Abstract

This article researches the complicated class structure of George Orwell's dystopian masterpiece, which is the novel titled "1984." By examining the clear and stark divisions within Oceania's society, this analysis aims to uncover the underlying social commentary that is on the text. The article will be focusing on two different classes, the classes are Bourgeois and Proletarian. Through a close examination of these classes' roles, privileges, and oppression, this study will reveal how Orwell makes use of class stratification to give a critique about the dangers of totalitarianism and the annihilation of individual freedom. This research will also focus more on showing the correlation and difference between the Bourgeois and Proletarian class, and how unfair the treatment the lower class will get meanwhile the higher class having a decent life. Ultimately, this exploration shows the lasting relevance of "1984" as a warning tale about the consequences of unchecked power and the timeless struggle for social justice.

Abstract

This paper explores the enduring theme of Paranoia in Thomas Pynchon’s novel “The Crying of Lot 49,” with a particular emphasis on the protagonist, Oedipa Maas. In the story, Paranoia arises as a reaction to the intricate and uncertain nature of the modern world portrayed by Pynchon. Through symbols such as the muted post horn and Tristero’s conspiratorial network, Oedipa is caught up in a never-ending search for meaning. As Oedipa delves deeper into her investigation, she experiences a mental crisis characterized by paranoia and disorientation. The more Oedipa gathers information about Tristero, the higher her paranoid levels become. She feels that everything she sees, smells, dreams and remembers will be interwoven into Tristero. This creates a tension between what is real and what is imagined. She wonders if all these clues really exist or are just imaginary. This creates a strong internal debate, making it difficult for her to believe in anything. With this discussion of paranoia in the novel, we as readers can explore how paranoia not only affects Oedipa’s perception of the world around her, but also illustrates Pynchon’s critique of social and political structures that oppress individuals.

Abstract

Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn serves as a profound critique of the class and racial inequalities entrenched in 19th-century American society. Through the characters of Huck Finn, a poor white boy, and Jim, an escaped slave, Twain illuminates the struggles faced by those at the bottom of the social hierarchy. Jim's journey for freedom symbolizes the broader fight against systemic injustice that characterized his time. As a black man in a society that dehumanizes him, Jim embodies the plight of individuals denied their basic rights and dignity. His aspirations for family, financial stability, and freedom from discrimination reflect a natural right to liberty that society systematically denies him. Huck's moral development is central to the narrative, as he grapples with societal norms that dictate racial superiority and class distinctions. Initially conditioned by the prejudices of his environment, Huck experiences a transformation as he befriends Jim. This relationship challenges his ingrained beliefs and compels him to confront the hypocrisy of a society that claims to be civilized while perpetuating slavery and inequality [5][7]. Huck's internal conflict highlights the tension between societal expectations and personal conscience, ultimately leading him to reject social hierarchies in favor of empathy and human connection. Twain's portrayal of these characters not only critiques institutional racism but also underscores the necessity of personal integrity in the quest for equality. The novel advocates for a moral awakening that transcends class and race, suggesting that true freedom and dignity can only be achieved through compassion and the rejection of oppressive societal constructs [6][8]. In this way, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remains a powerful commentary on the enduring issues of inequality and class struggle.

Abstract

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a piece of Gothic literature which has lasted in popularity until the modern age. There are numerous interesting aspects to analyze from this book. One such aspect is the use of paradoxes in this novel and its execution in the story. This paper aims to analyze four types of paradoxes present in Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein: Situational Paradox, Verbal Paradox, Character Paradox, and Thematic Paradox. The Situational Paradox highlights the contradictions between the intentions of Victor Frankenstein and the disastrous outcomes of his experiments. The Verbal Paradox examines instances of language that convey conflicting meanings, reflecting the complexity of the characters' experiences. The Character Paradox explores the duality within the characters, particularly in Victor and his creation, as they navigate their desires and identities. Finally, the Thematic Paradox addresses the broader moral and ethical dilemmas presented in the novel, showcasing the conflicts between ambition, responsibility, and the nature of humanity. This study will approach these issues from a mainly posmodern point of view which explores the complexity of these paradoxes. The results of this analysis revealed new insights into how these paradoxes not only serve as narrative elements but also reflect the ethical and philosophical dilemmas of the era. It can be concluded that Shelley employs paradoxes in various forms situational, character, verbal, and thematic-to highlight the complexities of her narrative and deepen the understanding of her characters and themes.

Abstract

Abstract. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how exoticism in fantasy literature is shaped by cultural backgrounds and the use of magical elements. . A comparative qualitative approach is used due to the use of narrative analysis in this study and is necessary to determine the similarities of the study objects. This study analyzes elements such as objects, characters, dialogues or narratives, and rituals or customs collected from both novels as primary data sources. The finding shows the distinct cultural background to build the exoticism. Harry Potter draws extensively from Western and Europe traditions, folklore, myths, and Greek mythology, applying these to create its magical world. In contrast, Archipelagos adopts Asian culture, particularly Indonesian traditions, to enhance the exoticism of its story. The magical elements in this novel are deeply connected to human relationships with nature and animistic beliefs that are central to Indonesian culture. Voldemort and Berong are cultural villain conceptions that have a strong basis in their respective mythologies. The different cultural influences in each novel appear in these differences.   The research demonstrates that the cultural context is important in the development of exoticism in fantasy literature Keywords: exoticism, comparative analysis, fantasy, harry potter, magical element, novel

Abstract

This study examines how Islamic organizations in West Java use the Qur'an and Hadith as foundations for legal rulings (fatwas) in response to modern challenges. Focusing on Muhammadiyah, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and Persatuan Islam (Persis), the research highlights how ijtihad (Islamic legal reasoning) adapts to social and technological changes. Comparative analysis reveals distinct methodological approaches: Muhammadiyah employs rational-textual methods (bayani, qiyasi, istishlahi), NU combines traditionalism with contextual flexibility, while Persis strictly follows scriptural sources. These differences produce varying fatwas - for example, Muhammadiyah declares smoking haram (forbidden) due to health risks, whereas NU and Persis consider it makruh (discouraged) due to weaker scriptural evidence. These variations stem from differing interpretations of texts, social considerations, and methodological priorities. The findings demonstrate Islamic law's ability to address contemporary issues while maintaining core principles. The study suggests that fatwa differences reflect each organization's intellectual tradition and social context rather than fundamental disagreements about Islamic law. Future research could explore: (1) regional variations in fatwa formulation across Indonesia, (2) interdisciplinary studies combining Islamic jurisprudence with social sciences, and (3) the impact of digital technology on ijtihad processes. Such studies would deepen understanding of how Islamic legal traditions interact with modernity in diverse Muslim communities.
