verses as mere lifeless words devoid of inner feeling. The primary objective of this study is to transform abstract emotional concepts into measurable visualizations, ensuring that poetry recitation assessments move beyond subjective teacher evaluations such as the vague critique of "lacking soul" toward indicators that are measured objectively and precisely. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze the basic emotions conveyed during poetry recitations by Peri Sandi, treating them as visual symbols of the poem's meaning. The analysis identified 24 data points encompassing five universal basic emotions as defined by Ekman (2003) demonstrated by Peri Sandi during his recitations. The findings and discussion conclude that Peri Sandi’s recitation of the poem "Mata Luka Sengkon Karta" exhibits a profound and measurable representation of emotion; the subject successfully conveyed five of the six universal basic emotions identified by Paul Ekman.
