Abstract

The disposal of wastewater containing high levels of organic parameters can trigger bacterial growth, which can lead to a decrease in dissolved oxygen in the water. This research uses MBBR technology to degrade organic parameters. The aim of this research is to compare the optimum media types for the degradation of organic pollutants and to analyse the MLSS and SVI values to determine the quality of the sludge produced. The variation used in this study is the type of media used is sponge media and K5 hardness with the treatment of both types of media using residence time for 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours and 10 hours. In the study, the seeding and acclimation process was carried out first until it met the specified design criteria. The results indicated that the best media for COD and total nitrogen removal were the sponge media with a removal percentage of 56% and 48% at a retention time of 10 hours. In the analysis of MLSS and SVI, the highest MLSS value was obtained in Kaldness K5 and there was an increase in SVI at each retention time for both. From this study it can be concluded that Kaldness K5 is more dominant in a suspended growth system than a sponge, but the greatest removal of organic pollutants is in sponge media which is more dominant in attached growth.

Abstract

Waste problems in Nganjuk Regency are becoming more complex due to population and economic growth, resulting in an increase in the volume of waste entering the Kedungdowo TPA Active Zone. An integrated waste management system is needed. We must apply and maximize the role of TPST and TPS3R. The objective of this study was to ascertain the amount of residual waste entering the Kedungdowo TPA Active Zone after waste management at TPST Kartoharjo and TPS3R Payaman. Additionally, the study sought to determine if there is a reduction in residue entering the Kedungdowo TPA Active Zone when management is carried out and when it is not. We conducted this research through field observations and interviews with the person in charge of TPST Kartoharjo, TPS3R Payaman, and Kedungdowo landfill. This approach allowed us to obtain concrete information and data for each place. The results are clear: residual waste entering the Kedungdowo Landfill Active Zone in January and February from TPST Kartoharjo amounted to 90,329.4 kg, and 24,359.888 kg from TPS3R Payaman. The reduction of residual waste entering the Kedungdowo TPA Active Zone by TPST Kartoharjo and TPS3R Payaman is projected to reach 57,909.488 kg in January and 56,779.8 kg in February. The Kedungdowo TPA Active Zone will reduce the residue entering the facility by 1,541,378 kg and 1,346,924 kg after management, compared to 1,612,144 kg and 1,406,904 kg without management.

Abstract

The increasing population and rapid development in the Panarukan subdistrict of Situbondo regency have significantly impacted waste generation patterns, posing considerable challenges to waste management. This study proposes the construction of a 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Waste Processing Station (TPS) as an alternative to the conventional collect-transport-dispose approach currently used in the area. The study uses primary data on waste generation and composition, measured and analysed according to the SNI 19-3964-1994 standard, as well as secondary population data from 2013 to 2023. A population projection was conducted using the geometric method with the lowest standard deviation (1.147) to predict future waste generation until 2033. The results showed that the sub-district produces 23,043 kg of waste per day, dominated by food waste (41.2%), plastic waste (23.9%) and paper/cardboard (17.3%). Projected waste production in 2033 is estimated to reach 25,046 kg/day (160.55 m³/day). The planned TPS 3R facility requires a total land area of 844.81 m² and has a processing capacity of 160.55 m³/day. Implementing TPS 3R is expected to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills and support the national waste management target of reducing waste by 30% and handling 70% of it by 2025.
