Abstract

Background: Elderly individuals in nursing homes often experience psychological challenges such as loneliness, decreased resilience, and mental health issues. Understanding the prevalence and determinants of these issues is essential for designing targeted interventions. This study aims to examine the prevalence of loneliness, resilience, and mental health issues among elderly patients at Long Term Care, and to identify the key factors influencing these variables. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed involving 126 elderly residents aged 60-90 years. Data were collected using validated instruments, including the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Resilience Scale, and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). Demographic and clinical data, such as age, gender, education level, length of stay, marital status, income, and history of chronic diseases, were also recorded. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics for prevalence and logistic regression to identify significant predictors of loneliness, resilience, and mental health. Results: The prevalence of loneliness was 58%, with a higher incidence among females and those aged over 70 years. Resilience was significantly lower in participants with chronic diseases and lower socioeconomic status. Mental health issues were identified in 45% of participants, with lower education levels, longer stays in the nursing home, and chronic illness as significant contributing factors. Logistic regression revealed that chronic disease history (OR = 3.32, p < 0.05) and length of stay >5 years (OR = 1.91, p < 0.05) were the strongest predictors of poor mental health outcomes. Conclusion: The study highlights the high prevalence of loneliness, reduced resilience, and mental health issues among elderly residents at Long Term Care. Chronic disease and prolonged institutionalization emerged as critical factors influencing psychological well-being. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions, such as structured psychosocial therapies, to address these challenges and improve the quality of life of elderly patients.

Abstract

Background: The increasing number of elderly causes various health problems, one of which is hypertension. If hypertension is not well controlled it can cause psychological and physiological problems. The combination of Benson relaxation therapy and lavender aromatherapy is a non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to manage anxiety, sleep quality, and blood pressure. This study aims to determine the effects of lavender aromatherapy, Benson relaxation therapy, and their combination on anxiety levels, sleep quality, and blood pressure in elderly individuals with hypertension. Methods: The research design is quantitative with a quasi-experimental approach without a control group. The sampling selection in this study used purposive sampling. The sample consists of elderly individuals at Sentra Bekasi, totaling 90 respondents, divided into 30 respondents for each intervention. After interventions were carried out and data collected, data analysis was conducted using the MANOVA test. Results: p-value 0.000 indicating a significant effect of intervention type on sleep quality, anxiety, and blood pressure. The next test is the test of between-subjects effects, which shows a significant effect only on the variables of anxiety and blood pressure. The final test used is the Post Hoc Test (multiple comparisons), which indicates that the variables with significant values and a real difference in relation to the intervention are anxiety and blood pressure. Meanwhile, the variable of sleep quality does not show any real difference across each intervention. Conclusion: Overall, Lavender Aromatherapy is superior in reducing anxiety and blood pressure compared to the other two therapies.

Abstract

Abstract

Background:  Depression is a common mood disorder among the elderly, particularly those living in social care institutions. Factors such as social isolation, loss of family support, and chronic health conditions contribute to increased vulnerability. Understanding the level and characteristics of depression in this population is essential for developing targeted interventions. Purpose:This study aimed to describe the level of depression and its demographic characteristics among elderly residents at Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia 1 Social Care Institution. Methods:  A quantitative descriptive design was used with 162 elderly residents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15) and a demographic questionnaire. Univariate analysis was performed using SPSS version 22.   Results:   The majority of respondents were female (59.3%), aged 60–74 years (66.7%), widowed (66.0%), and had a high school education (65.4%). Mild depression was the most prevalent (43.8%), followed by moderate depression (35.2%). A small proportion experienced severe depression (7.4%). Hypertension was the most common health complaint (45.7%).   Conclusion: Mild depression is prevalent among institutionalized elderly. Factors such as gender, marital status, length of stay, and health conditions may influence depression levels. These findings highlight the need for mental health screening and psychosocial support programs in elderly care institutions.

Abstract

Sarcopenia is common in older adults and contributes to functional decline, disability, and increased healthcare utilization. In community-dwelling older adults, increased risk of sarcopenia may limit daily activities and negatively affect health-related quality of life, yet evidence from community settings in Indonesia remains limited. This study examined the association between risk of sarcopenia and health-related quality of life among community-dwelling older adults. Cross-sectional study conducted in the working area of Wanasari Public Health Center, Bekasi Regency, Indonesia, February–March 2025. Community-dwelling adults aged ≥60 years (n=305) were recruited by consecutive sampling. Risk of sarcopenia was measured using the SARC-CalF (SARC-F plus calf circumference) questionnaire; health-related quality of life was measured with the EQ-5D-5L (EuroQol-5 Dimension, 5-level). Validity and reliability testing of instruments in the study sample are reported in Methods. The association between sarcopenia risk (continuous SARC-CalF score) and EQ-5D index score was assessed with Spearman’s rank correlation. The result showed that Mean age 64.65±5.20 years; 61.3% female. A total of 137/305 (44.9%) were classified as at risk of sarcopenia (SARC-CalF), and 168/305 (55.1%) as low risk. Median (range) SARC-CalF = 4 (0–20). Median EQ-5D index = 0.83 (0.41–1.00). There was a strong, negative correlation between SARC-CalF score and EQ-5D index (Spearman’s rho = –0.711, p<0.001), indicating higher sarcopenia risk relates to lower quality of life. In this community sample, higher risk of sarcopenia is strongly associated with poorer health-related quality of life. We recommend routine screening for sarcopenia risk in primary care and further analytic studies to identify independent predictors in this population

Abstract

Background: Loneliness among the elderly is a critical public health concern associated with adverse mental and physical health outcomes. In Indonesia, rapid urbanization and shifting family structures may exacerbate this issue, yet data on its prevalence at the primary healthcare level remain limited. Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of loneliness and identify key demographic correlates among community-dwelling elderly in the working area. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March to June 2024. Using consecutive sampling, 109 elderly participants aged ≥60 years were enrolled. Data were collected using the validated Indonesian version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3) and a structured demographic questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and frequency distributions were used for data analysis. Results: The study revealed that 74.3% of participants experienced mild loneliness, while 16.5% reported no loneliness, 8.3% had moderate loneliness, and 0.9% experienced severe loneliness. Significant demographic correlates included female gender (72.5%), age 60-69 years (78.9%), elementary education level (47.7%), unemployment status (69.7%), widowhood (51.4%), and low income (<IDR 1,500,000; 87.2%).Conclusion: Mild loneliness is prevalent among the elderly in this community, with distinct demographic correlates. These findings emphasize the need for targeted, community-based psychosocial interventions integrated into primary healthcare services to address loneliness among vulnerable elderly populations.
