Abstract

The characters in Japanese animation (or anime) are the center of this study, which examines the ways in which they demonstrate regret. Many prior studies have used anime as research study material because it is one of the media that is extremely interesting to analyze from a variety of perspectives. For this analysis, researchers used information from 14 episodes of the 24-minute-long anime series Golden Time. The animation depicts the daily lives of Japanese college students, and the numerous struggles they endure are depicted through several expressions of regret. The data gathered is derived from transcripts of talks carried out by the anime characters and is utilized as research material. The collected data was 54 regret speech act utterances and then examined using a qualitative descriptive approach. The data were then classified into the varieties of regret indicated by Pink. After being analyzed, it was shown that noni form dominates the regret speech acts performed in anime, and the types of regret speech acts that are commonly employed are those related to regret of an action or opportunity that should have been taken by someone. It is also known in this study that Japanese people tend to express regret by providing information about facts that differ from what they expected, causing them to feel regret. When they express regret, they may also blame themselves for their actions.

Abstract

One of the difficulties students experience in learning Japanese grammar is limited study time. Practical learning without limitations of space, time, and place through an e-learning system allows students to learn independently, efficiently, and effectively which also can be applied as a solution to improve students' mastery of Japanese grammar. This research applies the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model in developing e-learning application designs on smartphones. The data in this study were collected using pre-experimental methods and by distributing Likert scale questionnaires to fifteen students. The application developed is named “Manabu Bunpou”, validated by the IT team, and consists of JLPT level N4 grammar practice tests, several levels, and quizzes. The material including ninety-three Japanese sentence patterns developed from several sources and also contains conversation videos accompanied by texts. From the questionnaires distributed to Japanese language learners, the “Manabu Bunpou” application is considered highly accessible, helps improve understanding of basic Japanese grammar, and supports independent learning. However, according to the participants, the materials in the application are still limited and hence need further development.

Abstract

This study analyzed the misuse of Japanese -sa and -mi suffixes among intermediate learners. The purpose of this research is to describe the suffix usage errors along with their classification and causative factors. The method used in this research is quantitative descriptive method. Based on the analysis, overall errors rate is 46% with -sa suffix usage errors amounting to 29,76% and -mi suffix error usage amounting to 58,33%. The language deviation found classified as errors and mistake, linguistically, the errors classified as morphological and lexical errors, and based on surface strategy the errors classified as misformation. Most of the errors found are intralingual errors caused by overgeneralization, avoidance, ignorance of rule restriction, false concepts hypothesized, and learning strategy. Improving the understanding of both learners and teachers is important to prevent continuous errors. Further research on sakubun making is expected to explore new findings.

Abstract

Although previous research has demonstrated the significance of blended learning in foreign language learning, little attention is devoted to examining the influence of blended learning on students’ basic Korean learning process. This research aims to investigate the students’ perceptions of blended learning model in learning basic Korean. A quantitative and qualitative research method was employed by collecting data from questionnaires and interviews. This research involved 20 students in a Donasi Sambil Belajar (DOSILA) program. The DOSILA program was included as a learning program that used a blended learning model with a composition of 30% of e-learning and 70% of face-to-face learning. In addition, students’ perceptions of the blended learning model were examined. The results revealed that the application of blended learning as a new learning model could improve students’ learning independence properly. The students also informed that blended learning model assisted them to learn basic Korean easily with satisfaction. However, they encountered some obstacles such as forgotten schedules and poor internet connection. The results of this research can be a reference for future research to formulate more rigorous teaching framework.

Abstract

While acquiring a second language, learners may encounter challenges and difficulties in effectively carrying out verbal communication in the second language. Mastering the apology speech act is a challenge for L2 learners. The objective of this study is to identify the apology strategies utilized by individuals learning the Japanese language, as well as the specific types and underlying causes of errors produced during the execution of apologetic speech acts. The results of this study were gathered via the Discourse Completion Test (DCT), which encompassed a sample of 150 Japanese language learners. The gathered data were further classified using eight semantic formulas based on the research conducted by Haristiani and Sopiyanti (2019), while the various types and sources of error categorization were conducted based on the theories proposed by Corder (1981) and Richards (1975). The results of this study suggest that Japanese learners utilize the same primary strategies in apology speech acts. Furthermore, the study findings indicated that learners at the intermediate level displayed a higher frequency of errors in their speech compared to learners at the beginner levels and pre-intermediate levels, particularly in the strategy of taking responsibility. The main reason for this was primarily a lack of familiarity with the conventions of sentence structures, the proper use of language, and the appropriate use of expressions. The other sources of errors in language learning are likely to be ignoring language rule restrictions, incomplete application of rules, the learner’s false hypothesis, overgeneralization, and language transfer. This study is anticipated to function as a point of reference for research in interlanguage pragmatics, second-language acquisition, and error analysis. Gaining comprehension of the various problems and difficulties encountered when performing the speech act of apology in Japanese can assist both learners and educators in reducing these errors.
