Abstract

ABSTRACT The research gap in critical discourse analysis studies of song lyrics in Indonesia indicates that there are still limited studies specifically examining satirical songs as a form of social criticism using Teun A. Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis model in an integrated manner, particularly those that connect textual structure, social cognition, and social context.. This study aims to analyze the social criticism contained in the song Negara Lucu using Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis approach. The method used is descriptive qualitative with textual analysis. The data consist of the lyrics of the song Negara Lucu, which are analyzed through three dimensions, namely textual structure, social cognition, and social context. The findings show that the song contains criticism of low literacy culture, unproductive behavior, social image culture, and economic issues in society. At the textual structure level, criticism is conveyed through theme, text organization, and the use of satire and metaphor. At the level of social cognition, the lyrics reflect the songwriter’s ideology regarding the importance of productivity and independence. Meanwhile, the social context shows that the song represents modern societal conditions influenced by cultural change and economic pressure. In conclusion, the song Negara Lucu functions as a medium of social criticism that reflects social reality and ideological perspectives within society.

Abstract

This study aims to identify forms of social criticism that depict injustice, as found in the lyrics of the song "Bongkar" by Iwan Fals. This song was chosen because it contains a profound social message regarding the dynamics of power, oppression, and social inequality that exist in society. This study applies a descriptive qualitative method with a critical discourse analysis approach. The data obtained were then analyzed using Norman Fairclough's theory, discussing the dimensions of text, social practice, and discursiveness. The analysis shows that the lyrics of "Bongkar" depict a critique of social injustice through symbols of resistance, illustrations of oppression by those in power, and a collective call for social change. The lyrics also reflect a view of resistance against the hegemony of power and demonstrate how music plays a role as a means of social criticism and awareness. Therefore, the song "Bongkar" can be seen as a cultural text that functions as a tool for conveying social criticism of structures of injustice within society.

Abstract

Language literacy plays an important role in improving elementary school students’ critical thinking skills. Good literacy skills help students understand, interpret, and evaluate information more deeply so that learning is not limited to memorization. This study aims to examine the role of language literacy in enhancing the critical thinking skills of elementary school students. The research method used is a literature review by analyzing various journal articles and scientific publications related to language literacy, digital literacy, and critical thinking skills. The findings indicate that language literacy, digital literacy, reading and writing habits, and appropriate learning strategies contribute significantly to the development of students’ critical thinking patterns. Literacy that is applied consistently and integrated into Indonesian language learning encourages students to think logically, reflectively, and analytically. This study is expected to provide a theoretical foundation for the development of literacy-based learning in elementary schools to improve students’ critical thinking skills in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and motivations of code-mixing used in the dialogue of the Indonesian feature film Ada Apa dengan Cinta? Film, as a mass media product, functions not only as entertainment but also as a representation of social language practices. In a multilingual society such as Indonesia, code-mixing is a common linguistic phenomenon that is reflected in contemporary film dialogues. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using observation and note-taking techniques. The data consist of characters’ utterances containing code-mixing, which are analyzed based on their forms and underlying motivations. The findings reveal that code-mixing appears in three main forms: insertion of words, phrases, and clauses, with word insertion being the most dominant form. The motivations behind the use of code-mixing include social identity, group solidarity, expressive and dramatic purposes, representation of urban youth realities, and the influence of globalization and popular culture. Code-mixing in the film functions not only as a reflection of everyday language practices but also as an artistic strategy to construct characters, depict social background, and enhance narrative atmosphere. Therefore, this study demonstrates that language in film plays a significant role in shaping meaning, characterization, and social representation within audiovisual works.

Abstract

This study examines social interaction between typically developing children and children with special needs (CWSN) in inclusive kindergarten settings, focusing on sociolinguistic aspects. The Research is urgent because understanding early communicative practices helps foster healthy social relationships; typical children's limited knowledge of how to interact with CWSN can lead to misunderstandings, exclusion, or barriers to learning. The study identifies and analyses language use, communication strategies, and social factors influencing these interactions. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed using participatory observation and in-depth interviews with teachers and parents. Data were analyzedanalyzed by examining linguistic and social patterns observed during natural interactions. Findings indicate that typical children predominantly employ three strategies: neutral responses, sympathetic responses, and spontaneous responses, which suggest a tendency toward social acceptance of CWSN and positive contributions to inclusion. However, teacher and parent facilitation remains essential to develop more reciprocal and interactive communication. The study recommends teacher training and parental involvement to strengthen inclusive communicative practices to support inclusive learning and development.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The phenomenon of code-mixing in Indonesian films has grown alongside the increasing representation of bilingual communities and digital culture. However, previous studies have primarily focused on identifying the forms of code-mixing, while limited attention has been given to its role in constructing film characters. This study enriches sociolinguistic research by examining code-mixing as a strategy for character development. It aims to identify the types of code-mixing used by the character Marlina in the film Agak Laen, directed by Muhadkly Acho, and to explain their contribution to character construction. A descriptive qualitative method was employed using Marlina’s utterances as the primary data source, collected through observation, dialogue transcription, and note-taking. Data were analyzed based on Suandi’s classification of inner and outer code-mixing. The findings reveal 11 instances of code-mixing, consisting of three cases of inner code-mixing and eight cases of outer code-mixing. The predominance of outer code-mixing portrays Marlina as a young character who adapts to digital culture while maintaining her local identity. These findings demonstrate that code-mixing functions as an effective narrative device for character construction in contemporary Indonesian cinema.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the language metafunctions found in the narrative and dialogue of the novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori using Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics approach. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method to describe how language functions in constructing meaning within literary discourse. Data were collected through the listening and note-taking techniques applied to a transcript of 40 selected sentences representing three different narrative contexts in the novel. The data were analyzed based on Halliday’s three metafunctions of language, namely ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions. The findings reveal that the ideational metafunction is dominated by mental and relational processes, indicating the characters’ thoughts, emotions, experiences, and relationships with their social environment. The interpersonal metafunction is primarily realized through declarative clauses used to provide information, express viewpoints, and establish interactions between characters. Meanwhile, the textual metafunction demonstrates the organization of themes and rhemes that create coherence and facilitate the flow of information throughout the narrative. The novelty of this study lies in its application of Halliday’s metafunction analysis to Laut Bercerita, offering a deeper understanding of meaning construction and linguistic representation in contemporary Indonesian literary works.
