Abstract

Tunda Island is one of a group of islands located in the northern area of Banten Province. In the eastern and southern parts of Tunda Island, there is a mangrove ecosystem which is a habitat for various organisms, one of which is gastropods. In the mangrove ecosystem, some gastropods live on the roots, stems, and leaves of mangroves by sticking and climbing, clinging to dead wood, to the muddy ground. It is necessary to know the type composition and distribution of gastropods in the mangrove ecosystem found on Tunda Island, Serang Regency, Banten. Gastropod sampling was carried out on a 5 x 5 m2 plot at the lowest tide. All types of gastropods found in the plots were taken by hand. The gastropod samples obtained were then cleaned and put in a sample bottle, then given a 70% alcohol solution as initial preservation for further identification at the Laboratory of Dry Hydrobiology, Marine Science and Technology, FPIK, Bogor Agricultural University. There are 19 types of gastropods found in the mangrove ecosystem of Tunda Island from 11 families, including: Cerithidea cingulata, Telescopium telescopium, Terebralia sulcata, Terebralia palustris, Cerithium kobelti, Chicoreus capucinus, Coralliophila persica, Littoraria scabra, Mitrella puella, Xenorita plana. indica, Clea helena, Morula biconica, Phos senticosus, Fissilabia decollate, Monodonta canalifera, Imbricaria vanicorensis. Based on the index value of the diversity index (H') (0.06 – 0.21 < H'< 2.0), dominance (D) (0.03 – 0.19 < D<0.50) and uniformity (E) (0.03–0.13) obtained, the gastropods found in the mangrove area on Tunda Island with a low level of diversity.

Abstract

The area of mangrove ecosystems in West Nusa Tenggara Province continues to decline each year. One of the threatening factors that substantially contribute to such condition is socioeconomic activities of human beings in fulfilling their needs. An effort that can be made primarily to preserve the mangrove ecosystem is to quantify the economic value of environmental services provided by the mangrove ecosystem as a whole, so that the existence and sustainability of the mangrove ecosystem could be maintained. This research aims to calculate the total economic value of mangrove ecosystem services which indicate the four categories of ecosystem services including supporting services, provisioning services, regulatory services and cultural services. The research was carried out using a survey method by collecting data and information from location of this study to obtain actual data regarding the existence of the mangrove ecosystem. The results of the analysis show that the total economic value of mangrove ecosystem environmental services is 963,888,060/year. This value is divided into provider services (supply services) amounting to Rp. 153,002,250, regulatory services (arrangement services) Rp. 598,339,702, supporting services (support services) Rp. 2,243,250, and cultural services (cultural services) Rp. 210,308,857. The magnitude of the total economic value of mangrove ecosystem environmental services can be a reference for the government in determining compensation for services if there is degradation to mangrove ecosystem resources in the area.

Abstract

Indonesia possesses approximately 51,000 km² of coral reef ecosystems, yet their condition continues to decline due to both human activities and natural factors. One affected area is the Gili Matra Marine Tourism Park (TWP), particularly the Gili Air dive sites, where significant coral reef degradation has been observed. This study aims to determine the percentage of coral lifeforms and assess the accuracy of Sentinel-2A satellite imagery in mapping coral reefs in the area. Field data were collected using the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method and analyzed with CPCe software. Sentinel-2A imagery was processed through sunglint correction water column correction and unsupervised classification using ENVI 5.3 and ArcGIS 10.8. The results show coral reef conditions in Gili Air range from moderate to poor, with the highest live coral cover at Air Slove and the lowest at Hans Reef. A total of eleven coral lifeform types were identified. Image classification produced four benthic habitat classes with an overall accuracy of 60.5% and a Kappa index of 18.3%, meeting the minimum standard set by the Indonesian National Standard The study demonstrates that integrating UPT data and Sentinel-2A imagery is effective for mapping coral reefs, although higher-resolution imagery is recommended for better substrate differentiation.

Abstract

Mangroves play a crucial role in maintaining environmental balance, including wave attenuation, preventing erosion, providing habitat for various species, and storing carbon to mitigate climate change. However, mangrove ecosystems are currently facing serious degradation threats due to human activities and climate change, necessitating protective measures, rehabilitation, and active community participation to ensure their preservation. This community service initiative aims to conserve mangrove ecosystems through nursery activities (nursery) and mangrove planting (out-planting) in potential areas not yet populated by mangroves in Siung Village, Sekotong, West Lombok. The nursery activities include techniques for collecting seedlings from the wild, selecting and sorting healthy seedlings, placing them in planting media, and caring for the seedlings. Meanwhile, the out-planting activities involve planting the seedlings in the wild and monitoring the planted mangroves to ensure their survival. Over approximately two months, this project has produced 3,200 mangrove seedlings of Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora stylosa, and Ceriops tagal species, with a survival rate of 87.5%. As for the out-planting activities, 2,700 mangrove seedlings have been successfully planted in areas near the nursery site. Challenges encountered during seedling collection and care include tidal fluctuations, the presence of pests and predators. In the out-planting activities, ongoing monitoring and maintenance are required to maintain a high survival rate for the seedlings planted in the wild.

Abstract

The fish processing and marketing group (poklahsar) in the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area has received intervention from the central government through Bappenas in the COREMAP-CTI III program. This intervention involves improving human resource capacity and providing grants for fish processing equipment. However, the limited duration of the program has resulted in suboptimal assistance in utilizing the donated fish processing equipment. Therefore, the involvement of universities in assisting the community is deemed necessary. This assistance activity aims to inform and educate the poklahsar about the use of fish processing equipment, particularly machines, to enhance production capacity in the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area. The assistance activities were carried out in July 2023 at the respective production locations of each poklahsar. The educational method for adults in this assistance activity involves lectures and hands-on practical training. The outcome of this assistance activity is an increased understanding and knowledge among poklahsar in the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area regarding the functions and uses of various machine-based fish processing equipment. Additionally, it was identified that some obstacles hinder optimizing machine-based equipment utilization, including a lack of understanding in using such equipment and limited market demand for processed fish products. In conclusion, the poklahsar have diverse views on using machine-based equipment, enabling them to optimize the use of such equipment despite the limited demand for processed fish products.

Abstract

This study investigates microplastic contamination in whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) cultivation systems, focusing on water, feed, and shrimp health. Microplastics, which pose significant threats to aquaculture, are often ingested by shrimp, potentially causing physiological damage and reducing product quality. The research was conducted from June to September 2024 at PT—X in North Lombok Regency. Samples of water, shrimp organs (intestines, stomach, and gills), and feed (pellets and crumbles) were analyzed for microplastic contamination. Results revealed a high presence of microplastic fragments in both shrimp and feed, with a significant reduction in microplastic particles after water filtration treatment. Specifically, the water reservoir contained 71 microplastic particles before treatment, with fragments being the most prevalent, and decreased to 8 particles post-treatment. The pelleted feed showed 102 microplastic particles, with fragments comprising 90 of them. Similarly, crumble feed contained 49 microplastic particles, predominantly fragments. The findings emphasize the significant role of microplastic pollution from the surrounding environment and the feed production process in shrimp farming. This study provides essential insights into the sources and impact of microplastics on shrimp health and the quality of aquaculture products, advocating for improved management practices and environmental awareness to mitigate contamination risks.
